Random Green Day Thoughts

Fuzz

Recommended Posts

My Discover Weekly Playlist on Spotify is so heavily Green Day influenced this week.  The guitar riffs, drums and even specific lyrics are appearing.  Their algorithm is reaching facebookeque heights.

Here is a song that sounds very familiar.  Let yourself Go listen to it....

Interesting. I don't know if polished is the word I would have chosen, but I don't know how else I would describe it. I guess my best guess at a description would be that the way he used to sing had more of a visceral grit to it that really projected from his very soul. It was still smooth and clear, but it had that underlying emotional depth. Now when he sings it's like he's got the technical prowess, but the depth has fallen by the way side. There are very few songs that I can name recently outside of ones like Brutal Love that seem to have as much of that.

I think that's what he meant. That gritty, bratty vibe isn't really in his voice anymore. And while I do like his voice now, I do miss that dirtier edge he had in the early days.

AI and 21CB had that edge to them as well. Even some of the Trilogy stuff did, but those records were the main turning point I think. The most striking contrast to me came with FOAM (obviously).

I know Billie loves The Muffs. The verse melody from State of Shock is taken straight from this song

This is really good!

Worth taking a deep dive. Great pop punk band with power pop melodies. Green Day were majorly inspired by them

I’m giving them a listen. The Muffs are much more like Green Day than any pop punk band claiming to be inspired by them. It’s really cool.

But anyone who likes all the Green Day albums, show some love here!

I do.  I play different ones at different times, in different moods.  I have realised though that I almost never just sit and listen to music, I am always doing something else which influences what I listen to.  No idea how much difference this makes.  With FOAM I don’t think the best tracks were the singles but I have been saying that since 21CBD! I have favourite songs throughout their career so far from (in no order at all) Going To Pasalaqua (which I can never spell), Christie Road, She, Letterbomb, Waiting, 2000 Light Years Away, Church On Sunday, Geek Stink Breath, Panic Song, Longview, Basket Case, Brain Stew/Jaded,  Christian’s Inferno, whatsername, Haushinka etc etc so am always excited for what they will do next. Long may it continue.

I can't ever spell Going to Paslaquaball either.   Like 'the new single', it's quite impossible.

whoa, whoa, whoa, wait.    Haushinka?    I'm going to have to gate-keep you right there, because Haushinka is the WORST Green Day tune ever.    Still pretty great though, so I'll let it slide.

Going to Pasalacqua is listed as explicit on Spotify.

How do we correct this oversight before going to bed tonight?

Haushinka is the reason Warning beats Nimrod.  It's holding that album back from Idiot/Warning levels of greatness.

Without that song, Nimrod just might better than Idiot.

I am pretty sure Good Riddance is listed as explicit too and I have no idea why LOL.

Presumably because he mutters ‘fuck’ after the second failed intro

I somehow never noticed that. I will have to listen again more carefully.

What about Going to Pasalakdhfkeokdkl;asd94298038 though?   I've always heard the F bomb in Good Riddance, but I don't hear one in Going to P-Diddy.

Yeah, I never heard anything in that either.

Also I just want to say the intentional screw-ups at the start of Good Riddance are so cute; I have always loved those. ❤️

Truuuuuuuue! Haushinka is a fucking gem! The harmonies on that song make me melt every time I hear it. The drumming is outstanding too.

For perspective, The Saints are Coming is my favorite Green Day of all time (and it's cover) and Haushinka is my least favorite.

So today there was this guy parked next to me in a pickup truck at McDonald's who looked a lot like Dookie-era Billie LOL. But he seemed like he was kinda acting like an asshole and was texting when he drove out. I didn't approach him LOL.

Oh, and in a separate incident I saw someone with a car like Jimmy's from the JOS video.

It is once again time for me to do "Weird Green Day Math" to determine when the next album will drop.

If they go with their exact average wait between releases, Album 14 will drop May 13th, 2022.     But Green Day are done with the corporate BS, right?  So sooner than that.

Maybe....August of this year?

I dunno.   The Hella Mega Tour is messing with my "math".

I'd absolutely be the happiest person on the planet if they drop an album before Hella Mega and just promote the freaking snot out of it.

What the heck.   Let's say The Hella Mega Emerald Band album drops the first day of the Hella Mega Tour.

It will be Green Day's Sergeant Peppers Club, but even better.   Peppers is somehow simultaneously considered the best AND worst album of all time, I'm not sure how that works.   This one will just be the best, period.

A power popera about Billie Joe battling the evil, corporate Whatshername who is working with a shadowy figure that just might be St. Jimmy, risen from his grave.    The Network show up, but it's unclear whose side they are on.

Mike Dirnt and Tre Cool show up dressed as Ghostbusters and eventually the mystery is solved, the world saved and Pop Punk is no more.   Only Power Pop.

Just when the dust settles and Billie singing an acoustic ditty......

Lady Cobra and some Mystic Knights of the Cobra beam into the middle of town, weapons drawn.......

TO BE CONTINUED.

Devi's Kind has been popping up a lot on my shuffle and I always forget how much it slaps.

To think we had to bully Billie to get him to release it.

Back when he listened to us 😁
