Random Green Day Thoughts

I volunteer in a charity shop and we play music in the shop on an old iPod. Good Riddance has come on shuffle the last couple of times I've been there.

Spoiler

Good Fucking Riddance to 2020 (we're not having the time of our lives)

Probably the worst performance I've seen by the guys.   Still not terrible though.

Let me rephrase.  It's their 'least great' performance.

TRILOGY LIFE FOREVER NOW!

Billie Joe Armstrong is the oldest member of Green Day by about 2 months and 17 days.

Jason Freese has no birthday or age.

I've never been the biggest fan of Ordinary World (the song), it used to be the only song on RevRad I skipped regularly. But it really grew on me recently, because isn't an ordinary world the one thing we all miss and are craving for most in those crazy times right now? It's like the pandemic gave this song a whole new meaning and dimension in my heart. "What would you wish if you saw a shooting star in an ordinary world?" Dammit, Billie😭

I never really liked that song either, but I can definitely feel what you mean here.

Audio isn't great, but this is one killer performance of Whatshername.   Billie nearly loses it at 3:33 and this brings back memories of when the album first came out.   Such a special moment in time.

This is such a great performance of one of my all time fav songs.  If I have a bad day and just need Billie’s voice this is my go to song.  Flawless. ❤️

We don’t talk about that one.

Because it's just too painful for us all that we never got a Country album by the guys.   Don't worry, it WILL happen.

Oh damn, the passion😥 WHY don't they play this song live more often?

I believe it's a bit overwhelming to perform.   Losing a parent is something that stays with you forever, and I couldn't imagine singing a song about it on stage in front of thousands of people.

I think you are right but I think when you are an artist who writes about such personal issues and lays yourself open so often, then you have to have thought through how you will deal with actually performing songs like this.  That’s not to say there will not be days when it’s easier than others, everyone who has lost someone really close knows that it’s odd how some things can blindside you when you least expect it but generally, I think they deal really well with these things and it’s why so many of us fine Billie’s lyrics so relatable, so generally a huge strength.

Re the country album, well we got that with Norah Jones didn’t we?  Having said that, Country is one of my least fav genres but if GD do it, I’ll be there ‘cos it’ll be great.

Oh I love Forevely.  It's more folk than Country, but it does have some elements of Country for sure.   I feel the same way about Country as I do with Pop.  It's not the greatest genre ever, but some artists do it better than others.   They are few and far between, but there are some country and pop tunes that rock my socks off.   There aren't many albums in those genres like that, but that's really difference.   Rock N Roll produces albums, whereas most other genres make collections of potential singles and that's it.   Rock N Roll is overall more sincere in most cases, but again.   There are some that stand out in the Country and Pop worlds.

I don't see Billie ever wanting to do a full blown Country and Western album, but I'm sure that good ole Green Day would find a way to make it timeless.

Update: Good Riddance just came on before we left. It's like my pub is trying to give me a GD gig

It's also a polite way of telling people to GTFO at closing time

Wait a second. We're talking about Whatsername, right? That's not about Billie's dad is it? WMUWSE is about Billie's dad. I'm confused! 😫 Anyway, I agree about Whatsername being an incredible song. It's always been one of my very favorites and I wish they had played it (or will play it) live more.

Yes, but Whatername is still, for me, a very emotional song about love and loss.

I am strung out on confusion, trapped inside a roll of dissolution.

Now GDA will never understand.

What's happening to me.

Yeah, I have no idea what's going on at this point.   Must have got my threads crossed or something.

Wake Me Up When September Ends and Whatshername need to creep back into the set lists.   Replace JOS wit those two now and then and I'd be happy.

Whatshername is the chilling finale to the wild ride that is American Idiot.   Such a great tune,  Arguably one of the best songs off their best record.  It's up there.    Letterbomb is the break up song, but Whatshername is the reaction to an entire lifetime of trouble, pain and lose.  He's not just looking back and wondering about her.   He's thinking about how HE used to be, how things used to be.   How it wasn't the president, or Tunny or Amanda that was the idiot.   It was him all along.      The really interesting thing about it is that it sort of exists OUTSIDE the main narrative.   He survived and moved on.   He's not as broken as he was back during their fling, but now that he's fixed, where is she?   She's taken another path as well and things can never go back to the way they were.   She may not even remember him, the inauthentic drug addict from long ago.   She may not even remember.

He's looking back at his youth and thinking about what could have been.   What will never be.  Life is better, but at the same time sadder.   He keeps walking.

In the exasperations of Tre Cool (or Tunny) - GEESE.   What was that?   Now I gotta go listen to Whatshername at full volume and cry.

There's just something about American Idiot that makes me want to talk about it all day long.

Gotcha. Yes, Whatsername also deals with love and loss, that's true. It's just not specifically about losing a father as WMUWSE is. It seemed like both were being talked about at the same time so that's why I was confused. 😅

I do love JOS, but I would drop it for Whatsername in a heartbeat!  Give me Whatsername, Extraordinary Girl, and Letterbomb and I'll be a happy. I would also love to hear Give Me Novacaine again. :(
