That picture of Brittney with the nose bleed and shaved head really upsets me. No one deserves to have to go through that.

Shaved...? Omg I thought she just had a bun... :(

I thought I noticed a bit of hair in the corner of the picture. Hopefully she hasn't actually lost it (yet).

They look incredibly optimist and happy despite the circumstances. I should take a leaf out of their book..

Oh, ok, didn't realize Mike and Britt were going to be THAT open about this... ya know, cuz I think a lot of people would want to keep very private and focus inward during this time. Like think about Billie in rehab, how few pictures we got of him physically during that time, and how there were zero pictures of him actually going THROUGH treatment or anything like that. Obviously circumstances are different but I always imagined it'd be the same process of sharing with this.

Maybe it's just me, but for me personally it's TMI, not that I'm judging them for sharing, it is a brave thing and probably coping mechanism for them. But I just find it a little awkward to post pictures about medical things. I know a nose bleed is totally no big deal, but given the circumstances it's a little... I don't know, uncomfortable. For me. It just opens the door like to photos of her going through treatment and I know people take photos of themselves while they are battling cancer but I always found it a little attention seeking pity-party. I'm not saying Britt and Mike are doing that AT ALL, they are obviously just being total badass motherfuckers about the whole thing, but photos of physical deterioration are just a lot for anyone to deal with.

thank god, I thought I was the only one to think that. Agree 100%.

Ps.this reminds me of that pic Billie posted after his illness in Bologna, of his hand with needles and stuff in it (dont know the right word for that thing) and he deleted it after some minutes..

Kinda off topic, but I've just seen some pics of the singer of Sum41, he posted some pics of himself in the hospital with his body full of bruises and blood and medical things..and I was like:Wow! Did he really need to post that? As Heather said, I find a bit awkward posting pics about medical things too.. but,you know, I am a private person..

maybe this is just Mike and Britt's way to be positive :)

It's just that I have a feeling that they are going to post pictures of her in the hospital and getting chemo and while I don't want them to go underground or anything, I don't really want to see that. I love Mike and I support them fully but yeah... like, my mom had cancer, and as much as I was there for her I didn't exactly take photos and share them with people, nor did I spend any more time than was necessary talking and thinking about it.

I think people react to situations differently. Perhaps putting that photo on sort of trivialised - for lack of a better word - the situation a bit, shed a more upbeat light on something I imagine to be very difficult to deal with. It's sort of the whole 'if you don't laugh you'll cry' mentality.

That said, I don't think they'd go as far as to share anything where she looked really poorly. This was at the end of the day just a nose bleed. A reaction to treatment yes but still a nose bleed.

I think it's a good thing. People too often don't really know what cancer patients have to go through, because so many people feel reserved about sharing too much. People don't like to look like they need pity, many people don't even like asking for help. So as a result, so many people don't realize how hard it is for people to go through this. If it helps makes people aware and get some empathy and understanding out there, I'm all for it. I also think it's a good reminder that even for people who seem to have it all - happy family, good looks, lots of money - face these struggles as well. It's a very human thing, and one that only in the last few decades have people starting being vocal about it and helping to spread awareness that it's something we as a society need to deal with.

Yeah, you're right. I guess I'm just saying this as someone who doesn't feel like I need any more awareness --- I am all too aware. I think just seeing the word cancer in Mike's message to the fans was more than enough for a lot of us to know and feel empathy, because many people know and/or lost someone who has had cancer.

There are so many blogs out there documenting people going through chemo and whatnot. They're not bad, they expose a tragic reality. I know Mike and Britt are doing this as a way of being transparent and maintaining a close relationship of support with fans. I get all of that. It just feels like a dangerous/ill-advised move on their end since Mike is a public figure. I suppose as the bass player in Green Day he doesn't exactly run the risk of this being plastered all over tabloids, he's not a proper 'celebrity' in that sense, but I think that's where my guard is coming from. Maybe it's fine because he's not *that* famous, I can just pretend he's doing this as a regular dude. But if Brad Pitt was posting pics of Angelina Jolie's masectomies and all that, we'd have very different judgments of their motives. And considering Mike and Britt have thousands and thousands of fangirls following them, it's a little strange when it comes to publicity.

I keep going back in my head to the idea that if Adrienne had posted a ton of pictures of Billie going through rehab, we'd have been awfully critical of her thought process there, even if Billie was fine with it. I know, I know, they're doing this as an act of bravery, but that's where my mind is.

Not trying to over-analyze a nose bleed photo but I am  The photo itself is fine, it's just I'm having quite a visceral reaction to it that I didn't expect to have.

I understand what you're saying, but here's the difference. There are plenty of places out there documenting what people with cancer go through, but the people who read those have to seek them out. In this way, they're presenting it to the world of people who may not have any understanding or expectations about what happens and what someone like them is going through. People care about Green Day, so they care about Mike and his family - and to see someone you care about go through a very serious struggle humanizes them and the issues they're dealing with. It's sad and tough to see, but it's real.

With Billie and rehab. I can see your point, but I think we'd look on that differently because from the little we know of these guys based on their social media, they are very different. Billie likes to keep so much of his personal life private. It would be really out of character for him to go from pretty reserved to suddenly be "hey, here's the hell i'm going through with this, I wanted to bring you guys along". Whereas Mike and Brittney both have been pretty open about their lives and their families through Instagram. So now they're facing this struggle, and just as they shared their highs of spending time together with their children, they're sharing the lows of dealing with cancer. I like that they're not treating this like some taboo they should keep out of the public eye.

That makes sense :) Mike and Britt have made themselves very public, so they're just continuing with that. I think I'm just being protective, or that my instinct for myself would be that it's a bad idea, in the same way that Billie doesn't share highs or lows very often (did not post one thing about his vow renewal!) or how Tre was driven to quit instagram because of shittiness. Just don't want to lose Mike due to his own over-saturation with fans.

Wasn't it Adrienne who posted the photo of Billie with the drip in his hand? I personally thought that was inappropriate but that's just me, they can do whatever they want.

I was surprised Deryck posted those pics too. I guess it is just some peoples' way of coping or being positive, and it probably feels good to have messages of support coming in despite the photos being darker than usual.

Both Adrienne and Billie posted it..but he deleted it then...

good point, didn't think about that.

As you said,Billie and Mike are different and Mike's always been so open with the fans about his personal life,so if he and Britt decided to be so open about this things too, well they'll have their good reasons and I respect their choice...

I was a bit upset and really surprised when I saw Mike's picture.

But, on second thought, I think it's a good thing. He always shared a lot with fans. It can also be a way to reassure them (at least for those who don't stop asking how Brittney is doing in the comments), but I had seen there a way to show they are super combative and optimistic ! I've never seen people laugh about the chemo effetcs, but after all, why not ?? This is their way of taking things, and I think it's great.

I think when it comes to dealing with something as big as cancer the phrase "each to their own" sums things up. People deal with it in different ways, whatever feels right/works best for her is what she should do.

the photo isn't supposed to make us feel comfortable, it's cancer. that's the point.

besides, it's one picture of her with a nose bleed. to suddenly jump to conclusions that there's gunna be a bombardment of photos of Brittney in various states of distress is ridiculous. is mike gunna post photos of her recovery? probably. whatever he/she posts, I'm sure they're much better equipped than anyone else to judge what's "appropriate" or not.

I don´t know what to think of it... In a way I don´t buy their attitude at the moment... Maybe it´s just me, but behind their repeated "fuck cancer" and even the picture showing nosebleed and Mike sticking his tongue out, I just have the feeling they are trying to avoid to feel the fear. It´s a picture of a couple that´s trying hard to prove how strong and ready to fight they are (and they obviously are), but who knows... Like children whistling in the dark... There´s something that tells me it´s only half the truth. If it is the truth at all... But, as I said, maybe it´s just me, it´s only my perception. They should treat this stuff in whatever way serves them best. I don´t need to agree or understand. It´s their way. In the end, it´s Britt´s way, and alone her way. Wish she can come into peace with whatever is happening, and doesn´t blow her strength and power in trying to show us how strong she is... Wish them both the very best! And they are doing their very best, I´m pretty sure.

Yeah, 80 had posted the picture of Billie with the IV, although that was before we knew it was addiction related. We just thought he got sick in Italy and was getting better.
