Guest
In all fairness, AI is basically "stadium punk". They even performed We Are The Champions frequently on the AI tour, a song by another stadium rock band who also got a musical. The musical is still utter wank though. Spike
The songs in the musical aren't punk songs though. They're AI songs (debateably, "punk songs") rearranged as musical songs. I refer you back to what I said about Letterbomb. How has that been rearranged?
green day is
I refer you back to what I said about Letterbomb. How has that been rearranged? The vocal style is completely different. They don't have to change the entire thing for it to be rearranged.
Z J
they are broadway actors. what exactly do you expect? Darth Praxus summed that up pretty well But the dramatics of it all doesn't mean it can't be edgier. I thought Tony Vincent did well, i though Billie did well. I love John Gallagher as an actor but I didn't really see this as a good role for him.
green day is
But the dramatics of it all doesn't mean it can't be edgier. So you (and presumably others in this thread) just wish it had been edgier. That doesn't mean it was bad.
Z J
So you (and presumably others in this thread) just wish it had been edgier. That doesn't mean it was bad. I actually don't think it was as bad as everyone else does. I think it lacked the edginess it claimed it had. I thought there were some really interesting things about it. I'm not much of a musical man myself though
Daughter.of.Rage.and.Love
I refer you back to what I said about Letterbomb. How has that been rearranged? Zack said it already, but it was rearranged vocally. Plus it's in a different context (namely, a musical as opposed to a rock album), which also contributes to how the song is appraised. I don't wish it had been edgier, necessarily. I'd have liked it if the music had been rearranged to suit the singers' voices better, that's all. Jollyroger118
I really cant get into the musical cause it sounds like karaoke. I recently watched broadway idiot and cringed every time they sang. But I like the parts where they interviewed the band about the album and stuff. And I'm glad Green Day did it since a lot of people seem to enjoy it and I like that they aren't afraid to try new creative things. I just wish it didn't suck so bad. JOE THE X-KID
I will say, when I see Broadway idiot it makes me wish they recorded 21 Guns differently
Popular Post Sauli
I like 21st Century Breakdown as much as American Idiot.
JOE THE X-KID
I don't really care for a storyline, I just want an album of solid songs
Davey Elmer
Not sure if this is an unpopular opinion or not, but here we go: the Tom Kitt arrangements of the songs from American Idiot are better than the versions that Green Day originally released (the same thing goes for Know Your Enemy, and Last Night on Earth, and [especially] 21 Guns). Hermione
Damn. That is unpopular I dunno if it is. Probably is with a lot of the people who happen to frequent this thread as a lot of us aren't huge AI musical fans but from reading threads about the musical I'd say there's lots of big fans of it who share that opinion. Probably more divisive than unpopular.
Davey Elmer
Billie Joe himself expressed similar sentiments, but didn't go quite as far as I have. I've also got to add Last of the American Girls to my earlier statement; the mashup version is better than the album version.

Anaïs.
I've also got to add Last of the American Girls to my earlier statement; the mashup version is better than the album version. I can at least understand why you'd prefer the other arrangements, but the mashup is painful. Why do you like it?
Davey Elmer
^ I like the faster pace of the mashup and feel like LotAG works better shortened.

Guest
I'll never forgive Last Of The American Girls for being part of the worst thing Green Day have ever done. Forget Nightlife, just look at this utter arsegravy.
