Z J
I'd go so far as to say that Sassafras Roots is the second best song on Dookie, behind When I Come Around. Yeah, I went there. She?

Z J
With Insomniac, there are some songs for me that are expendable. Here's are some examples: "Panic Song", "Westbound Sign" and "Tightwad Hill". Probably some of my least favorite Green Day songs ever. Something in the water today? Hell naw Panic Song ain't expendable. Some of the best lyrics they've ever produced. What about her? She deserves better than to be put beneath Sassafras "We get it Billie you like to waste time" Roots
Spike
She deserves better than to be put beneath Sassafras "We get it Billie you like to waste time" Roots Damn you for editing your post to include something I disagree with after I've already liked it She goes up and down in my ranking, really. That said, it rarely breaks my top 5 on Dookie.

AlissaGoesRAWR
Actually, most people in this thread like 21CB quite a bit—I don't prefer it to AI like you do, but it's in my top five for sure. I was referring specifically to Horseshoes and Handgrenades—for some reason NO ONE likes that song and I can't fathom why. I... I like it... I know She's a Rebel is probably the most-hated song on American Idiot, but I like it and it fits the story. If you think about it, it's the only happy moment throughout the whole story. Jesus/St. Jimmy is happy for a brief time, while he and Whatshername first get together. In the the next song, he feels like dying, she is sick of crying - things start going bad. So I think, while it's not the greatest song in world, it serves the story well, and gives the characters at least a bit of hope in the midst of pain and heartbreak. On an interesting note, the song is also sort of about the statue of liberty. Most-hated? I dunno, I'd say Extraordinary Girl might be the most-hated. But it's probably second place, you're right. But personally, I think She's a Rebel is great! It's so poppy and catchy, and like you said, it's a real pick-me-up in the album and depicts Whatsername's character well! It's always been one of my favorite songs. It's simple and accomplishes what it needs to in the narrative of the album. That parallel between now and the Warning era truly does exist IMO. Not only with Billie's persona/image but also where they are musically and where they are in the eyes of the mainstream. There are definitely many hints of Warning-esque things in the trilogy songs. There's a big parallel. Not sure why they really regressed to that sort of sound again because it wasn't exactly popular before... but then again, they were convinced it was a "new sound," apparently. Much. "Sassafrass Roots" and "Pulling Teeth" could easily have been cut from Dookie... Uh, EXCUSE ME? sassafras roots could have easily been cut from dookie? westbound sign is expendable? what the fuck is wrong with u people I knew you'd come to rescue this thread. Everyone else is dumb.

The lyrics have such a universally relatablel message, the bassline is killer, and the hook is irresistible. Oh yeah, I agree with all these things, and the backing vocals are some of the band's best, but... Well, I never actually said I don't like it, but as a complete song it doesn't jump out at me as much as other songs on Dookie. That might be She's A Rebel syndrome though, in that it's from such a strong album it's hard to appreciate despite being good. The production kills it for me—like it so much better live. That's an interesting one, what don't you like about the production? That said, anything with Mike's live bass tone is gonna be far better than studio versions. Everyone else is dumb. *AHEM*

It just feels flat to me, and Billie's voice is weirdly buried in the mix compared to the rest of the album's songs. The former is actually a problem I have with a lot of Dookie, actually--it sounds flat compared to its successors, particularly Nimrod. and AI. I see what you mean, and I guess it's down to the fact that it's got some seemingly out of place production values. Like the amount of compression, for example, just ends up crushing everything since there are only two guitars on there as opposed to 7 or 8 like on, say, Breakdown. But at the same time there's still a decent amount of dynamic range on there, and the guitars have got some serious balls when they come in for the first chorus of She, so I can't complain too much. Spike
To be fair I actually quite like the buried vocal sound, especially when the backing vocals are louder than the lead so we get to hear more of Mike. The chorus of Having A Blast sounds more like Mike taking the lead than backing, and it's awesome.

While I do enjoy Dookie, it will never be a "favorite" album of mine for myriad reasons, and this is one of them.

Hermione
I don't see what's wrong with letting the conversation develop organically. This thread has always been really fun and one of my personal favorites because it's a place where I can argue about Green Day and hear some really interesting opinions, but it's also a place where we have full-blown conversations and it's not interrupted by a lot of "Get back on topic." It was bound to spend more time going down rabbit-holes than sticking to the topic anyway, there's only so many times I can say I like "Nightlife" or DookieLukie can say American Idiot is shite If it happens naturally starting off from an unpopular opinion being posted then I don't have a problem with it. But when people come here to start a new conversation with something totally not unpopular like "I like *insert Green Day album*", or to ask a question that should be in the Q&A thread, or to ask "what's your favourite...", or just to say something random they have on their mind about the band, then they could do that in a more appropriate thread and have the conversation there. It's a shame if the rest of the threads in Green Day Chat go dead and new ones don't get made just because it's easier to post everything in here. So all I'm saying is if you want to talk about something think about if there's a more appropriate thread to post about it or if you could make a new one before you just post it here by default, there's plenty to talk about here just from unpopular opinions and the discussions that follow on from them alone so spread the other stuff out a bit! I've always disliked Having a Blast for the reason that the vocals are buried in comparison to the rest of Dookie. If you listen to the Rock Band vocals track, it certainly doesn't sound like Mike is taking the lead, but yeah it does sound like that in the real song. That Dude
Right? I wouldn't call any songs off those albums "expendable". Westbound Sign is great I love the riff and the lyrics and it gives a special view on Adrienne. And to the guy who said Christians Inferno is worse than anything but Wild One...have you heard the rest of the trilogy?? Wild Ones actually one of my favorites from it, mostly for the music. And I like Christians Inferno, I love the totally bitter lyrics and my favorite "I am the atom bomb, I am your chosen one, toxin your reservoir and then return...MAN TO APE!" How could you not like it? Wow, there's a lyric i had wrong all this time. I thought it was "tossed in your reservoir". Had no idea it was "toxin". hmmm. Z J
I think the first half of Chump could have been my favorite song off of Dookie. The melody and the runs are perfect. Lyrics are solid as well. But the long instrumental, while not bad, doesn't do much for me. I almost always skip it after the singing is over.
