Blasphemy & Genocide: Unpopular Green Day Opinions, Part 2

So strange. I do not believe the Trilogy is the best thing Green Day has done, and I did expect better music than the Trilogy at this point, but I still love most of it and listen to it frequently. There's a few songs I never touch, but I honestly enjoy most of the songs. I can't imagine myself hating all of it.

Saying something is great isn't a convincing argument (see all the arguments that talk about how great God is :P ).

Shots fired

Yeah, I think a lot of Lazy Bones' appeal is to do with emotion. It sticks out as an important song for this era for its connections to Billie's struggle with addiction, but even without that meaning, the lyrics are general enough to apply to many situations. People connect to it. Plus, there's no obvious flaw to pick on like so many of the other trilogy tracks.

My main issue with it is the way it was mixed. I don't know what exactly is wrong with the mix, but something just doesn't seem right.

I can't help but notice you didn't talk about the pitiful reuse of the lyrics "Like a child left behind" from Extraordinary Girl :P (I still like the song though)

Friends don't let friends steal things.

I saw Metallica at Bader Field in Atlantic City and there was a guy selling shirts that said "Badger Field."

Walmart?

We have very different definitions of fat.

Poor Ceadog :(

What do you mean?

Back in 2009, Rolling Stone was selling stuff with cover artists on it; they sold a shirt with their 2004 cover (and maybe the 2009 one, I got that on a poster at Walmart). But it didn't last. Strange, I know

I love Uno Dos and Tre and I think they're excellent albums, I listen to each of them in full at least once a week and listen to something from them pretty much every day, and I don't see anything that makes them "objectively" worse than Green Day's other albums #actual unpopular opinion in this thread

Sorry, I really don't get the hate for it. What is so bad about it?

It's very sappy/cheesy to be fair ("Angeeel, ANGEEEEL, dancing away!" for example). But in the context that it's some plucky teenagers playing it with all their hearts it's sweet, and the music is good quality, so I still enjoy it. And it was written in the 80's when there were far more shockingly cringeworthy rock songs around (power ballads etc) so got to cut it some slack

Apart from the poor lyrical content, lack of production, lack of - wait - I'm not even gonna win this one am I?:P

Rest is brilliant, trippy and relaxing

I like Rest, but yeah, it's an acquired taste (takes some time to getting used to) - especially if you're used to the faster, heavier songs of later Green Day.

To be fair though, just about 95% of their earlier (pre-Kerplunk) work is sappy/cheesy, y'know, stuff adolescent boys write. I mean, 1,000 Hours (and I like that song). ;)

They really have, though. The production's certainly improved, but with very rare exceptions their songs have always been 4/4 time, 3-4 chord pieces with special attention to melodies. If anything, they've begun regressing rather than changing for the positive—Mike's bass has been practically nonexistent since Warning, and Billie's begun recycling chord progressions rather alarmingly frequently.

I'd say that in certain aspects, they're the same but many ways, they're different than what they were in the 90s. Ignoring production, I'd just point out that most of their song from the 90s dealt with personal experiences. Infact, most of their singles were in first person. The sound was raw. With every album, the sound matured. As far as Mike's bass is concerned, I hate the fact that we didn't hear a lot of it in AI or 21st CB. But his basslines were audible again in Dos. Since AI, there was an emphasis on the 2nd guitar, which lacked till Warning. Green Day of the 2000s is nothing like the Green Day of the 90s. The only thing about Green Day's music that has been consistent is Tre's drumming. About Billie recycling chord progressions, I'd give you that. Its a shame that he does that too often, considering the fact that he is capable of making many all by himself. But with Jason now among the ranks, I see a change. Infact, we saw a lot of solos in the trilogy, A LOT.

Wee bit contradictory, eh?

Okay, lets try something. What would someone, having only heard Dookie, mark out as the key aspects of Green Day's sound/style?

  1. Witty, introspective lyrics
  2. Catchy melodies
  3. Powerful yet simple guitar lines
  4. Impressive vocal harmonies
  5. Punchy drum lines that drive the songs forward
  6. Sneaky bass fills

Tell me, honestly, would someone listening to 21stCB not say exactly the same things? With the obvious exception of the bass fills of course. The whole point about "sound maturing" or whatever is a bit irrelevant, considering that's completely a production thing.

Also, I don't know much about your musical tastes, but if you're listening to GD for their guitar solos you're doing something very wrong. They're hardly very impressive.

Disclaimer: the following excludes the Trilogy, for reasons which should become clear.

Green Day has the same basic ideas behind their music, as Ceadog mentioned, but I think you could still say that each album has its own sound and style and tone. I mean, does Warning really sound like American Idiot? Or Dookie like Nimrod? The only similar albums really are Dookie and Insomniac. Considering that they have the same basis to their music, and 85% of it is comprised of 3 power chords, it's quite remarkable just how much they've got out of the same formula. It's quite a talent, really.

Now I see why you have that disclaimer, since the Trilogy is clear evidence of them completely exhausting the formula :P

True (and that's part of its charm, I like all their early work too). I think there's something extra cheesy about Rest though, you can tell they'd heard some dodgy hair metal power ballads before composing it

I'm pretty sure Hermione just trolled the fuck out of us all without anyone realising.

Wrong :P

Of course! I just admire the fact that you're pretty much the only person who sticks up for Green Day in a thread full of people who bash them - and you do an admirable job!

Opinions are what make the world go round :)

Well, gravity and momentum might have something to do with it too.

I think everyone just says their opinions, I just happen to like more things that others dislike it seems haha. And you could be right, the world would probably be so boring without opinions that it'd seem like it'd stopped turning or something :P. Hence the need for the Unpopular Green Day Opinions thread.

Plot twist: the unpopular opinions thread makes the world go round.
