Random Green Day Thoughts

I feel like I don't notice the backdrop when I'm at the show. I'm sure having something decent looking there enhances the experience but it's mostly subconscious as I'm too busy staring at the band, so I'm not too bothered what it is. All I care about is the catwalk, I'd be happy for them to cut back as much as necessary on lights, screens, pyro etc if it meant they could have that.

Do you really think they will bring back pyro? I enjoyed the screens with the old pictures - they were cool - Im hoping the GREEN DAY light sign is thrown away.

No sorry if I worded my last post wrong, I was saying that I DON'T think there will be pyro. And yeah that light sign was a bit obnoxious but I really did enjoy the lighting work that they did during the last tour and I really hope they do that again, along with a catwalk

A small catwalk would be nice. A bigger one not so much as you would have to watch Billie from the back when you don't manage to get a spot at the barrier in front of the catwalk.

After a while I rewatched the 21CB era music videos and I'm still very impressed by the Marc Webb's work, I think that choosing him it's been a very good move from the band/Warner.
Do you guys have any idea/preference about who should direct the next music video? I'm not well informed about the most productive or acclaimed directors nowdays, any name that you think could match with band (despite the fact that we know nothing about the new record's sound and style)?

I know a very good video director personally, but he lives and works in Germany. He'd probably do a great Job tho. Very arty and unique.

I asked my friend who works for Peavey and he's a fan of Ace Norton who made this great Video for Deathcab for Cutie in 2007. He was even nominated for a grammy.

Yeah, I agree. A catwalk would be awesome. I think he's always used it only occasinally, didn't stand there the whole time. staring at his ass could get boring after a while for most people.

I never really cared about the catwalk, I was always standing in the front but most of the time i decided wrong and had Mike in front of me. Not that I would complain, but you know... xD  The Catwalk always caused me neck problems, whenever Billie would use it xD

The thing I like about the catwalk is it in effect doubles the length of the front row. Plus wherever you are if you happen to not have the greatest view of Billie you get more chances to get a good view when he uses it. I guess if you're front and centre it can be a drawback for him to move from there :P but overall it's a view improver, as long as he's not on it too much of the time.

I particularly liked it at Wembley Stadium because I was a few rows back half way between the stage and the catwalk so I might be biased because of that, it meant great views all night from that position.

Hmm I find Waiting, 21 Guns and LOTAG quite average. But 21st Century Breakdown might be their best video so I'd be willing for Marc Webb to have another go just based on that. Most of all I don't want Sam Bayer again, he's done some good videos for them but when they're bad they're really bad. Might be more interesting for them to go with a totally new director.

Edit: Oh and I really like the Stray Heart video, certainly the best from the trilogy. I see it's directed by someone called Roboshobo, I'd be pleased if they used them again.

still trying to figure out if insomniac or nimrod is my most favourite one. and wondering if there is a chance the new album will come and slay them all and be my favourite GD album from the first day?I have some high expectations for the new album.

I loved the style of the 21st Century Breakdown video, it was really well done. Very artistic, creative, and complimented the song well.  I hope they stick with something like that, or something with humor like Holiday or Walking Contradiction.

Sam Bayer, no! Oh Love was just so bad, I don't want him near another GD video.

But Sam Bayer also directed all the videos from AI as well as BIAB.  He also directed some iconic videos such as Smells Like Teen Spirit and Doll Parts.

I am probably one of the only people that didn't mind Oh Love.  But even if you say he had a miscue with that one, he has had alot more successes than failures.

You're right, I really liked the AI videos. it just scares me that Oh Love and Kill the DJ  are his more recent GD videos. I just hope those videos are not indicative of a direction he would want to take with GD. If I knew the videos were going to be like the AI, then I would be very excited to see him doing them again.

Sam Bayers videos for GD are a bit hit and miss. Like @GenXIdiot said if the videos are like the AI videos they would be OK, but I don't want another video like Oh Love. Some of the best videos are the earlier ones like Basketcase, When I come around, and nice guys finish last- are the directors who did those videos still available?

I don't mind the videos to Oh Love or Kill the DJ.  I think the fit the theme of the songs fairly well.  They are by no means my favorites, but I don't think they show a decline in Sam Bayers directing abilities.

I agree I like some of the older ones the best, that capture the humor of the group. I watch a lot of music videos because of my job. I look up videos of songs for high schoolers to learn on the piano. Basically they write their requests down, and I research them for appropriateness, and arrange the best ones for the class. Well a lot of videos are so serious now, and kind of boring. I still laugh at the "Walking Contradiction" and "Holiday" and "Warning" videos. I hope they do something funny.

I know it's just opinion but Oh Love and Kill the DJ seemed so flat to me. I really like both of those songs. Both of those songs have nuances that didn't come through in the videos.

Basket Case was directed by Mark Kohr.  HE also directed Time of Your Life, Hitchin A Ride, WICA, amongst others.  He did an excellent job with those videos, they were very cute.

I had no problem with Sam Bayers directions of Oh Love and Kill the DJ.  They are much darker songs than any of the songs that Mark Kohr directed.  I find Sam Bayers direction more mature and they used him at a time when they were trying to appear more mature, to change their image.  Sam Bayer helped them do that with the AI videos.

They were clearly going for a much darker theme with the OH Love and Kill the DJ videos.  That is why they chose Sam Bayer.  The right director will depend on the direction of the new album.  They may want to go back to a funnier themed video or they may want the video to be on the more serious side.

Personally, I don't care who the director is as long as it fits the theme of the song properly.

I think the Oh Love and Kill the DJ videos are ok, but nothing special and they could've been executed better. The main issue I have with Sam Bayer is the cringeworthy JOS and WMUWSE videos, awful awful awful. I do like the other AI videos, and they were just right for the album and the band at that time. But overall I'm not a big fan of the direction he takes Green Day in, it's too poser-ish.

Probably It's because I literally grew up with those music videos and they're part of my teenage memories, but I can't say a negative word about JOS or WMUWSE. But yes, maybe mine it's not an objective point of view :D
At the same time I agree with your previous post, I think some fresh ideas could work better than a Bayer's return.

What about an animated video? There's an animated video for Nuclear Family- a competition winner made it.

I've just watched the video for 21st Century Breakdown and it fits the song perfectly. The animated video for Nuclear Family isn't anywhere near as good as the 21st Century Breakdown video.

I agree with a lot of what has been said. I want Green Day to go back to doing conceptual music videos (e.g. the 21CB music video; I thought that the artistic side of it was gorgeous) as opposed to just clips of the band jamming, even though I love those too.

The animated Nuclear Family music video, if I remember correctly, wasn't done by a pro hired by the band. I think it won a music video contest that GD held, or something like that. Wasn't the winning artist's name Kyle Smith? I remember reading that somewhere.
