Really? I never realized he said it in a weird way, does anyone have a link to anything he says awkward in? Lol nevermind saw the part you were referring to, I didn’t notice anything wrong with the way he says it?? I mean he puts on a valley accent which is probably why it sounds a bit weird to some people edit: I literally started repeating awkward myself because I had no idea there was anything wrong, I can’t find anything wrong with the way he says awkward, do you mean he says it like AHK-ward like the ah! Oh and @Kuromignonne you beat me to it, it was indeed that interview

The "most" in that clip is just cute though Actually I think I know what you’re talking about. At a show I met a British girl and I was curious as to how she spoke, I was wondering how long she had been here cause she had picked up an accent that sounded like a valley accent but maybe she didn’t, maybe that’s just a posh Brit accent like you said, and that’s maybe why billie’s most sounds that way. I don’t even know man I’m just over analyzing everything now. I don't know if that's a California thing or a Billie thing, but it makes me smile. I suppose it could be a California thing, my family is from there and we have always pronounced "awkward" without the first W. I'm going to have to pay more attention to how my friends from Texas say it. Now I keep trying to say "awkward" with the first W and I can't do it.

Yeah, I think it would be a valley girl type pronunciation. That's exactly what one of my friends called it when I texted her about how she says it. I was asking everyone around me how they say it, and everyone says "awk-ward" as opposed to Billie's "ahk-ward" and had also never heard anyone said it "ahk-ward". Gotta be a regional thing, like the cot/caught merger, which I've also noticed Billie does (and would affect the same sounds as ahk-ward/awk-ward). So weird I've never heard anyone (like actors/actresses who are from other regions) say it that way, just Billie. Then again, he's also the first one I noticed do the cot/caught merger. 1 hour ago, herewegoagain said: I thought I'd noticed that too and remembered it from this clip https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FBl4aJt_Kgo&pbjreload=10 , turns out it was the way he says "most" I thought was more funny I think I see what you mean though! jengd
The debate about Billie's accent is always funny to me, he sound SO Californian that I can never believe it when people say he puts on a English accent, as a Brit, I think "how on earth do people think that"! I get that he sounds different sometimes when singing but think everyone does. 1

Some of the vowels that would usually be different to English when said by an American are the same. Like he doesn't sound English overall but there are little things in there.
jengd
Yeah, quite agree. I like that he uses British words at times too, or I think he dies. He said "farting around in the studio", I think that's very British usage, only we fart around
Hermione
I was just noticing the other day how ridiculous the way he pronounces "know" on the last "'cause you know where I'll be found" in When I Come Around is ("kneeeow"). Is that a California thing?
pouty bitch
OMG, American people say "awk-ward"? My life is a lie. I thought every American pronounced it without the first W. Literally, every time I've heard an American person say it, they've said "ahk-ward." You learn something new everyday... 15 hours ago, herewegoagain said: Come on, he sounds like he's putting on his poshest british accent there for just that word I noticed that! Being British myself, that really made me laugh. The best part about it is that it really does song like a posh British accent. As for the Californian accent sounding British, I agree with that. Something I've noticed is that, when I say words that have the letter T in the middle of the word or at the end of the word, I don't pronounce the Ts. I've heard Billie do this a few times also. The only example I can think of off the top of my head is in Brain Stew, when he says "I'm coun-in' sheep but runnin' out." I've noticed that Mark Hoppus and Gwen Stefani (who are also from California) do this too.

Yeah if I was doing my bad American accent that's what I'd do , I can't really imagine an American saying "awwkward" the same as an English person. I guess there's smaller differences that are easier to pick up if you're American yourself though. Yes that's it! And missing the 'h' off the beginning of words like he's a Cockney lol ("I 'ope you had the time of your life"). And and some 'o' sounds are quite English. Those are the things that stand out as similar. 2

Popular Post pouty bitch
The "dream, America, dream" part of 21st Century Breakdown is so beautiful. Beerjeezus
That's the exact moment when I became a fan. (In case someone hasn't heard the story yet ). It's such a clever video, the fact that it's animated, but then it changes to live action at the most perfect part of the song. That close-up of Billie, with the eyeliner retreating back into his eye. Then, when it zooms out, and you see Mike and Tre too, and they're all playing on the roof infront of the sun, and then it zooms back onto Billie as the song ends - it's just so magical. That video, especially the ending, is completely flawless. 5
