Am I naive in thinking it could at least partially be because John Roecker is a friend and he wants the film that he toiled over out? I doubt it's going to make them a ton of money, letting their friend put his film out while not doing them any harm and giving them a bit of money and promotion doesn't seem like such a bad thing to me. It's an artistic independent film, not some slapped together cash in of already seen footage or something.

I'm not saying the film itself is a cash grab, it was obviously a labor of love for John. I'm just... confused why it took this long.

I mean that maybe putting it out is also at least partly for the "good" reason of letting him put it out. I'm not sure why it's taken this long but I know he's re-cut the whole thing so maybe whoever's in charge of giving it the green light wasn't happy with it originally? Or there were other Green Day priorities that they didn't want it to interfere with but now there's nothing going on so it's ok? I'd be interested to know, I guess it's not that likely we'll find out though.

I honestly think John and GD didn't see eye to eye on the project and he had very little support from producers/the band/the record label and then he probably just didn't bother pursuing it because he thought it wouldn't work out, and then maybe eventually he's like "Well I should put this out" and then they saw a marketing opportunity after 10 year anniversary (which passed because they also couldn't get their shit together).

Who knows.

The band just made $1.8 million for a gig they never actually played and a few weeks ago on their facebook were flogging a sleeveless shirt and hat combo with the American Idiot logo on it for $50 (to the disgust of most fans who commented it must be said) and then there was the $100 trash can with shirts so I guess they are indeed happy to grab any money that comes their way these days. It's all about merch etc. That said John mentioned over a year ago that there were legit reasons why the movie had not come out before now and he personally was determined to get it released as it was a labour of love and something he was proud of also so it's not a cash grab on his part I'm fairly certain.

So the press release mentioned that one of the Theater shows GD played when the album was released will be included in the movie. I was at the Toronto and NYC shows. I think the other two were L.A. and Chicago? Does anyone know what show will be featured in HLAHG?

Thanks. I figured they were gonna use one of the four AI shows where they played the album in it's entirety. I remember the two I saw being right around the time of the albums release. The setlist you posted is much better that what they played at the 2 shows I saw even though it was cool to see them in such small venues. I'm pretty sure they filmed the NYC and Toronto shows since I remember seeing signs about "filming in progress"

I'm pretty sure all four shows had almost identical setlists. This is Toronto at the Phoenix on 9/24/04.

I'll definitely be going to the showing at the Downer Theatre in Milwaukee with my mom! If there are any other GDC members going to that particular showing, either hit me up or tell me so.

Right now, on the Fandango website under the Heart Like A Hand Grenade showings, it says Fandango ticketing not available. Does anybody have any idea when you'll first be able to purchase tickets for the event?

Okay, just checked Fandango again and there is ONE Philadelphia theater screening it: the Ritz Five on Walnut Street. And like velvetgrass said, it says "Fandango ticketing not available." But when it does and you all get your tickets, how about a GDC mini-meetup?? I'd love to get to meet some of my GDC peers in person!! (apart from Lauren who I already met at the 2009 Spectrum show :P)

i live like 2.5 hrs from Philly. maybe i can get my sister to come with me.

Unless I hear it from Green Day or Roecker themselves, maybe we'll never know WHY SO FUCKING LONG it took this movie to be released. I really don't care about that, all I want is some confirmation that there will be a dvd of it :runaround: I remember the only time people ever saw was in some kind of theater premiere? That's what I don't really get. Well see... it's not even October yet :P

That's the one I will be attending.

What sites are you looking on?  I fandango'd the entire city and looked at the one theater someone mentioned and I can't find anything about it.

Also, not all shows are available on Fandango.  It might show on Fandango, but that doesn't mean you buy the tickets through there.

Alot of people have questioned why this is being released now, is it even relevant anymore?  I just saw an advertisement for another rock based documentary being released now, Meatloaf, In and Out of Hell.  That is really good timing because Heart Like a Handgrenade doesn't seem so irrelevant anymore.

the only thing that's ever interested me about Meatloaf is how did they come up with that name.

First batch of U.S. theaters announced for my film Heart Like a Hand Grenade. I will be at the Hollywood Arc Light Showing with a Q and A and I am giving away relics from the film. John Roecker says that #HeartLikeAHandGrenade UK showings are coming & so is a DVD release by the end of 2015.
