I think domestic violence/abusive relationships is a topic that doesn't come up very often in music. Also, I find that people usually assume that the man is abusing the woman in an abusive relationship (maybe not as much now as they did back then however), so I like that fact that it's written from the point of view of a man who is suffering. I really hope the song raised awareness of men suffering from domestic violence at the time. Also, I read that Billie was inspired to write the song after Mike fell and broke his elbows during a pillow fight with his girlfriend. If that's true, then Billie really is an amazing songwriter. To take a simple accident like that, and build on it, to turn it into a serious topic for a song is such a clever idea. Also, the fact that Billie has never suffered in an abusive relationship (as far as I know of) yet he sings those words with so much emotion and vulnerability - it's just mind-blowing. When I first listened to Dookie, Pulling Teeth wasn't one of my favourites (I was more drawn into songs like Burnout, Longview, Coming Clean etc.), but I feel it stood out more than other songs, like Sassafras Roots or In The End, and I don't really know why. I was listening to it the other day, and it still wasn't one of my favourites. However, I've literally just grown to love it overnight. When people talk about Dookie, they rarely mention Pulling Teeth and I think it's so underrated. It was written by Mike i think or I am wrong.... jengd
I've always thought Billie is an awesome songwriter, not afraid to think about and tackle different subjects and love his use of language, he uses vocabulary to like few others and plays with words. I also like his mix of what appear to be, quite literal songs, storyteller songs, biographical and autobiographical songs, political, serenades, and I think he's very good at capturing current issues and feelings.

I was amazed when I first heard the line "is the cop or am I the one that's really dangerous?" From Warning knowing it was years before that became a major headline issue. Who was even talking about that in mainstream culture in 2000?

It's funny how he can take songs with subjects like that and make them so catchy. Blood,Sex and Booze is another. They're so singable. It's one of my favourites and yeah as well as what @G-L-O-R-I-A said about it I love how the dark/disturbing lyrics are contrasted with a totally catchy poppy melody and sweet harmonies that sound like something from the 60's. A rare song highlighting the serious issue of female on male domestic violence sung with emotion and also a great example of their dark/ironic humour. There's so much going on with it and it's very unusual and unique, the type of GD song I like best. Also since Pulling Teeth has been mentioned I'll take the opportunity to post this

Popular Post CherryBombs&Gasoline
I just listened to Nimrod and realized what a great album it is. So many great songs on this one. Most of them deserve way more attention than they get. The singles are quite popular but songs like Worry Rock, The Grouch, Uptight or Scattered should be in the spotlight as well. Nimrod rules!

Nimrod is my favourite album of all time. I actually love every single song (except for maybe Last Ride In). There's so much variety. It's a great album.
herewegoagain
Yaaaas, Nimrod love I love the whole album but the A side in particular is so strong as a sequence. Although I can contain my excitement for Last Ride In, but will give them credit for the curveball.
kkpojpojpj
Nimrod was my #1 album for many years, but now AI has that spot instead. Scattered will always be my all time favourite song by any band, and I was so lucky to see it live in January after 13 years of it being my favourite. Redundant and Worry Rock are amazing as well!
Worryrockk
This is so random and I'm gonna sound crazy but like two months ago I started listening to church on Sunday all the time again and I noticed that for the lyrics of it, it says "leaving traces of my mistakes" on literally everything, lyric websites, YouTube videos, etc. But Billie says PLACES. the thing is I always rememberd him saying traces, I guess same with everyone else. Even though he doesn't... Mandela effect??? MAYBEEE
herewegoagain
I fucking love Uno so much but the countdown at the end of Nuclear Family ruins an otherwise perfect song Edited July 8, 2017 by herewegoagain Song typo
Christian's Inferno!
I think Nimrod is a bit overrated. I mean, it wasn't as successful as AI or Dookie but I hear just as many fans praising Nimrod as they do for AI or Dookie and I'm not sure why. I don't see Nimrod as any better than most other GD albums. 18 minutes ago, herewegoagain said: I fucking love Uno so much but the countdown at the end of Stay the Night ruins an otherwise perfect song Nuclear Family is the song that has the countdown, not Stay the Night 11 hours ago, Worryrockk said: This is so random and I'm gonna sound crazy but like two months ago I started listening to church on Sunday all the time again and I noticed that for the lyrics of it, it says "leaving traces of my mistakes" on literally everything, lyric websites, YouTube videos, etc. But Billie says PLACES. the thing is I always rememberd him saying traces, I guess same with everyone else. Popular Post Hermione
There's just something special about Nimrod to me, that slightly surfy/retro vibe going on and so many diverse songs with great lyrics. Dookie and AI are great but they're more, like, focused on one thing. I like it best when GD are quirky and have variety so Nimrod is perfect for me. And aww I love the Nuclear Family countdown, it's amusing

It's a recurring theme on the whole record imo that the songs feel just a little too long or drawn out, so that isn't helping.

The countdown seemed to be thrown in for future use as a sing along but it never got to really work because they ended up not playing it very often (if I remember correctly). I actually like it, though. It sounds pretty cool but I agree it could be shorter.
pacejunkie punk
I like it because it fits with the words -- a countdown to a detonation.
IcyMoffatt
It will be my friend's birthday in a few days. I wanted to buy Revolution Radio for her because she wants the album and she always asked me to bring mine when we meet. I went to the music store to buy it and asked a guy to help me to find it because the shelf was empty. His computer says there are 2 copies available, but it seems the music store lost them. We were unable to find the cds. Gift card instead...

Guest ~Basket Case~
Glad to be finally home after last evenings cancelled flight from Florida. bouncingoffthewallbja
Nearly two weeks too late with this thought, but here goes! I've always loved practically everything about Letterbomb and always thought of it as one of the "undiscovered" gems on American Idiot. I honestly didn't think I could adore it more, but after hearing it in Dublin, I have a new appreciation for the song, which is surprising because y'know, I thought it was such a flawless song to begin with and nothing could make it better! Billie's Trump-bashing and speech in the middle also complimented it wonderfully
