Z J
Ladies and gentlemen, we have a thread winner! Aside from Billie's near-deadpan (stoned?) delivery. Who wrote Holden Caulfield?, 80, One of My Lies, One for the Razorbacks, 2000 LYA, Christie Road, Private Ale and Welcome to Paradise make for quite the competition for Dookie. Sure, nothing comes close to She or When I Come around (IMO) but if these songs had better production I don't think this opinion would be too unpopular. And the delivery (I think) is part stoned, part bad production.
Hermione
To say they only do it for fun is a bit of a mis-characterization. They certainly have fun, but I think for example, the whole AI-image renewal and media-blitz was money motivated and I think it was clear that the band wanted to be popular again. And there is nothing wrong with that at all, but they certainly aimed to profit. Oh yeah those parts of it are for that for sure. It's only the writing/creating songs part that I'm saying has to be motivated by enjoying it and being artistically inspired. There's nothing wrong with wanting music you've made to be successful and make money and doing everything you can to ensure that once it's made by packaging and promoting it well and Green Day do that just like any other music act. But if that was the motivation for actually writing the songs and making artistic choices, if they created music by trying to guess what would please fans and be popular instead of creating music they feel inspired to create and then hoping it does well due to the public liking it as much as them and with the help of good marketing, then they'd be a bunch of shitty soulless songs and there'd be no point in them bothering to carry on doing it. Spike
then they'd be a bunch of shitty soulless songsNow you're just asking for trouble But yeah, I agree entirely. I like to think if they were only in it for the money it'd be totally obvious.
ifmemoryserves
oh my gosh I've never spoken to you before or even seen you on here but I remember that someone once sent me anon hate on ask.fm saying that I was the new you, and I have no idea what that's supposed to mean but apparently it was an insult??? Also shut up, Kerplunk is my fave lol yeah it was probably an insult. i was quite hated(/loved??? i guess hated?? who even knows) on here back in the day. interesting that someone made that connection though. maybe we'd get along. or they were just being stupidhaha anyways i don't have anything against kerplunk i've just never actually like... forced myself to listen to it all the way through. i'm sure if i sat down and actually tried, i wouldn't mind it but i'm just not that into it. The Disappearing Boy
I'd say give it a go. Ignore the crappy recording quality and bear in mind they were like 19 when they wrote the songs, it's not too bad. First half is definitely better than the second. Spike
If you have to force yourself to listen to something you can't think it's that good in the first place.
Tightwad Hill
I don't know if these are unpopular opinions. But, 21st Century Breakdown is worse than the trilogy. As in worse, I mean WAY WORSE. The only good song that came out of it was East Jesus Nowhere. I liked Rest from 1039/Smoothed Out Slappy Hours and I don't understand why many of you guys hate it. The worst Green Day music videos have to be Kill The DJ (represents why many diehard fans hate the new stuff now) and Wake Me Up When September Ends (too boring). Guest
THAT is what you find to complain about in the last few posts? I've long since accepted that people who don't like 21stCB are lost causes and now I just giggle at them. Same goes for Kerplunk. Actually, Ceri fits that bill too

gruender4039
Ok guys, green days not a perfect band but they got to expand their music to keep on keepin on! Yes their trilogy is not their 1990's punk music it used to be. Their still doing well as a band and unless your as successful as them i would say dont judge them! Its ridiculous guys, to judge a famous band whos still makin good music, its not their best but you all love green day so stop hatin on em so much! Peace! The Trilogy was a reduction, not an expansion. Their still doing well as a band 2. HA! The Trilogy tanked, as you're well aware. unless your as successful as them i would say dont judge them! 3. I absolutely loathe that argument. I can't cook, but I know a shitty burger if I eat it. a famous band 4. They're not really famous at this point, hate to break it to you. you all love green day so stop hatin on em so much 5. We love them, but it's not a blind love. We're allowed to dislike stuff they put out rather than slavishly devoting ourselves to everything Billie vomits out, and quite honestly that makes us more discerning and better fans. Also, that spelling made my eyes bleed.

Z J
21Cb is better than the trilogy by far. I mean Billie's vocals and the harmonies are enough to put it miles ahead of the trilogy.
