Blasphemy & Genocide: Unpopular Green Day Opinions, Part 2

It's especially good given that it's at the point where Jason looks like he's whacking off his guitar. It's like Redundant all over again.

Like in a Jonny Greenwood way?

Are you listening to the right song?

I think so.

I think my ears are just broken. I can't hear the tambourine in Lazy Bones that people always talk about.

Don't feel bad, I can't even recall the chorus to BOBD, and I've been trying to all day :P. I'm gonna have to google the lyrics

ok get out

My shadow's the only one that walks besides me

My heart's the only thing that ??? Beating

Sometimes I wish someone would ??? Save me

Till then I walk alone

Seriously, if I was listening to the song, I'd have it, but I just can't recall it right now

That's pretty funny, since you know everything there is to know about Green Day.

Why don't you just listen to one of the thousand versions you have on your computer? :P

When I said maybe I meant either or I didn't really mean to imply that they're not important to GD's legacy. But the songs that get remembered are usually going to be the ballads that's just how it is. If you're going to make a list of "best rock songs of all time"…then songs like JOS and Good Riddance are gonna be your best bets from GD, in my opinion. Those songs will stand the test of time better than Basket Case or WICA

Basket Case and WICA are a HUGE part of Green Day's legacy. To a lot of fans they ARE the only legacy. Both those songs (mostly Basket Case) are considered some of the top rock songs of all time and both still get TONS of radio play.

Because I was doing stuff, I can't just stop everything in the middle of the day and start playing music on my phone. And I sure as hell don't carry my laptop everywhere with me

Shocked that no one has mentioned "Longview" as a major part of Green Day's legacy. Literally everyone who I've ever spoken to who isn't terribly familiar with Green Day either says, "Oh, those American Idiot guys?" or, "Oh, they're the ones who made that masturbation song!"

I have! I think it epitomizes the band, their number one song for me.

Ahhh sorry, Hermione! That's what I get for skimming :P

I don't even like Longview that much, but it's so iconic that I never fail to get pumped when they play it at concerts.

Tom dislikes it and will suspend us for discussing it. :P Seriously, though, yes plz more Longview.

UO: neither She's a Rebel or Extraordinary Girl is my least favorite song on AI.

So, out of curiosity, what IS your least favorite song on AI?!

I actually changed it right as you posted; was just trying to irk you. :P#cultofmod

If it comes down to the one I listen to the least, it's Give Me Novacaine. Not that I dislike it by any means. Honestly, going by play count I like She's a Rebel more than the title track.

Too bad I quoted you before you changed it, I'm all about exposing the cult :P

Ahh yeah, I feel you there, Give Me Novacaine is still my least-played track off that album aside from Extraordinary Girl. I actively disliked it, actually, until I saw the musical. Something about the way they choreographed and arranged that song really brought it home to me and made me a bit more attached to it than I used to be.

Because that went so well for you last time. :P

I think Extraordinary Girl gets way more of a bad rap than it deserves; it's a pretty unique song for them up to that point musically (the Oriental-flavored guitar), and the lyrics are rather great. Novacaine is objectively the better song, though. Although I still don't understand what Tom's talking about when he says it's Tre's best drum performance.

(literally no idea what you're talking about, I'm so confused, what part of GDC lore am I forgetting?)

I'd like to have some of whatever Tom's smoking if it's what makes him think that GMN is Tre's best drum performance  And, I get that Extraordinary Girl was a pretty radical departure for Green Day at the time, and I'd probably like the song more if it were on another album, but it just makes no sense to me in the context of American Idiot, both musically AND lyrically.

(your Bible study)

Really? Lyrically it's completely necessary, IMO; you need to show Jesus and Whatsername's relationship disintegrating before the final explosion that is Letterbomb. Honestly, even adding another song there would've been good; as is, they've met, dated and broken up in three songs, which is rather abrupt.

GMN was the first point in the musical where I just thought "wow!" (No doge pun intended.) It's very well done.

(HA YES I mean, I did expose it in the end :P )

See, I don't think it is necessary at all. Whatsername is set up as this incredibly energetic, volatile, independent character in "She's a Rebel," right? And "Jesus" clearly likes her, but why does he have to date her? The album would stand fine without him dating her, in my opinion, might even be better. So, in "She's a Rebel" you've got Jesus enamored of her, and then if we skip "Extraordinary Girl" and go right into "Letterbomb" you've got her just up and leaving, and maybe that last bit - "You're not the Jesus of Suburbia, the St. Jimmy is a figment of your father's rage and your mother's love, etc." is just her kind of crushing his puppy love for her. Maybe she leaves because she feels smothered by his affection for her. What if they didn't have some sort of epic love story, etc., what if we just had Jesus crushing on her hard and her rejecting him outright? Because the album as a whole is so sketchy on the parameters of their relationship, I think the idea of a Jesus and Whatsername who didn't have some sort of big relationship is perfectly plausible.

Oh, I agree that objectively, GMN is a great song, but I just don't play it much. Could come down to simply relating to it differently than you do due to our different life experiences/perspective.
