Objectively their best work (as in the quality of the songwriting and production) or your favourite, cos there's a difference? The level of pedantry we employ in this thread is remarkable.

My favorite. I dunno. Everything since AI (besides Demolicious, which is what the trilogy should've been) has been disappointing.

I do. I wasn't expecting anything in particular, and obviously at the time I got caught up in the emotional rush of new music from a band I love, but with time, I've realized that it's not very good.

I will defend 21CBD to the death tbh.

It's half filler bullshit. And a lot of the rest of the songs aren't THAT good, either.

Why would a seventy-minute album have filler? The average album length is forty minutes, surely they never thought it had to be longer. They even cut out Drama Queen to make room for a more fitting song. Are there any you don't think serve an actual purpose to the album's concept?

No, I'm sure they all serve some purpose to the concept. The concept is weak and a crappy re-do of American Idiot, though. And I guess "filler" wasn't the best word to use, but there's just a lot of mediocre songs.

I will defend 21CBD to the death tbh.

As will I, with the exception of a few songs. Though I do agree with the criticism that there is a bit too much filler, which I think is why it never scores too highly on my list of favourite GD albums.

HALF FILLER BULLSHIT.

Tell me what you think is filler.

Well, like I said, filler was the wrong word. But crappy useless songs on the album are as follows:

Song of the Century. Boring, pointless way to open an album.

Know Your Enemy. Great song live, boring and repetitive on the album.

Christian's Inferno. Oh look, The Network is back.

Last of the American Girls. Something about the lyrics is just really awkward to me. Like the song tries to hard to be about some mystery cool girl.

Horseshoes and Handgrenades. Boring as fuck, nothing interesting happening musically or lyrically.

See the Light. Repetitive, boring, and a really lackluster way to end an album.

Honorable mention: 21 Guns. It's pretty, sure, but it's pandering so hard to the radio-friendly ballad market.

21st Century Breakdown doesn't tell a story though. It uses personifications of ideas to talk about the post-Bush, full-swing War on Terrorism America.

And it doesn't do it well, that's my point. The whole Christian and Gloria thing is so overhyped in terms of the song titles and lyrical references, but they aren't actually developed as metaphors in the songs very well.

What Zack said. For a long time I failed to appreciate it because I spent too much time looking for a story that simply isn't there. Once I gave up on it, it really struck me what a strong album it is. The only similarity with American Idiot is that it's big.

It's too big, just like the Trilogy. Green Day needs a good editor. A lot of the songs are strong, especially American Eulogy. They'd have a lot more punch to them if they weren't mired down by the bad stuff.

I'll give you that, quality control has always been their weakest point. I wouldn't compare it to the Trilogy though, because at least the songs are all on one record and form a cohesive album, even if it can be considered overblown.

True, but they both suffer from the same problem of having some really amazing songs that don't shine bright enough because they're surrounded by mediocrity.

I'm not, though. Even without that angle, a lot of the songs just don't do it for me at all. That might be a personal preference thing, but they just come off as either too bland, or too ham-handed.

I like the way Billie writes about women but LotAG is like that style taken to an almost comical extreme, for me.

Nice review. Another thing that bothered me about the album was the over-reliance on metaphor. It seems like every word Billie's singing is just a stand in or symbol for something else.

On a vaguely related note, since Kay touched on it briefly, the way Billie writes about women is one of the things that made Green Day stand out in a big way. Part of the reason I abhor Dos so much is because it's such a massive departure from that empowering message that is Green Day's trademark, and instead we just get shit like Makeout Party and Fuck Time. People can argue that they're fun songs, and that's fine, but they're not what Green Day is about, and are completely at odds with their back catalogue that includes songs like She, Maria, 80, and so many others.
