WhiteTim
"I’d rather say it is very much staged and intended for an audience, since they often address the camera when they talk."That's an actual quote from this ridiculous excuse for an article. Yeah...they spoke to the camera so "IT'S" all "STAGED". Like what the fuck does that even mean? Does this person not know the difference between a documentary and a movie?! Reality TV junkie gone bad ? Yeah clearly they "got it perfectly" ? the documentary is non sense he's right there's no real insight to it... Hermione
Regardless of your opinion of the film to say it was "staged" based on the fact they occasionally addressed the camera is ridiculous. Also... Review: Green Day Documentary ‘Heart Like a Hand Grenade’ Is Nonsensehttp://www.alternativenation.net/review-green-day-documentary-heart-like-a-hand-grenade-is-nonsense/ "Since it is a complex album that tells a story as well as being a political statement, I was excited to hear Green Day’s thoughts behind that. I wanted to hear the background story,"Can anyone honestly say this? The band has done this 10 million times already, if you google it there's endless interviews, documentaries and articles containing Green Day's thoughts on the album and the background story. What there isn't a lot of is simply footage of them behind the scenes in an informal setting, or actually there in the studio making the music - which is what you get here for a change. I can't really see the reason to complain about a lack of something that there's already massive, exhaustive amounts of.

Green Day released an excellent making of (Cautro) their most subpar albums and released the worse making of for their best album

But he was there to film the recording of it, not the coming up with the idea and writing of it, and the band has already talked endlessly about every aspect of the album/songs/concept etc, so I can't see much reason to complain about a lack of that. They started out with Billie saying he wanted an iconic symbol for the album cover. Then they went right to it being completed. We did not receive any insight into how they came up with the heart like a hand grenade symbol or what exactly it means.

Chin for a Day
It's from the lyrics of She's A Rebel.Of course I know that. I was referring to the fact that they skipped over that in the film. I was pointing out how they could have taken us through the process of how they came up with it and they didn't. True, although that info is available if you're interested, a good summing up of it here on Wikipedia:https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/American_Idiot#ArtworkIt might technically be a flaw that the film didn't delve into things like that but from a fan perspective it's all already out there. If you want to know pretty much anything about the album you can already find out because the band have already talked about it so much. So I don't think having one documentary that just shows us glimpses of the band hanging out and making music rather than explaining everything is much of a problem, I don't need to hear the same explanations again. I'm not stupid. I was simply pointing out that I thought it was a flaw in the film. You are comning from the assumption that only hard core fans like us are watching it and would know everything anyway. I was going to watch this with my hubby and he would not know this. So coming from someone that is not a hard core fan it does not give all the information they might want to see. I was simply pointing out that it is a flaw the film.I am really freakin' sorry for bothering everyone today.

I know it doesn't give all the information about the album that someone who isn't a hardcore fan would want to see, I'm just saying that from the point of view of fans/anyone who's interested enough in the band to have looked up a couple of AI era interviews or documentaries etc (for example all of us in this thread) I don't see that as a problem. As far as broad appeal yes it's flawed, but for fans I don't think the lack of that stuff matters too much.
Hero_Of_The_Hour
This was actually the scene that best displays my biggest critique about the film. They started out with Billie saying he wanted an iconic symbol for the album cover. Then they went right to it being completed. We did not receive any insight into how they came up with the heart like a hand grenade symbol or what exactly it means. Did you miss the part where they met with a team who were tasked with producing the art for the album? John was there to film the recording of the record. He wasn't there to shadow the art department while they brainstormed and ultimately decided upon the cover etc for the album. He can't film what he wasn't present to witness. He was there to film Green Day RECORD the album for which the lyrics were already written and by the looks of the "interview" they gave to Jane Wiedlin they had zero interest in discussing the meaning behind the songs even when directly asked about them. If any of you recall interviews around this time the band members were supposedly having issues with Billie not sharing lyrics with them before bringing them to the studio but Billie said he was afraid to share his lyrics with the others. There seems to have been a lot going on within the band chemistry etc so to complain that John didn't manage to get a detailed breakdown about the construction and meaning of each song (during the recording process I add) is stupid imo. Also having watched Cuatro I fail to see the detailed explanation of what the fuck any of those genius songs were about...unless you consider naming one album the party one and one "oh God reality". Hermione
I was just reading the Q&A John did on Green Day's facebook page yesterday, no huge revelations but he does mention wishing it could've been longer and that more cool bits of footage could've been included, and that there's a six hour cut of it he'd like to release "one day". He said about there being no extras on the DVD, but added "fingers crossed" for a deluxe edition at some point.
