The Trilogy is massively underrated

Great:

Nuclear Family -- Great opening track. Classic Green Day with a more mature vibe

Stay the Night -- Classic Green Day sound

Let Yourself Go -- Fast-paced and dirty. Could have been better with a stronger guitar sound

Oh Love -- A bit slow, but great vocals and guitar

See You Tonight -- Not really a song, but a cool intro

Stop When the Red Lights Flash -- Garagey Green Day sound

Lazy Bones -- Great song, but could benefit from better guitars and less tambourine

Wild One -- Great song, but could be cut down a bit

Stray Heart -- Very catchy

Wow Thats Loud -- A love the jam session ending. Catchy overall

Amy -- Like a garage lullaby

Brutal Love

Missing You

8th Ave Serenade

X-Kid

Dirty Rotten Bastards

Decent:

Carpie Diem

Kill the DJ

Rusty James

Fuck Time

Makeout Party

Baby Eyes

Nightlife

Lady Cobra

Walk Away

Amanda

99 Revolutions

Sex Drugs Violence

Bad

Fell for You -- Catchy chorus, but otherwise filler

Troublemaker -- Cool lyrics, but very repetitive and annoying "heys"

Loss of Control -- Filler

Angel Blue -- Filler

Sweet 16 -- Filler

Ashley -- Filler

Drama Queen

A Little Boy Named Train -- Just no

The Forgotten -- Bad

Troublemaker has the worst lyrics ever.

doesn't sound like Green Day at all.

People always say this, and it is funny, because it is Green Day playing and they have not always had a static sound...

I agree with the OP about the under-ratedness of the trilogy. Because of the stuff with Billie, they didn't get as much promo as they should have, and I'm not saying the new fans would be coming in droves, but I do think that having a large group of people newly in love with the current era would have made a difference. Apart from that, the majority of the fanbase is pretty critical of the trilogy. I think the hype of the triple album gave people potentially unrealistic expectations. On top of that, the band was clearly experimenting with their sound. The fact that "dookiefied" versions exist (and from what I have heard, they're good, but they're not "better" than the straight album tracks) shows me that people want the "same old" Green Day when it has been proven time after time that that is never going to happen.

My thoughts in this are all over the place, but I do know that after having sat away from the albums for awhile (due to just not listening to much music) and then listening to them all over again I thoroughly enjoyed them. Billie has never been the most clear lyricist and the music is not always the most singularly original sound, but put together, the music and the lyrics are like magic to me. These albums will never compare to other albums, but I have never really been able to compare apples and oranges. I like both fruits for completely different reasons.

I think some fans are stuck in the past though. Dookie, Kerplunk, insomniac. All brilliant albums, but they were kids, that was them at that point in time and they should be damn proud of it. But Green Day are Men now, they should evolve (which they're good at) and be moving forward.

Aw shucks  . I've been busy knitting. Among other things.

Right, exactly. Which is funny because in many ways the trilogy IS a blast from Green Day's past. I remember hearing some of the trilogy songs before the albums came out, and thinking "What year is it?" because they strongly reminded me of 90s Green Day. But they can't duplicate old songs; they brought a new element to their old sound and I appreciate that. I never fell immediately in love with the new stuff, and I think in part it is because I just didn't know where I was with them, and I had no idea what to expect from them musically. But I have grown to appreciate a lot of the music. I liked it at first but I mean now it is a staple in my mind, and fits perfectly well right along the rest of their catalog.

I love the trilogy but better than American Idiot?! C'mon!

Not at all, American Idiot is legendary.

I wouldn't say it's better than American Idiot, but I do think it's unloved for the wrong reasons. No, it's not their best work, but it's fun and it was ambitious. There are some great songs on the albums along with some that are just okay and that's fine. They tried some new things and maybe not all of them worked, but I don't think anyone would've been happier if they made an album that sounded like their last one or American Idiot. At least they were willing to change things up.

I think that the trilogy is amazing. It doesn't have the greatest of American Idiot but the sound is better. American Idiot has the "time" factor, it couldn't exist a perfect time to the album be brough up. And it will be very hard (on my opinion) for Green Day (or even if it was any other band) to overcome something like that. I listen all day the trilogy, at first I didn't liked very much, but with the pass of the days I end up realizing that the sound gets better each album. I don't know how to explain but for me, with the years, the sound of Green Day gets more harmonic and it's more enjoyable for the ears.
My apologies for the english.

Reasons, why WORLDWIDE hated Triology, is the best the've made so far...

1) They're bringing the awesome guitar solo's back.

2). Tre's playing some awesome drums

3). it was a back to root album ( THIS WAS THE LINE, WHICH PEOPLE TOOK WRONG)

4). it's really good that guitars are kept low, it could be enjoyed in long car trips. ( Especially - Stop when the red light flashes )

5). Mike did the awesome job of writing some awesome bass lines.

6.) and it's worth imagining that, what these three albums could have done, if the sound was same as DEMOLICIOUS..

I like all of the trilogy songs except SWTRLF, Troublemaker, The Forgotten, Nightlife, Lady Cobra, and Amy So thats 31/37 so i like the trilogy quite a lot. Its still the three worst GD albums but i still like them and dont think they're horrible albums, just the least good ones :P

I listen to the Trilogy more than I do 21CB.

I think AI is better overall but, again, I find myself putting on whole Trilogy albums before I consider AI.

Having said that last point, I generally skip more tracks when listening to a Trilogy album.

Some of Mike's and Tre's playing across the three albums is amazing.

Some of Billie's lyrics are haphazard but most make me smile. I do not like the lyrics to Drama Queen however - :ermm:

Songs I listen to the most: Nuclear Family, Stay the Night, Carpe Diem, Angel Blue, SWTRLF, Stray Heart, X-Kid, SD&V, Walk Away, Dirty Rotten Bastards.

Lady Cobra/Nightlife - I enjoy these because they are SO different. Failed experiment to many I guess, but I doubt we'll be getting a full albums worth one day...

In summary:

UNO - most consistent, probably the strongest overall.

DOS - contains too much 'filler', most of which isn't even exciting in a 'but its GD' sense

TRE - 'musically' enjoyable, but I really only listen to half the songs these days.

I think perhaps the Trilogy could've been condensed into one and half album's worth of solid, consistent tunes (maybe two as half a CD would prove troublesome to play).

The only songs I don't like off the Trilogy are Nightlife and Ashley - everything else is perfectly fine by me. Perhaps not the best, but still good enough (though I had to listen to some a few times before I liked them - mainly thinking Kill the DJ).

I just really like nightlife cause it would seem like a really good song to have sex too..

ALSO stay the night is like one of my favourite Green Day songs and I love playing the intro on guitar but the trilogy could in a way be overrated in the sense of it being hated by like 90% of us here

How can something be overrated if 90% of people hate it? Not that that's not a huge exaggeration, but theoretically speaking.

This thread. This thread is the first one I see when I'm advised to go to other places on GDC besides unpopular opinions.

The trilogy CAN NOT be Green Day's best work. Forget opinions. It lacks what Green Day is at their core. Harmonies and bass lines with clever/relatable lyricism. At no point during the trilogy can I hear Billie joe's signature snarl through that god awful vocal filter. At no point are the guitars strong enough to wake a baby. At no point can I hear those beautiful an subtle harmonies between Mike and Billie. At very few points do I hear Billie's signature lyrical wit.

The trilogy does not represent Green Day.

Agreed; to say the albums were underwhelming would be a massive understatement.

Ego and arrogance usually lead a band to believe their own hype and feel they have a trio of album in them; much as we love GD, come on, a trilogy?? They're a pop-punk act, who went more political and epic in the last decade and had success with it. But they are not diverse enough to put out a trilogy of albums where quality would keep up with quantity.

The three are supposedly different genres, but save for a few touches; and differing tempos, it is more or less the same album three times.

Yes, everyone has opinions, and for those who find quality in this I say great; for me it's folly, and worst of all - bland. A boring journey with barely enough truly quality tracks to make one album, let alone three.
