Blasphemy & Genocide: Unpopular Green Day Opinions, Part 2

I'm still not sure about the trilogy, I mean there were little bits of songs that were amazing but yeah it's only bits and pieces not the whole 3 albums. I want to like it but there's too many duds on it tbh, whereas American Idiot was just great.

I hope for their next album they just do what they want. It pisses me off that even if green day do what fans want people still hate it. (no I'm not one of those fans who adores everything btw  ) yeah idk what I'd like the next album to be, as long as it has a fuller sound like ai/21cb because the trilogy just felt flat without the heavier guitars behind it.

If Billie goes back to his witty songwriting, Mike's bass is more than just root notes and tre loses the love for the tambourine it will be infinitely better :P

I listen to Green Day's music so much that I am to the point that I have a hard time listening to anything else. I have discovered that it is not good. I cannot even dance to "dance" music.

The scary thing is that Tre is Mike's least root note-centric record since Warning. Totally nailed the rest of it, though.

Well maybe try some stuff that sounds like Green Day. The Clash, The Ramones, Sex Pistols, etc

I think you're right - there must be some kind of conspiracy here ....

I guess all those excess carbs serve as really good fuel.

Speaking of unpopular, I actually like Nuclear Family. ;)

Don't worry, dance music doesn't make me wanna dance, ever.

^ This. Nuclear Family followed by Stay The Night left me expecting their best work yet (excluding AI). =/

I do talk quite badly about the trilogy because it's so damn easy to find faults with it, but at the end of the day, I did manage to compile an UNO,DOS,TRE-list containing an album's worth of songs that I really enjoyed (which is a rarity, and more than I can say for a couple of other GD albums). There were a few gems in-between the horrific tracks. Is anyone else the same?

Yes, actually. It's really hard for me to find some favorite songs off the trilogy as a whole because as you said - most of the songs there are just not like Green Day's original sound. Honestly, the only songs I actually enjoyed has to be Wow that's loud and Nuclear Family. The others just aren't "there" for me as much as their older songs would be, so it's kind of easy to separate the songs from their best work. I still feel more open to AI, but that's probably just me being biased considering it's my favorite album by them thus far.

Same here. The only enjoyment I get out of 90% of the Trilogy is a feeling of nostalgia for when I first heard it and loved it, but truth be told, I don't enjoy most of it. I have a grand total of 21 Trilogy songs in my iTunes library, 13 of which are in a playlist of what I think would make a decent-ish album.

If you get banned, then you get a daily posting limit for a little while.

Naughty, naughty Ceadog.

Yeah, that's exactly what I did. Surprisingly, it's actually slowly growing. I started out with two tracks from Uno, three from Dos and six from Tre, and I'm now up to seven from Uno, so that's progress. That doesn't mean I'm taking my Dos-bashing back, though!

Yup, mine's about 13 tracks too. I've got them all on iTunes, but the excitement of listening to the albums in full has diminished. I only really listen to the playlist now.

Same here. Except I rarely ever even listen to the playlist now?

I think I have 4 from Uno, 3 from Dos and 6 from Tre. How the hell do you manage to squeeze 7 from Uno?!

Easy! Nuclear Family, Stay The Night (obviously), Carpe Diem, Kill The DJ, Fell For You, Sweet 16, Oh Love.

I don't know how many I have from each album that I would rank from the trilogy as decent songs in my perspective, but I wouldn't imagine the list to be too big. I should probably give them all a listen again and see where I stand on it.

All joking and (not joking) Trilogy bashing aside, can someone please explain the appeal of Lazy Bones to me? I just don't get it.

How is this so absurd? Even Marky Ramone said Green Day sounds just like the Ramones. And the guitar sound of the Sex Pistols is quite similar to Green Day.

Even Green Day's Ramones covers don't sound like the Ramones. Tre's drumming is more complex (lol), Mike's bass playing is certainly more complex, Billie sounds nothing like Joey, and Green Day are far more melody-orientated. I mean sure, the Ramones clearly had a massive influence on Green Day, but it only really comes out in terms of broader style. Once you get into the technical details there's a world of difference. As for the Sex Pistols guitar tone, I'll give you that, but it doesn't mean much.

I was only suggesting this person music that she might like if she likes Green Day. And the Ramones and Sex Pistols do have things in common with Green Day. I don't see how what I said was enough for people to bash.

I agree, I've never liked that song at all and never understood why it seemed to be held in such high regard. As weak an album as Dos is, I actually think it's one of the most forgettable songs of the lot.

It's interesting how even though Green Day are so incredibly generic in so many ways, there is no other band that really sounds like them. Possibly because they pretty much defined the modern pop-punk genre so perfectly no one can match their fairly basic style.

I call this the AC/DC Effect.

Nuclear Family, Stay the Night, Kill the DJ and Let Yourself Go, for me. I can't stand Carpe Diem. Fell For You and Sweet 16 aren't necessarily bad, they're just boring. And I think my feelings on Oh Love are pretty clear!

As explained by yours truly in the old thread, Lazy Bones is great because:

The song starts off with a simple drum track, before the guitar pierces in. There is a great contrast here between the fact that chords are high up on the fretboard, which can give for a more cheerful sound, but the song is in minor key, which adds quite a sinister edge to the over all feel; a feel which is replicated throughout the song. Then in come the vocals. Forget the lyrics for the moment, and just listen to the vocals themselves. The anguish and sadness in Billie's voice are painfully obvious, and the song takes on even more significance in the light of rehab. The lyrics are among the best in the Trilogy. Then in comes the wonderful bass, burbling away in the background, managing to maintain that cheery-yet-sinister feel to the song. This continues in the chorus with the upbeat woah-ohs providing the background to lines like 'I can't take it any more', 'like a prisoner of war' and 'I just wanna get some peace of mind'. In the second verse, the guitar and drum tandem punches through, with the vocals and lyrics continuing to drip with raw emotion. The song climaxes with a brief pause before a simple 4-note solo and the final chorus, before ending with guitar and drums repeating the intro. The song structure, like most songs on the Trilogy, is nothing special. But then it doesn't need to be, as there is plenty enough going on here to keep you interested. It is without doubt a standout song in a poor album, and a standout song in the Trilogy. What it lacks in complexity, it makes up for in heart.

:)

I wasn't bashing, I was just disagreeing and saying why!

Well that's no explanation, that's just describing the structure of the song and putting words such as "great" before mentioning any specific element :P
