I am a recent fan, so to say. I have heard some of their latest work, but I don't feel like I truly know them as artists through their earlier stuff. if you have a song you would like to suggest (preferably old) you are welcome to post it here

In addition, the track list for Int'l Superhits will lay down the basics regarding Green Day in the 90's

If you REALLY want to get to know them as musicians, you should listen to everything! Start with 1039/Smoothed out slappy hours (their first full legnth studio album) and don't stop until you're all the way through Tre. It's a big undertaking of course, but it's fun and you can really hear them growing and evolving with each album.

I'd start with American Idiot. It's the most "accessible" of their albums in terms of having a mainstream sound. Move into the 90's stuff from there. Dookie is straight pop-punk, Insomniac is harder, almost metal in places and Nimrod is more experimental. From there, just kind of explore and see what you like.

Have fun!

sorry but insomniac has nothing like metal on it (except for Brain Stew).. it is absolutely raw punk rock

the one recommendation i have, listen to Dookie through to AI first, then give 1039/Kerplunk! a go. they are NOT albums, as a new fan, you want to listen to first. i don't give a damn what people say, they are not the albums you use to introduce people with. they are good albums, but are not good at displaying Green Days talent and skill because of the god awful recording quality. listen to them last.

straight up pop punk Dookie - Burnout, Having A Blast, Longview, Basket Case, She, When I Come Around, Coming Clean, In The End.

dark punk rock Insomniac - Armatage Shanks, Stuck With Me, No Pride, Brain Stew.

"experimental" Nimrod - Hitchin' A Ride, Scattered, All The Time, Worry Rock, Good Riddance, Prosthetic Head.

punk rock Warning - Warning, Blood Sex & Booze, Fashion Victim, Castaway, Deadbeat Holiday, Waiting, Macys Day Parade.

collection of b-sides Shenanigans - Desensitized, Don't Wanna Fall In Love, Don't Wanna Be On TV, Haha You're Dead.

political rock opera American Idiot - American Idiot, Jesus of Suburbia, Holiday, Boulevard of Broken Dreams, St Jimmy, Give Me Novacaine, Letterbomb, Wake Me Up When September Ends, Homecoming.

story teller 21st Century Breakdown - 21st Century Breakdown, Know Your Enemy, East Jesus Nowhere, Peacemaker, Last of the American Girls, Horseshoes and Handgrenades, The Static Age, 21 Guns.

I've never considered Insomniac metal, and the closest Green Day has come to that is Take Back. Really, it's just dirtier guitars and drums added to darker lyrical content

I think you should listen to all the albums from start to finish, really. It's worth it. Especially the rock operas (AI and 21st CB), so you can understand the storylines. And watch Bullet In A Bible and the Woodstock '94 concert.

But anyway, here are some of my favorite songs: Road To Acceptance and 16 (1039/SOSH); Who Wrote Holden Caulfield? and Dominated Love Slave (Kerplunk); Having A Blast and Longview (Dookie); Stuck With Me and Panic Song (Insomniac); Prosthetic Head and Walking Alone (Nimrod); Waiting and Jackass (Warning); Ha Ha You're Dead and Rotting (Shenanigans); Jesus Of Suburbia and Whatsername (American Idiot); American Eulogy and Murder City (21st Century Breakdown).

i too suggest to start with american idiot and international superhits... then go back through their entire discography!!

my favourite old albums are dookie and 1039 smoothed out slappy hours... nimrod comes straight after... their only album i didn't listen to is insomniac (except no pride... great song)

Don't forget to check out all their side projects too. They're just as awesome!

It's far too rare that we get a genuinely new fan on here asking these kind of questions. It's good. If you want to explore the range of this band's talent's, start off with Warning which is their first real experimental album (more experimental than Nimrod) and parts of their latest Trilogy (Nightlife and Brital Love particularly) as these are all quite "out there".

Other than that, International Superhits is a collection of their singles from the 1990s (plus a coupe of new songs) so that might be worth listening to as well as the "big hitters" like American Idiot and Dookie. I agree, leave their first two albums 'til last. The quality of the music is no less than the other albums, but the low level of production might put you off.
