That would've been incredibly arrogant of them.

Most bands do it, I was worried management would force them into it. I didn’t think they’d raise the prices that much either but you know, a good amount.

Yeah, I've never heard anyone other than Billie say it like that.  He says more "ahk-ward" rather than "awk-ward" ("aw" being like the "caw" sound a crow makes).  The first time I heard him say it was in Broadway Idiot when he was quoting Michael Mayer, so I thought maybe that was how Michael said it, and Billie was just using his inflection, but I've noticed Billie do that in other interviews as well.

Really? I never realized he said it in a weird way, does anyone have a link to anything he says awkward in? Lol

nevermind saw the part you were referring to, I didn’t notice anything wrong with the way he says it?? I mean he puts on a valley accent which is probably why it sounds a bit weird to some people

edit: I literally started repeating awkward myself because I had no idea there was anything wrong, I can’t find anything wrong with the way he says awkward, do you mean he says it like AHK-ward like the ah! He makes people do in shows?

I thought I'd noticed that too and remembered it from this clip https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FBl4aJt_Kgo&pbjreload=10 , turns out it was the way he says "most" I thought was more funny :wub: I think I see what you mean though! There was another incident recently but I can't remember which now, possibly the Chicago interview..

There’s something wrong with how he says “most” too?

Come on, he sounds like he's putting on his poshest british accent there for just that word   (which is kind of something I've seen mentioned a few times by haters but never understoof, that he's got a "fake" accent or whatever). Oh and @Kuromignonne you beat me to it, it was indeed that interview

I used to think he’d put on a fake British accent during singing but I don’t hear anything wrong with most, I really don’t. I kinda just always thought Billie spoke with a valley accent all the time.

Well I'm awful with american accents so it never occured to me (and honestly don't need more shit to analyse lol), as for singing it never occured to me as noticeable thing in general. The "most" in that clip is just cute though :D

It must be this indefinable thing in his singing pronunciation that makes me love it so much

What do you think of the rolled "r" in "era" when he sings Waiting (dawning of a new era) ? Each time live he does it, like in the album version, and I believe it's not the only song in which he rolls an r, but I can't think of another song right now

Here's a blatant example (one of my favorite vids by the way ) at 4:35:

Actually I think I know what you’re talking about. At a show I met a British girl and I was curious as to how she spoke, I was wondering how long she had been here cause she had picked up an accent that sounded like a valley accent but maybe she didn’t, maybe that’s just a posh Brit accent like you said, and that’s maybe why billie’s most sounds that way. I don’t even know man I’m just over analyzing everything now. The man talks cute indeed

Oh I love it when he rolls his Rs! It’s a favorite of mine to be honest

I always laugh at the way Billie says "awkward".  It's like he skips the first w.  I don't know if that's a California thing or a Billie thing, but it makes me smile.

I suppose it could be a California thing, my family is from there and we have always pronounced "awkward" without the first W. I'm going to have to pay more attention to how my friends from Texas say it.

Now I keep trying to say "awkward" with the first W and I can't do it.

The debate about Billie's accent is always funny to me, he sound SO Californian that I can never believe it when people say he puts on a English accent, as a Brit, I think "how on earth do people think that"!  I get that he sounds different sometimes when singing but think everyone does.

I think that accent just shares some elements with a southern English accent. Some of the vowels that would usually be different to English when said by an American are the same. Like he doesn't sound English overall but there are little things in there.

Yeah, quite agree.  I like that he uses British words at times too, or I think he dies.  He said "farting around in the studio", I think that's very British usage, only we fart around

I was just noticing the other day how ridiculous the way he pronounces "know" on the last "'cause you know where I'll be found" in When I Come Around is ("kneeeow"). Is that a California thing?

OMG, American people say "awk-ward"? My life is a lie. I thought every American pronounced it without the first W. Literally, every time I've heard an American person say it, they've said "ahk-ward." You learn something new everyday...

I noticed that! Being British myself, that really made me laugh. The best part about it is that it really does song like a posh British accent.

As for the Californian accent sounding British, I agree with that. Something I've noticed is that, when I say words that have the letter T in the middle of the word or at the end of the word, I don't pronounce the Ts. I've heard Billie do this a few times also. The only example I can think of off the top of my head is in Brain Stew, when he says "I'm coun-in' sheep but runnin' out." I've noticed that Mark Hoppus and Gwen Stefani (who are also from California) do this too.

Yeah if I was doing my bad American accent that's what I'd do , I can't really imagine an American saying "awwkward" the same as an English person. I guess there's smaller differences that are easier to pick up if you're American yourself though.

Yes that's it! And missing the 'h' off the beginning of words like he's a Cockney lol ("I 'ope you had the time of your life"). And and some 'o' sounds are quite English. Those are the things that stand out as similar.

Ahh yes, I've noticed those things too but not really put the pieces of the puzzle together, the fake accent thing does make a bit more sense now so thanks for that

Cockney Billie though lmao  :sherlock::wub:

That's the exact moment when I became a fan. (In case someone hasn't heard the story yet :P). For that reason 21CB and especially this part have a special place in my heart.
