Anaïs.
Honestly though American Idiot nearly comes close to Tommy and Quadrophenia quality-wise, but only nearly. I honestly think it beats Tommy; I love that album, but it hasn't aged well in several ways.
Sauli
I honestly think it beats Tommy; I love that album, but it hasn't aged well in several ways. Yes, the concept is very laughable and it has some weak tracks. It reflects its own era perfectly. But a blind, deaf and dumb boy who beats everyone at pinball...is honestly quite stupid idea. And I know it is allegorical, but it isn't very good allegory after all. But Quadrophenia can seriously be considered as one of the best albums EVER, so sorry Billie No wonder why Billie named his protagonist Jimmy btw
Hermione
If people want to fangirl whatever just don't be blind and understand there are bands that do things way better than Green Day and their precious Billie Joe then I have no problems with such behavior. Just because someone rates Green Day more highly it doesn't mean they're blind or a fangirl. People judge what makes a band good in different ways and have different tastes, it's subjective. No wonder why Billie named his protagonist Jimmy btw Indeed! I love watching the film of that, who needs a film of the story of American Idiot when one already exists. (also my uncle was an extra in the beach brawl scene )

With the exception of the obvious standouts ("The Real Me" is my favorite song of theirs bar none) it's not about really great songs, but the atmosphere it creates is spectacular, and in spite of the fact that it's their most synth-heavy album until Who Are You it somehow avoids feeling dated. And it's probably their only studio album to efectively capture their live sound. I still rank Who's Next higher--if ever there was a perfect album, that's it--but my esteem for Quad. grows on each listen.

Ahh yeah I'd agree there, if it's at the point of acting like nothing else is good. Just preferring I have no problem with though.

But when some people think green Day basically came out of nowhere with no influences, it is idiocy. And Quadrophenia is so big, so complex, so gigantic, that it takes time to get to know and still you discover something new every time. Its an amazing journey every time you listen to it. Its one of those albums that can easily make me cry. And when it comes down to individual songs, Who's Next is the best, but I appreciate Quadrophenia more. Who's Next will always be shadowed by the ghost of Lifehouse. At least I feel so.
Anaïs.
Lifehouse. At least I feel so. To be fair, so is basically every second album of theirs. If nothing else, Quadrophenia is awesome in that it's really the last proper Who album. By Numbers is great but it really feels like a Pete solo album with Roger on vocals, and everything after that grows increasingly half-arsed. Love Reign O'er Me could be the best song ever to end a career. And as for Lifehouse, I am sure it is partly why Pete's creativity started to decrease. It was just too ambitious, like Smile or other famous albums that never were. As far as i know it nearly took his life... but it is amazing how after that failure he was still able to come up with Quadrophenia. Quadrophenia is so perfect that sometimes its imperfect name bugs me but maybe it just makes it more charming.

I know it massively drained him, but honestly I think it was By Numbers that nailed the coffin shut. When you've done something that raw and confessional it's hard to go back to more standard pop immediately. Who Are You is just a clusterfuck on an almost Trilogy scale. Yeah, but it's hard to think of another title for it that's not glaringly obvious.

Yeah, but it's hard to think of another title for it that's not glaringly obvious. By Numbers was a consequence of that draining Lifehouse caused. But i guess Lifehouse drained him nearly completely, but after that he amazingly found some power to make Quadrophenia. Like after that failure he wanted to show he can still create an epic album. But after the pain of the cancelled Lifehouse and Quadrophenia which was made by the last traces of willpower he had, it feels like Who By Numbers was just him vomiting it all out. And after that....yes basically i agree with your point. It would be the same as if John Lennon had released something like A Hard Days Night after The Plastic Ono Band, I guess, if that makes sense.
Spike
I still insist that Oh Love is the highlight of the album. I thought you were meant to be a rationalist.

Spike
The intro of Oh Love is great and the solo is pretty good, but as soon as the whole band comes in it's just a world of no.

Any opinons represented here may not necessarily mean that the author thinks so. In the case some difficulties appear, blame it on insomnia. I'm not sure I can live in a world where a top 5 of Fell For You, Stay The Night, Nuclear Family, Kill The DJ and Rusty James in that order isn't universally accepted. The Disappearing Boy
Stay the Night is definitely the best song on Uno I enjoy that solo in Oh Love way way more than I should. 'Enjoy' and 'Oh Love' don't belong in the same sentence, so it definitely was way more than you should.

Kill the DJ is annoying, Rusty James unmemorable and Stay the Night is nice but only nice. And Fell For You is musically dull andl lyrically horrible
