Pat1308
Yeah, fair point really. If the story was at least made slightly clear in the lyrics it'd be better. There's only so much you can do with a song about a little boy named Train without it coming across as really stupid, though. What? You mean it isn't 'A Little Boy Named Tre'?

AmyxLongview
I remember reading about the backstory of A Little Boy Named Train and thinking the song was gonna be really interesting, and then being utterly disappointed when I heard the song.
ifmemoryserves
i'd never heard anything about the backstory for little boy named train before... definitely puts a new spin on it for me but yeah it doesn't change the fact that it's generally a terrible song
Pat1308
Maybe they should've just gone Hedwig and the Angry Inch-style and made their follow-up to 21CB an epic rock opera all about Train and his genital travails, rather than the Trilogy. And then made it into a musical starring Neil Patrick Harris. Hey, I'd watch the shit out of it. Train and his lost genitals, and Tre and his lost nut. Two people with genital travails - how will they cope with life?
Spike
Train and his lost genitals, and Tre and his lost nut. Two people with genital travails - how will they cope with life? By getting together and creating one giant super-genital out of their remaining ones.

DookieLukie
I never thought I could have been more disappointed in the Trilogy after Breakdown. I was wrong. What do you mean "after Breakdown"?

AlissaGoesRAWR
But the point is, as you said yourself, that it's ironic. If you're taking the piss out of repetitive music it's perfectly understandable to be repetitive in order to make the point. Anyway, obviously I'm no Trilogy-lover, but applying the "lack of lyrical intelligence" shtick to all three albums based on one song seems a bit unfair, especially when you've then pointed out why it's not even that dumb after all. And especially when that song has some of the best verses Billie has ever written. OK, so here's some other examples of shitty repetitive choruses: Let Yourself Go, Troublemaker, Stop When the Red Lights Flash, 99 Revolutions, Walk Away... Or are they all being "ironic?" Doesn't mean I don't like some of the songs, but you can't argue their choruses aren't exactly inspiring.
Spike
You never thought you could be more dissapointed in the Trilogy after Breakdown. What exactly are you saying? That Breakdown was amazing which made the Trilogy, being its follow-up, even more disappointing. You're never going to get me to defend the first three of those songs on any level. They're obviously not meant to be ironic, which made Nick's choice of Kill The DJ as an example pretty terrible

I don't think it was ever meant to be anything complex or thoughtful. Troublemaker has a great riff, but that's about it. SWTRLF...yeah sucky 99 Revs is another call and response song. Best Billie ever wrote remember? Walk Away is just boring on so many levels.

I honestly forgot Walk Away existed until I glanced over the trilogy tracklist to type that post out. Terrible song. Troublemaker sucks too. The other three I can enjoy when I'm in the mood.
Spoopy Doo
I don't think the verses to Walk Away (save for "or a used pair of shoes to go and walk away") are really that bad. Part of me really wants to like the song, but I just can't.

Popular Post Z J
Heres something that's going to rustle some Jimmies but its my honest opinion. Billie Joe as been a self centered ass who thinks the band is all about him ever since the end of the AI tour. The fame went to his head. (The height of this was during the 21CB Tour, he's gotten a bit better lately.) Literally zero evidence to support this opinion, we've been over it before in here. Any "evidence" is absolute rubbish that's judgmental and contrived. The man could be an ass, he could be a saint. But to pretend we know anything is silly
