WhiteTim
it has to do, when the sound quality is good , you just enjoy everything. from chorus, to the bridge, from the verse to, the SOLO, and when that's not great, you just suppose everything going like a car with a uniform velocity. Listen to say the rehearsal demo to Nirvana's Smells Like Teen Spirit very very crappy recording but you could tell it was going to be a bad ass song Sound quality don't reflect on the actual quality of the song State Of Shock isn't a bad song I'm not saying that but it's not that great of the song I think most people like it cause it sounds better than some of the songs on the trilogy in the great outlook of things State Of Shock I doubt would be in top 50 GD songs For the record I love crappy sounding recordings escp if they are unmixed or not mastered

captain peroxide
State Of Shock isn't a bad song Yes, it is. I challenge any of the bafflingly large number of people in this thread who seem to like the song to tell me what's objectively good about it. None of the ideas in the lyrics are anything that Billie hasn't covered before, after, and more eloquently, and none of the music is anything that they haven't done before, after, and more interestingly. The only part of the song that is at all interesting is the "we want to go to heaven, but no one wants to die" bit, but that isn't enough to save what is otherwise a completely uninspired, half-assed attempt at a song. Hate on Nightlife, or Troublemaker, or Drama Queen all you want, at least those songs all try something new, even if they don't necessarily make it work. State of Shock seems like someone said to Billie, "write the most by-the-numbers, bland Green Day song you possibly can."

captain peroxide
Well, I was talking about the melody / arrangement, not the lyrics. But thanks for pointing that out, I didn't know that line was lifted from someone else. It's not the worst song they ever done nor is it the greatest it's just a good song for what it is And what it is is shit. Spike
In short, the only good thing about State Of Shock is the line Billie didn't even write.

State of Shock seems like someone said to Billie, "write the most by-the-numbers, bland Green Day song you possibly can." So, you basically admit that troublemaker and nightlife are worse songs than state of shock but yet you like them better? State of shock is as good a b-side as maria, poprocks and coke, and hearts collide. I don't really think it tries to be more than that. In fact that was kinda the point of the song. Turns back the clock a bit. I enjoy songs like that more than almost everything from the trilogy or 21 CB.
DookieLukie
"Dookie Lukie has lame opinions". Is that an unpopular opinion? I defend the Trilogy constantly and everyone hates on me. Mar
Ok.....here it goes..... I found myself singing along with Troublemaker when it came up on shuffle..... I enjoyed it too. Oh the shame. I'll admit that this has happened to me at some point. I h8 myself. I guess that shows that it's not 100 percent shit, only mostly shit.

AlissaGoesRAWR
PREACH! Seriously though, how can anyone not like Stay the Night? Trilogy aside, it's a wonderful song. And when put alongside a lot of shit songs on the trilogy, it then appears even that much better. You can actually tell that there's some soul and heart in it. To me, the song doesn't seem like some desperate hook up song ("stay the night with me, pretty girl") or anything like what most songs about this topic imply. The "we're only young tonight, there's no time left, come home with me tonight" theme is so popular in music today, and I feel like Stay the Night does it so much more poetically than any of the others, and with deeper meaning. It makes me think of two people who must separate for some reason, and truthfully only have one night left together and they'll never know what could have been because of some sort of outlying circumstances. Not a one night stand type thing. You can really feel that emotion, an almost desperate sadness, in the live version from Demolicious. And that bridge breakdown. Jesus. Christ. Especially the full version on Demolicious, or the version at the end of Cuatro... it's so wonderful! It's amazing to hear what came of the song that first surfaced on YouTube in 2010 from the soundcheck. I fell in love with it the minute I first heard it, and it's one of the few songs that wasn't ruined as a finished product on the trilogy. #preach'd

People seem to miss a vital part of the lyric that changes the whole tone of the song into something deeper (the pre-chorus, obviously). It's just perfect, and I guess on the surface it can seem a bit shallow but when you look into it it's actually really emotional. It was absolute perfection for me when it came out because it just connected with me on so many levels. And yeah, that breakdown is easily one of the best musical sections they've ever done. It just feels so epic, Mike actually showcases some creativity with the harmonics, and the rhythm in general makes it kind of euphoric but without being cheesy.
