Hermione
What was in the hour and 20 minutes-ish cut from the 2009 version?I'd be interested to know this as well. I know he had like 300 hours of footage so I guess even more than that could've been cut out and replaced? I'm hoping for someone who saw the original (and has a good memory ) to give a comparison. Jack [DF]
If this version is any indication of how the longer original was, I pity anyone who sat through it. John Roecker's cinematography is gobshite, plain and simple. It's honest to god like he's never held a camera before. In what could have been a moving, emotional scene that has BJ playing When It's Time acoustically, the camera zooms as far in as possible and pans across his stubbly facial hair. Overall, I was less disappointed than unimpressed. It really seems like some average "rock documentary", except made by some self-righteous (read: pretentious) punk scenester. Tre's antics were always pretty funny, and Mike and Billie seem like pretty pleasant, jovial folk. But the majority of it was just music - I didn't pay for a ticket to see live footage I could find on Youtube, nor did I pay to hear an album I own. As others have mentioned, the occasional glimpses into the actual writing-rehearsal-recording process are few and far between, and the insight into their personal lives felt more voyeuristic than anything. captain peroxide
What was in the hour and 20 minutes-ish cut from the 2009 version?Holy shit, that much was cut? If it was behind-the-scenes, in the studio type footage, I will cry. I'd rather that have stayed in there than all the live stuff. I just didn't feel like there was anything special about that first show with the new material, particularly as you barely saw any crowd reactions at all. It was the same show we got that whole tour. Which is a great show, but we've seen it already.
JardyOfSuburbia
Forgot to mention this, but when the movie ended they must have had the DVD player on a loop because as soon as it ended it started playing again. It was funny. We were all thinking it was something crazy after the credits, but it wasn't. That was the only thing I was disappointed in.

Not in depth showing or explaining the process of making the songs/album anyway. I seem to remember that was commented on. Which makes me think maybe it was more of the weird/Roecker-added stuff cut (for example someone already mentioned it didn't have the clips of his "Jesus of Suburbia" short film that were in it before). Heather.
Yeah, this was disappointing, and I wasn't expecting much. I think the VH1 40-minute snippet we had seen was basically just as good as this. I really enjoyed all the talking stuff, but the live parts are all basically already on youtube and nothing all that special, as has been said. Also, if you're gonna show me live footage, then don't dub it with the studio recording of the song... which was done for some/most songs. I also enjoyed Billie making fun of fans, and his general sense of humor in the studio. But this is a film where you learn almost nothing about the band or the album for which it is named. That was the only thing I was disappointed in.That was very funny because no one around me knew what was going on. We all waited through the credits to see if there was anything special, but the movie just started again. I did like during the 'Thank you' part how he thanked all of the people that waited 11 years for it to come out. It was a great experience but I was way over hyped about it and I was kind of disappointed about it. However, it was funny and I liked that about it.Also, no clue if this was mentioned or not but is the version of 'When It's Time' on the musical sound track the one recored for AI or re-recorded from 2010 when the rest of the sound track was made? unextraordinarygirl
I watched it again today and laughed at Billie because he was in full dork mode in this movie. So funny. Forgot to add that I would've liked to see more of the in studio footage of them recording the songs. That's what I was expecting to see. But overall it was good. Fuzz
Any source that an hour and 20 minutes was cut from the original screening? I haven't watched it yet, but from the reactions so far, it sounds similar enough to what we saw back in 2009.

Didn't feel like 3 hours to me... more like 2 or so.There was some stuff cut out, but all the Green Day stuff that I remembered stayed intact. Only that terrible acting stuff got cut
Heather.
I think the reason this film disappoints is because it fails to understand its audience. Cuatro and Broadway Idiot could be shown to a non-Green Day fan audience and be understood, which is why they were successfully screened at festivals, but fans of all "levels" still enjoyed them. HLAHG is obviously FOR the hardcore fans, because I tried watching it with someone else who was a moderate fan, and if you don't already know the backstory, you're not gonna learn it very well from this film, or appreciate it. So if the key viewer demographic was people like US, the GDC type crowd, then there was no need to intersperse the familiar live portions because that's not the kind of things fans like us need. At least when Cuatro did that, it was mostly new footage from rare secret shows. I'm grateful that this finally came out and I enjoyed certain parts of it, but it did miss an opportunity like that article said.
Hero_Of_The_Hour
What you all really mean is this film failed to understand it's audience...what they really wanted to see was Billie's dick not Tre's dick. Duh.
Todd
I enjoyed the film, but I don't like how it was presented. All of the songs were already there. It barely showed the writing process, didn't show any outtake pieces besides When It's Time, nothing about the B-sides, nothing was different in the demos. I also don't like how each song took footage from various practice sessions and live performances. I'd rather each song only use footage from one source, and use the audio from that source as well. Mixing the sources makes the media pretty useless for me. At least When It's Time was complete! That JOS dance was also weird as fuck
Jon Benjamin
I do love how there's a demo up to the end of the first chorus of Extraordinary Girl. Any source that an hour and 20 minutes was cut from the original screening? I haven't watched it yet, but from the reactions so far, it sounds similar enough to what we saw back in 2009. I read that the original was 3 hours long and this one was an hour 40, weren't you there though in 2009?
