Beerjeezus
Not a fan of the lyrics on this record, but an album I rarely see praised for its lyrics is Insomniac.Rarely? Might be that nobody understands a word he sings I'd say many people value Insomniac's lyrics. I do and it's the Green Day album I listen to in full the most often. (I rarely do so but when I pick up some Green Day it's usually Insomniac or 21CB.)
Chin for a Day
Not a fan of the lyrics on this record, but an album I rarely see praised for its lyrics is Insomniac.I agree with Jane. The issue with Insomniac is that you can't understand a single word he says. You have to look up the lyrics to appreciate them. Most casual fans will not go to the trouble to do that, thus the under appreciation of the lyrics. Whereas on 21CB, you can understand what he is singing and it includes some spectacular lyrics.

Incomprensible =/= less meaningfulWhile I agree that it is a ltitle hard to understand what he's saying, that does not mean that Insomniac's lyrics are automatically devalued. However, reading those lyrics is pure joy, as their author would say. I do appreciate them in the same way as literature and that's why I'm glad I had to look them up - because it taught me to read and study lyrics more thoroughly and enjoy them like poetry.

What I did say was that you have to put in more of an effort to understand and appreciate the lyrics. Me, being the psycho fan that I am, knows that Billie's strong point is his lyrics thus I looked up the lyrics to Insomniac. I agree that there are some fabulous lyrics, but the casual fan will not make the effort to look them up. That is why I believe the lyrics are under appreciated on Insomniac. Most people do not understand them. And actually now that I think about it, the lyrics being incomprehensible does take away from them. I shouldn't have to look up lyrics to appreciate them, I should be able to understand them while they are being sung. This is probably the main reason Insomniac is one of my least favorite GD albums. I like it, just not as much as others. Edited September 7, 2015 by JJ1964

Dookie, Nimrod and Warning had the best lyrics and song structure. Also simple but catchy melodies.

I don't mind it's difficult to understand because it makes it sound even more angry which suits the music and atmosphere they were going for. Also simple but catchy melodies.I enjoy the complexity of the lyrics. I think he is tackling some complex themes, such as religion and war and I think the lyrics fit. Warning is one of my favorites if not my favorite, so I agree with you there. Pretty please with a cherry on top?If you add sprinkles I might bend Interesting that you say so. It does take away from them for a casual listener but I see a part of that album's charm in it. I can understand your theory, but for me, personally, it doesn't work. I like to understand the lyrics. I can't understand the anger if I don't know that he is angry. Also simple but catchy melodies. Not that I disagree, Nimrod lyrics are brilliant and I appreciate them a lot but I do enjoy the different approach and complexity. Even if the result isn't perfect I enjoy the attempt. I can understand your theory, but for me, personally, it doesn't work. I like to understand the lyrics. I can't understand the anger if I don't know that he is angry. He's so angry he can't enounciate!

That's a characteristic of punk music, actually - sloppy but effective playing, slurred vocals, incomprehensible lyrics, etc. The lyrics are too complex if you ask me. Why would that be bad? I think it showcases Billie Joe's maturity and progression as a lyricist. Billie Joe delivers a lot of great, clever metaphor on Insomniac and I think the lyrics do the album justice.
