Random Green Day Thoughts

Had a dentist appointment this morning.  Cleaning was done by a very heavy handed dental assistant who was blasting a 90s boy band station the whole time.  All I was thinking was, the guy in the Geek Stink Breath video had it easy compared to this.

This made me laugh at first then made me super sad that you had to go through that! :(  Ugh to non-stop boy band music!  Next time tell him (her??!!) that your ears are only accepting GOOD music (Green Day, of course!)

I think if she'd heard or seen negative things about the band she should have mentioned them in the article, because as it is the title doesn't make sense. There's no indication of what she's "defending".

Yeah that's what I was trying to say! :P

The problem that I have with articles like the one that @gaslight13 posted is that they suggest that Green Day is a band that is hated by most music critics and music fans out there. But this is bullshit. Most people acknowledge that they are a very talented band and almost everyone I know likes their music.

Hmm, I think it depends on the country/area, my general feeling is that Green Day are not enough known for all the stuff they've done (people generally stop either at Dookie or AI era), and especially the great stuff they've been doing for the past year, for people to fully appreciate them, whether there are random people or someone in the music. I do bet that people who get into them end up liking/loving them, but people who don't (for instance, in France punk rock is hardly mainstream) don't always receive and give a very fair feedback, while these people are mostly ignorant about the band.

I actually think that article was very positive. In the US, GD is widely thought of as a "teenager" type band. Even though there really are millions of people of all ages that are fans, most people that are not assume, only kids like them.

I actually thought it was a very good article.

In France, it's the same and there are surely even less fans. I haven't met any fan around me, only saw them at the concerts I've been to. Even though people in their thirties or in their forties know the band's name, they're surprised to learn the boys are still around, and plus doing so well. But for someone who precisely hasn't heard of them for a certain time, reading an article with that title might seem weird... although I do agree the article's content is not all bad, and that it's absolutely not mischievous towards the band. I still find something ambivalent about it in its whole.

However, I find it great that you have a different feeling about it, hopefully people reading it while they don't yet know about the band or haven't followed them in some time will only get a positive feeling out of it.

I definitely agree with you, but my experience has been a little different. Some people have rolled their eyes and such if they see me wearing a GD shirt, but I don't think I would call them a band that everyone hates. If anything, I think they're a band that people love to pick on and pick apart with the whole punk/not punk thing, which who even cares about that? All that should matter is whether or not the music is good, which it is!

Well, I think that happens to every band with a certain amount of popularity (except the Foo Fighters who are seen as the saviors of rock music). Look at Linkin Park for instance. Or Blink 182. You are either a sellout or overrated or outdated or whatever. The more popular you are, the easier it gets to criticize you. And I know that there are people who don't like Green Day. But I think that their overall public image is a very positive one.

It's true that many people don't know their latest record. American Idiot and 21st Century Breakdown as well as Dookie were probably their most succesful records here in Germany, also in terms of airplay. But the band can still easily play every big festival over here. So I don't think that everyone thinks that they retired or something. The thing is that rock music isn't at it's peak right now. But Green Day is certainly still a big player in the rock industry.

Did somebody on here say that they have one more album left to fulfill their current contract with Warners? If that’s true I wonder if they are anxious to get that last album out quicker so they can start shopping around for a new deal (with a new manager behind them negotiating). Do you think they would consider a change to a label that might pay more attention to its rock bands?

Yes, I think it's true.

They might want a change. I wouldn't say it's impossible - they've been with warner for many years and I suppose they signing them payed off but I'm sure they will get other offers.

I was thinking that I shouldn't insult a person with a sharp instrument in my mouth, but at one point couldn't help blurting out, "I don't know which is more painful, this music or what you're doing to me".

I'm not sure that it's the record companies "fault" that rock is not that popular these days, I struggle to find rock on the radio, there are fewer and fewer "rock" stations every year so it would appear that we, as rock fans, are in the minority these days.  Warners seem to have been pretty good about letting Green Day do what they want so would be reluctant to see them move to another label which tried to influence them to do stuff they don't want to do.

Agreed on all counts.  Even if you look at music awards shows- how many rock/ punk acts do you see?  Most are rap, hip-hop,  or pop acts.  They rarely even announce the winners in the rock category on air.

My thoughts on the Warners label?  If they are planning on fufilling their contract and bolting, would it be possible that they are just cutting ties and going back to recording on their own label (Otis)?  I think it's feasable that they could forgo any major label and just producing and getting the music they want out their on their own terms.

No it’s not the fault of the record companies at all, but we have been complaining about the lack of promotion on this tour, the upkeep of the web site and youtube channel, the release of material, etc. and that would be the record company. Not saying another label would do any better if rock is a poor investment right now, and I agree they need to be somewhere they have artistic freedom, but even looking around can be good for negotiations.

As far as going independent, I’d rather not see that happen. I think it’s too difficult for a band of this scale and they wouldn’t want the added pressure that comes from having to do a lot of things themselves. They tried that for a bit acting as their own managers and it was a failure. Even crappy promotion is better than hawking your own wares on the internet like teenagers.

I never know where the line is between the management and the record company and who is responsible for promotion etc, and maybe it varies with some bands being more hands on than others, but I agree with @pacejunkie punk, I think it would be impossible for a band of this stature to become independent and I don't think they would want to, after all, they know how that worked for them last time.  Maybe with new management they will want a complete fresh start once the contract with Warners is up, but it appears to me that Warners is one of the biggest so not sure what they would benefit by a move.  We also are assuming that the band themselves aren't perfectly happy where they are right now, just because we would like them to have a higher profile, they may feel perfectly comfortable with their current level of success/celebrity.

I don't think that the lack of promotion, especially the lack of live material / streams during the festival season, has something to do with the label. Other Warner artists release live footage and streams of their festival gigs. So it seems like it's a band/management decision - for whatever reason. And why it hasn't improved since they changed their management remains a mystery.

Honestly 90's boy band music blasting at the dentist sounds amazing to me . But shame about the heavy handed part :P

I remember after the rock hall induction I was worried green day would raise the prices for their shows but I was thinking the other night that they really didn’t. I’m grateful.

I always laugh at the way Billie says "awkward".  It's like he skips the first w.  I don't know if that's a California thing or a Billie thing, but it makes me smile.

Actually, I say it the same way he does, because I've mostly heard it from him. But I often mess up writing the word, always a w missing somewhere

Do you actually pronounce the first w? I say it as (h)awk-ward and I never considered any other option. Is it like...wrong?

That was my thought too, haha. Does anyone pronounce that first w? I'm from the opposite coast as Billie but don't pronounce the w.

Yeah, I've never heard anyone other than Billie say it like that.  He says more "ahk-ward" rather than "awk-ward" ("aw" being like the "caw" sound a crow makes).  The first time I heard him say it was in Broadway Idiot when he was quoting Michael Mayer, so I thought maybe that was how Michael said it, and Billie was just using his inflection, but I've noticed Billie do that in other interviews as well.

That would've been incredibly arrogant of them.
