fukingcounterstrike Posted June 3, 2014 Posted June 3, 2014 Tubthumping is still my favorite GD song Quote
Spike Posted June 3, 2014 Author Posted June 3, 2014 why is that even a word Because dumbass Dingles. Quote
AlissaGoesRAWR Posted June 3, 2014 Posted June 3, 2014 Well, like I said, filler was the wrong word. But crappy useless songs on the album are as follows: Song of the Century. Boring, pointless way to open an album. Know Your Enemy. Great song live, boring and repetitive on the album. Christian's Inferno. Oh look, The Network is back. Last of the American Girls. Something about the lyrics is just really awkward to me. Like the song tries to hard to be about some mystery cool girl. Horseshoes and Handgrenades. Boring as fuck, nothing interesting happening musically or lyrically. See the Light. Repetitive, boring, and a really lackluster way to end an album. Honorable mention: 21 Guns. It's pretty, sure, but it's pandering so hard to the radio-friendly ballad market. The whole concept album that tells a story thing. It's like they're trying to tell a story but lost interest halfway through. Agree with pretty much everything, except I can typically tolerate LOTAG and H&H is one of my guilty pleasures. But yeah, 21CB = severely overrated, imo. On a vaguely related note, since Kay touched on it briefly, the way Billie writes about women is one of the things that made Green Day stand out in a big way. Part of the reason I abhor Dos so much is because it's such a massive departure from that empowering message that is Green Day's trademark, and instead we just get shit like Makeout Party and Fuck Time. People can argue that they're fun songs, and that's fine, but they're not what Green Day is about, and are completely at odds with their back catalogue that includes songs like She, Maria, 80, and so many others. This x 43252980467. I just can't wrap my head around the appeal of a Green Day song that uses a phrase like "bmx-cellent tits" to describe a woman, even if it is in jest. I mean, even songs like Jinx and Blood, Sex and Booze with themes of S&M have some class. Although Fuck Time is also a guilty pleasure... At least the live performances, anyway. Quote
UNICORN VOMIT Posted June 3, 2014 Posted June 3, 2014 Bmx-cellent tits probably is worthy of its own thread 1 Quote
The Disappearing Boy Posted June 3, 2014 Posted June 3, 2014 The person has tits like a BMX? Stop doing drugs, Billie. Quote
captain peroxide Posted June 3, 2014 Posted June 3, 2014 The person has tits like a BMX? Small, tough and good for doing tricks. I don't see a problem with his choice of metaphor. 4 Quote

Yep. I mean, like you said, they're fun songs and with titles like that, obviously nuance isn't going to be plentiful, but they're just so try-hard and just show a regression in the way Billie writes about his feelings about women. I think he's capable of writing songs about sexual desire and lust that also maintain admiration and respect for the girls that he exhibits in songs like the ones you mention. Quote
Sauli Posted June 3, 2014 Posted June 3, 2014 That's what is called mid-life crisis. He's trying to get back his lost youth by writing songs like that. Poor fellah. Quote

Maria's a personification. Great explanation! Still cool that they'd choose a badass female character as the metaphor though, it's still a good indication of their attitude towards women and the way they're portrayed in their songs even if it isn't literal. 2 Quote
Spike Posted June 3, 2014 Author Posted June 3, 2014 The true meaning of that line will be debated until the end of time. Maybe he thinks that bikes look like tits from the side. Or something. I'll just be eternally grateful he didn't go for skateboard-cellent fanny tbh. 2 Quote
Hermione Posted June 3, 2014 Posted June 3, 2014 Just go back and read my amazing in depth interpretations of that line, all your questions answered That's what is called mid-life crisis. He's trying to get back his lost youth by writing songs like that. Poor fellah.I think he explored themes of a mid life crisis in the songs, looking at what would happen if those thoughts and temptations were given into, the good and bad consequences, and ultimately seeing (as shown in Amy and then the songs on Tre) that it's not such a good idea! I think he was exploring the idea of a mid life crisis with those songs rather than actually having one, which is a bit less worthy of pity Quote

The Disappearing Boy Posted June 3, 2014 Posted June 3, 2014 sorry, hang on. tough? like the expression "tough titties" or is that an actual desirable trait in a boob? :| Perhaps that's what Billie likes when it comes to boobs. That line makes perfect sense now. 1 Quote
Guest Posted June 3, 2014 Posted June 3, 2014 Billie likes his boobs like he likes his women: Strong and tough. And tattooed with pigs sniffing glue. Quote
