Daughter.of.Rage.and.Love
I think the guys are perfectly capable of producing another great album. It's a shame they completely missed the mark (or well, three marks) with the Trilogy, but if they would select a bit more thorough I don't see why they couldn't make more new music. It's not like there aren't any good songs on the Trilogy or that they've suddenly lost their musical abilities. It just didn't shine through on the Trilogy. I do wonder how they should go about that though. Trying hard to reinvent themselves or make another epic album isn't going to work (see 21stCB, which is a good album, but compared to AI it shrivels up imo), and making it all about casualness and fun clearly didn't work either (see the Trilogy). Guest
They're still only in their early 40s, there's plenty more time for them to make a comeback. They won't settle for becoming a greatest hits band just yet, they're writing music all the time. Bands that are still making good and relevant music at 40+ are few and far between. Bruce Springsteen and The E Street Band and the Foo Fighters are literally the only ones I can think of off the top of my head, the rest being individual artists like Paul McCartney (whose relevance is debatable). Rock music is invariably the work of the young.
Maddy.
Maybe for Foo Fighters, but that's not even true of Green Day, let alone any other band you care to mention. Big sellers =\= the best songs. Oh it definitely is for everything pre-American Idiot. Except for Insomniac, that album is just dreadful all the way through.
Purple Haze
I don't think they should become a greatest hits band. Maybe I'll agree if whatever they do next is poor quality.

So that you wouldn't just be working off of the opinions of one tiny minority of the fandom? Nah, I have right on my side.
Anaïs.
Plus, they tried swapping Good Riddance for it as a concert-closer. Um, fuck you. No. I'll agree with you 100% there. Plus who actually claims to like DRB anymore? *raises hand*
The Disappearing Boy
What makes a great* album is whether it taps into the zeitgeist. Whether it tells people what they want to hear. That is entirely out of Green Day's control, but if they can tap into the zeitgeist, they have the ability to make a great* album again. *I mean great as in sales and critical reviews. So successful, basically.
Anaïs.
If they do become a greatest hits band, I really hope they stop before they hit sixty. Most people here seem to think they'll keep going until one of them dies (a bewilderingly optimistic view, but nevermind), but I would never want that for them. I was just watching footage of The Who and The Rolling Stones performing at that age, and save for the former at the Concert for New York they're fucking depressing. I mean, the Stones were never a great live band, but even their energy has gone way down, and The Who are such a ghost of their former selves it's sad. I don't want to see the same thing with Billie, Mike and Tre.
Pat1308
Unpopular opinion? The two and a half minutes of State of Shock is better than eight to ten Trilogy songs combined.

I don't want to see the same thing with Billie, Mike and Tre. AC/DC though. I saw them about 5 years ago and they were incredible, despite every single one of them being past retirement age. 2 and a half hour set, all the old hits, plus 3 or 4 of the best from their newest album. We even got a 10 minute solo from Angus. Bands can still do it at that age, it just depends on how into it they still are.
Anaïs.
Unpopular opinion? The two and a half minutes of State of Shock is better than eight to ten Trilogy songs combined. I like it, don't love it. The verse melody is great, but the chorus is annoying, and the lyrics can be iffy. Still better than most everything on Dos, though.

Still better than most everything on Dos, though. It basically suffers from the same repeat-the-sentence-passing-itself-off-as-the-chorus-for-the-nth-time-itis as a number of the Trilogy songs do, so I know what you mean. Speaking of which, come to think of it, many Green Day songs even before the Trilogy are kinda repetitive (KYE and Going to Pasalacqua are two examples that come off the top of my head). But it is really around 21CB-the Trilogy that the guys outdid themselves: repeating the same sentence over and over again. (Once again, SWTRLF.) What's next: a chorus consisting of repetitions of a single word? "FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCKFUCKFUCKFUCKFUCK"
Anaïs.
What's next: a chorus consisting of repetitions of a single word? "Platypus" is essentially one word. "Cuzzzeighaightchew, cuzzzeighaightchew, cuzzzeighaightchew, cuzzzeighaightchew!"

Purple Haze
And no one complains about Billie's shite 3 minute solos that completely ruin American Idiot live? Yeah, he pretty much has a small handful of licks that he throws into everything. Then again, it would be a lot worse if Jason did it. The Disappearing Boy
Unpopular opinion? The two and a half minutes of State of Shock is better than eight to ten Trilogy songs combined. Agreed. State of Shock isn't the best, but it could easily walk onto any Trilogy album. I mean can anyone explain why - purely on the basis of the songs - The Forgotten, Amy, most of Dos, Sweet Sixteen, for example, were chosen ahead of State of Shock? Tiago Bueno
I liked the trilogy. I really don't understand why almost everybody seems to hate it. Ok, Dos sucks (except for lazy bones, amy and stray heart) and no song on the trilogy is FUCKING awesome (x-kid is fucking awesome, though), but it's got good songs and shitty songs, like every Green Day album. Out of the 37 songs I can put together 17, 18 songs I really liked and that I listen to every week. I don't think they should stop making new songs. They just turned 40. They still have a lot to offer. I just think that they should just stop with the sloppy, over produced sound, and that billie joe should stop with the teen lyrics e do some mature stuff. Just registered on the forum, I'm brazilian, sorry for the bad english. Edited April 21, 2014 by Tiago Bueno
Tiago Bueno
Ow, take it easy rsrs I don't love the trilogy, for me it's like nimrod, dookie, warning, 21st, kerplunk, 1,039. It's got good songs, and bad songs, a lot more bad than good, but still...had it's moments.... Billie joe's live solos (and almost all the albums solos) are really bad. He should stick with the riffs.... Hating the trilogy is not an unpopular opinion. It's pretty much consensus. mulder
Unpopular opinion: I actually like and enjoy listening to the trilogy. I think Dos is actually a good album and that besides A little Boy Named Train, 99 Revolutions, and The Forgotten, Tre was good too. I think most of the songs I dislike off the trilogy are on Uno. Like, I can't stand Oh Love and was disappointed when it was the first single off Uno. But besides that song and Fell For You, I've come to appreciate Uno, and the trilogy, as a whole. Sure, it may not be what American Idiot or 21st Century Breakdown were, but it has a certain vibe and allure to it that I find enjoyable. They will never make anything like dookie, insomniac, or American Idiot again. Those are fucking awesome albums. The rest is pretty good. I'm fine with good green day albums like kerplunk, nimrod, warning, 21st century breakdown. They already did their best. Yes, the trilogy may have not been what we expected it to be, but I don't think it should taint our whole idea of what Green Day can do, considering they have blown us out of the water (multiple times) before. I do believe they still have it within them to create another masterpiece.
