TheGrouch33
I mean in the sense that it might not have been complete in terms of writing etc. You my friend, are in the right thread! true, in that case we cant really compare both songs....I knew my opinion on Homecoming was going to stir things up around here muahahahahaha How is Homecoming a mess? homecoming really feels like a bunch of individual songs that dont really fit together. Compared to Jesus of suburbia the flow of the song seems forced to me, its all over the place

Anaïs.
The question stands It's totally obvious that the only reason it's there is to give Tre something to do. Even if it's about Jesus it's a big stretch, as he's clearly still a teenager in "We're Coming Home Again" vs. the middle-aged character in R&RGF, but it's even worse the way the band tried to retcon it, with the whole section being sung by an entirely new character who exists only to sing that section and then leave. It's a lazy way to shoehorn Tre into a song that would be much better without his intrusion.
The Disappearing Boy
I just listened to Homecoming again for the first time in a while. It's still one of Green Day's best songs It's totally obvious that the only reason it's there is to give Tre something to do. It's a tad out of place true, but so what? it sounds great and gives Tre a chance to sing.

Don't get me wrong, I love Homecoming to death too; that just doesn't change the fact that it is indeed a mess and muddies the album's story. Certified Nimrod
What does everyone prefer - the sax solo they do live, or the guitar solo on the album? The Static Age has one of my favorite Green Day guitar solos, so it always makes me sad to hear the sax cover it up. Yeah, yeah, I'm in the right thread, etc.,etc.
Popular Post Z J
Are we all going to ignore the fact that Lady Nightlife seems to dislike the studio recording of When I Come Around?? But seriously fuck off When I Come Around is the best song on Dookie and it is one of the top 5 melodies they've written. The riff is also their best. And the lyrics are quite good for the most part.

As a youngling who's had middle aged and older friends there comes a certain point where its hard to relate. It rings true to me. And it's a good way of showing how the underbelly moved on from one of their perspectives. And I love the studio but my favorite versions from when they were on BBC radio

Hermione
When I Come Around is great but I don't think it's anything special as a live song (aside from the alternative lyrics Billie likes to sing ). But as Mike excellently describes with both words and actions at around the 2 minute mark here people seem to really like it for some reason http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hKTP7-4Mlk4 Yes it is the best song and you should feel bad. I agree
The Platypus!
American Eulogy and The Static Age are hurt by their production, and AE suffers from weak lyrics at several point. Whereas EJN is perfectly produced, lyrical perfection, and full of some of the purest vitriol Green Day has put on an album. While it'd be nice to see Homecoming live, Paper Lanterns isn't anything special and Billie can't remember The Grouch for shit. I'd rather see them do WICA and Brain Stew as they're songs that everyone present loves and always get the crowd pumped. I'd definitely be in favor of cutting KYE and some of the other bits of the Greatest Hits montage, though. American Eulogy is my favourite song off the album, especially live. Nooooooooooooooo come on someone has to back me up here that WICA and Brain Stew/Jaded are poor live. Even Give Me Novacaine is better. KYE has become engrained in the setlist now I think. But Nuclear Family should have definitley opened the trilogy shows and then 99 Revolutions and removed KYE.
The Disappearing Boy
Brain Stew is boring full stop. If you don't like WICA, you're wrong.
Popular Post Hermione
I love Brain Stew, it sounds so different to their other songs (and especially stands out on Insomniac where most of the songs sound very similar to each other) with the hint of metal, and just the slow structure of the verses with the "dun na, dun na, dun na" guitar gradually building up is really interesting. The lyrics are fantastic as well, I still remember seeing the first verse written on a school desk years before I got into Green Day and being impressed with the line "My eyes feel like they're gonna bleed". Also love it live, it's amusing how they've always poked fun at themselves for making a "metal" song by playing tongue in cheek metal covers to introduce it, the call and response with the guitar at the beginning is fun and the whole thing is a cool change of pace in the show. Never understood why it tends to be disliked so much, there's many more generic "typical Green Day" sounding songs that I'd call boring before a song that has so much more interesting stuff going on and sounds different to anything else they've done.

Hermione
I hate Nightlife. Rap + Green Day = Just no. Yeah you're not alone there haha! I wouldn't even really call it rap though, like it is technically rap but it's as close to not as it could be , Lady Cobra is a member of a punk band and it sounds more like sultry talking than proper rapping in Nightlife, and the song only has a subtle hip hop sound to it. I like Nightlife anyway, but I'd be interested to hear them do a song with a well known/credible rap artist to hear what a proper Green Day rap song could be like. Also do you like Like A Rat Does Cheese? If so it might interest you to know that most of the lyrics (including "nibble on my dick like a rat does cheese" and "suck my dick until your lips fall off") are quotes from classic gangsta rap songs. I think rap + Green Day can definitely work in some contexts.
AmyxLongview
They should have featured Kesha in Nightlife instead of Lady Cobra. But I'm biased because I really love Kesha. It would have given more exposure to the trilogy!
Purple Haze
When I Come Around is always the absolute highlight live and I see no reason why they should ever drop it. They do need to change their setlist dramatically though. The 99 revs tour was way too similar to the 21CB tour setlist.

How would you change it then? I can't see a major fault with it maybe a few songs exchanged but you still have to have the main body of songs.
