Random Green Day Thoughts

Do you guys know if Billie was like always interested in soccer? As far as I recall 5-10 years ago he didn't upload any single photo depicting soccer. I know he's been into american football, but soccer? Is it his new sport interest?

It seemed to start after the Raiders left Oakland. He became a supporter and then fan investor in the Oakland Roots and Soul teams. Then when his son moved to the UK and he started spending a lot of time there he became a major soccer fan.

He used to coach soccer for his kids when they were young too

That’s not uncommon in the states because so many kids play soccer but it doesn’t necessarily translate to being an adult fan of the sport when there’s American football. Take away your football team and you may turn to soccer.

This year was a great one in Green Day land. So thankful for the great memories 2024 gave me and the two awesome opportunities I had to see them live. Pittsburgh in particular was one of my favorite shows of theirs I’ve been to — so fun, so joyful —and I feel fortunate to have been able to take that trip to see them. Can’t wait for what 2025 has in store. Happy New Year, friends!

Happy New Year! Sorry we didn’t get to meet up in Pittsburgh

Good luck!

It went pretty well, thank you for your luck hahah. I am an addict in many ways and I performed it for a group of addicts.  I just love the song and see how much it is about addiction, so if felt very meaningful.

I introduced myself as a bit of a Green Day freak.

I was just listening to The Death Of Randy Fittzsimmons by The Hives and it made me want to listen to Father Of All Motherfuckers, so I guess today is a rare FOAM day!

Seeing the proshot for Target Field being leaked makes me feel like this year might be better than last year for the live side of GD (pls I just want footage of Bottom Of the Hill 98 2nd set and all of Bottom Of the Hill 99)

I'm hesitant to share this elsewhere as it would outrage a lot of folks.   I've been listening to bands that Jillie Bow has mentioned and he has a taste that really is as good as the music he makes.   But I've finally come to a band that I don't like.  Maybe there's a reason Billie only name drops one album from these guys and it's......Van Halen.   Man, I'm going through their catalogue and just about every single thing about it is terrible.   Am I insane?   Also, I'm dreading the Pretenders albums.   They seem like they might be terrible as well.

On a more positive note, the other bands Billie talks about are good.  Gray Matter, Seven League Boots, Discord, 10,000 Maniacs, Poison Ideas, Motely Crue and Teenage Fanclub.

I used to like Van Halen and the Pretenders but not sure their music holds up so well these days. Not listened to either in years.

Van Halen* does, for me at least. I heard Panama on the radio the other day and it still gets my blood pumping even after all these times listening to it. The energy and the bravado got captured on record perfectly. Those boys knew exactly how good they were and when the red light was on they knew how to bring it.

*VH of course does not count any Sammy Hagar stuff. That’s another band entirely.

I mean, everything is a matter of taste but they’re not exactly an intellectual band. It’s all feel. Of course it’s been said to death but Eddie was a virtuoso extraordinaire and that never fails to impress me. DLR was the frontman of ‘80s rock, dynamic to no end. A little goofy at times but take yourself too seriously and you end up being preachy like U2 on a bad day. There’s always like half the songs I could take or leave on any given album but when they hit, they hit hard. They could rock, natch, but even songs like Dance The Night Away and Little Guitars are sweet and betray a hidden softness that makes for an interesting dynamic. I think you’re selling them way short.

Edit: Ahhh, I just can’t stop: Michael Anthony’s prowess on harmonies while also keeping an anchor steady bass at all times reminds me of a certain Dirnt-y someone. See stuff like Jamie’s Cryin’, Unchained, and Where Have All The Good Times Gone! to hear what I’m talking about.

Okay, I’m done. Promise.

I wonder if GD just has a list of songs that they practice just to pull out/tease/jam/soundcheck live?

My partner will be in Cape Town next week, including on the night Green Day is playing there. In the end I decided not to tag along, the main reason being that I felt guilty about leaving our cat alone again (will with a sitter, but it's not the same thing, she's used to us being around 24/7), after having been away for 2 weeks last month. Which I think is the maximum evidence of how much I love this freaking cat. But a couple of days ago some of his colleagues that will also be there were chatting about their plans to go to the Green Day concert and oh boy, the FOMO is much too real. I offered my partner to buy him the ticket as a present so he can go with his colleagues, and he was not interested in my offer at all, so I won't even have someone on the inside live whatsapping me each song they sing  and every joke and funny moment on stage. 😅

That's strong of you not to tag along. I'm not sure if I could've resisted

If you wanna come and stay for a week in my apartment and take good care of my cat, I could still go

Trust me, even without a Green Day concert, missing out on a trip to South Africa is enough to give me FOMO. Add to that Green Day and... ugh.... the urge is strong.

Wow, that’s impressive! I can really relate to your FOMO. I hope your cat realizes how much you love her. But well, cats….😉 We are catless at the moment, but if everything goes as expected, two will move in here at the end of January. Exciting! It’s easier to leave two at home when you want to go on holiday. But it always gnaws at my conscience nevertheless.

Oh believe me, this week I have been telling her once a day that I'm missing out on a Green Day concert because of her, and if she understands that means I love her so much. I can confirm she gives zero fucks  And I also think I'd feel less guilty leaving her alone if we had another cat, but with the space we currently have, we cannot get a second cat. Someday, hopefully.

And glad to hear you are welcoming two cats soon!! How old are they? and do you have names for them already?

They are two and three years old. They come from a rescue shelter and their names are Penny and Mia. Last October our Luna died, we had her for 16 years. I thought we could go without a cat for a longer time but obviously they are addictive…

I'm so sorry about Luna passing 😢 I wish our animal companions could live as long as we do. But I'm sure Penny and Mia will be happy (for cat standards at least  ) to be welcomed into a loving and safe home.

Thank you!😊 And yes, we are really looking forward to having them.

But our daughter just had an interesting thought: if we had gotten two male cats, we could have called them Billie and Joe!😂
