I think it was spelled Billy on Green Day's first EP . He probably doesn't care much, it's an unusual spelling and there's even a joke about his mum spelling it wrong on the birth certificate "because she was on drugs" in the 39/Smooth booklet. Never heard any indication that he's bothered by it. Like 99% of men called Billy spell it with a y so I think it's understandable that people will assume it's that way.

21st Century Breakdown live is so fucking nice. Especially the part starting around 2:20 into 3:05 in the below video. I fucking love it.

Unfortunately, you can't expect anyone to spell your name correctly if it's weird. Speaking from personal experience, there are people who have personally known me for years and can't spell or pronounce my name.

7 covers that I want to hear Green Day do:

Silent Lucidity (Green Day + symphonic rock = WIN for me)

Bohemian Rhapsody (for reals. But only if they do it well)

Holy Smoke (it seems so GD-ish to me that it's hard to believe that it's a Maiden track)

Achilles Last Stand or Whole Lotta Love (it'd be funny to hear Billie attempt the extensive moaning section in the middle)

Painkiller  (I doubt that they could pull off Glenn Tipton's guitar solo (the first one) well but they have always surprised me with their abilities each time that I've doubted them)

Knocking At Your Back Door (I know that GD loves dirty jokes and this song is basically a somewhat sophisticated, extended double entendre)

Eat Me Alive (it would be fucking hilarious; it was #3 on the PMRC's "Filthy Fifteen" for questionable sexual content, and we all know that GD loves stuff that angers the establishment. Plus, Billie's okay with singing about men)

 

That being said, I'd pay good money for Iron Maiden to cover KFAD in concert, replete with feather boas.

Yeah! It's the best song for starting a show, the perfect way to gradually get the crowd pumped up with the anticipation during the intro building up to the "bastards of 1969" bit. Wish they'd bring it back.

Interesting selection! I'd love for them to tackle Bohemian Rhapsody . Last time I saw them live it was one of the songs played before the show started and the whole crowd sang it from start to finish, even just that was a lot of fun. Them actually covering it could be great and hilarious.

I would personally like them to cover any Beatles song, or preferably do a Beatles cover album. Billie's voice is perfect for it.

Could someone please explain to me where is the love for Westbound Sign coming from? For me it's one of the most bland songs on Insomniac.

It is a poor copy of Dookie without the originality.  They tried too hard to say "fuck you"  When you  try too hard it doesn't work.  My opinion.  Dookie worked because they weren't trying to be anything, they were themselves.  With Insomniac they were trying to be bad asses.  I still remember how utterly disappointed I was when Insomniac came out, I almost gave up my fandom.  I held on for Nimrod and was happy I did.  Nimrod felt real again.

I disagree because I don't think it's at all a copy of Dookie, they were definitely going for a harder sound and that's what they got.

Rationally thinking, I have to agree with Judi's points except I don't think it sounds like they were trying to hard. However, I like it too much to care. I love how punk and angry it is and it's the album I could relate to when I was 13. It's what I'm going to reminisce about when I'm old.

Insomniac is my least favorite, too, but it's mainly Billie Joe's singing, or the mix of it that I don't like. There are a couple great songs on it, though. Stuart and the Ave. is just great, 86, and Armatage Shanks. But it's still not as great an album as their other stuff. I even like the Trilogy better, tbh

Thanks, I don't feel so alone anymore.  

But I am not fond of armatage Shanks or 86, but I do like Stuart and the Ave (the opening bass riff is great!), Geek STink Breath, Panic Song and Walking Contradiction

Yes I love Walking contradiction and Geek Stink Breath. 

The video for Walking contradiction is my favorite Green Day video, ever, btw. It just captures them so well, their sense of humor and sense of individuality.  I hope there's something like that for the new album. It seems like videos nowadays are all so serious.

I wish that GD would finish the covers that they tease the audience with at concerts. I've watched a lot of 21CB-era concert clips and Billie usually just plays a few seconds of each. I LOVE the way that he sings Highway to Hell; I want to hear more! They only usually play the introduction of Iron Man, and then there's how Billie likes to hint at the chops that he has that are not displayed by GD songs. He's played small bits on Master of Puppets before and tapped for Eruption, so he's obviously at least a competent guitarist, unlike what GD critics like to insinuate. I want them to at least finish some of the live covers, just to prove to some of the keyboard warriors that he can.

It isn't the most interesting musically but I think it's cool because it's this real/realistic long distance love story, not sugar coated at all and just telling the honest story of Adrienne moving to be with Billie. I also like how in that way it's like a sequel to 2000 Light Years Away, even including the line "2000 miles away-ay" sung in the same style as an amusing reference to it. And I kind of enjoy how it's sung in such a punky/mumbled way that before I opened the booklet and read the lyrics I couldn't make out any of what he was saying until he got to "...westbound sign" . Those are the things that make it stand out to me, I find several other songs on the album more bland (86, Tight Wad Hill, No Pride).

I don't think Insomniac is like Dookie at all. It's a product of where they were at that time, they were dealing with the pressures of their new found fame and of starting families and had been rejected by their old community, they were pissed off and wanted to prove they could make some basic, angry punk music. When the whole album is relentlessly that from start to finish then if that's not what you're into it's not going to be your favourite, kind of a love it or hate it thing I suppose.

I would also like to hear them do a full cover of one of those songs, but I think the reason they tease with just a bit of them is because they originally only did it to take the piss out of the fact that Brain Stew has a slight metal sound. In older performances it's more obvious, they're like "this is our metal song!" and playfully mock themselves for having written it with a snippet of a metal cover, and I guess that even though they're not as sarcastic about everything now it carried over. Maybe they still feel like it would be pretentious or silly for them to play metal and show off guitar skills seriously and it stops them? But I hope not, now that they've expanded their musical range and will do more things in a serious/unsarcastic way I don't see why they couldn't do it, could even still make it a bit tongue in cheek doing it before Brain Stew if they wanted.
