I took it as him meaning the basic story will still be the same but the execution will be different

Yeah years ago when the original idea of a film came out it clear it was going to be a film version of the musical. But it seems like it's different now so I'm not sure.

IDK, it's cool but I'd rather see something that focuses more on the emotion and less on the shock-value.

Maybe still similar content but they just show it more explicitly? I could see drug use/sex etc being more explicit on screen than on stage.

I hope not. I'm not religious and didn't feel a tad offended by that fanart but it's a cheap way to provoke. So yeah, you're right.

Exactly, I'm not Christian but I was kind of offended on behalf of Christians because, exactly, it just feels like you're trying to offend people without much of a purpose when you do stuff like that (kind of like, if you know that drawing the Prophet Muhammad is offensive, why are you intentionally doing it?).  I wouldn't mind more graphic sex/drugs, so hopefully that's what he means.  But even with that, there's no reason to make it gratuitous. I'm not trying to see a porno here. Tell the story.

Right, although if Michael Mayer is involved in any significant way, then it obviously has to be the musical's storyline.

I mean it could be both. Could include shocking etc stuff but for legitimate artistic reasons/not in a gratuitous way. Also didn't Billie like to kind of talk up how risque the musical was in places even though it really wasn't bad? And he's done the same describing Green Day songs before as well (talking about Christian's Inferno as if it's this totally shocking song that wouldn't be suitable for his kids to hear springs to mind). I think he tends to exaggerate how shocking things are a bit . But I like the idea of it being as adult/explicit as it needs be rather than something toned down anyway.

Hello, starting this topic up again. I'm new to the forum as the AMA performance recently rekindled my Green Day passion. I am so curious about this project (AI HBO movie). My questions are: 1) When do you think they'll film it? 2) Do you think Billie at 45 years old will be able to pull off playing St Jimmy?  I'd like to hear opinions.

Oh, he'll pull it off! They are good at making actors look younger and he's pretty good at that on his own so, I don't think it will be too tough. Might not start filming till next year, or in between legs of the tour probably. Then it'll be a while after that till we finally see it.

I agree that if anyone can pull off looking young, it's Billie Joe. He's got the eternally young body and face. There's a tour break in the spring so maybe filming will start then. If not then it won't be until the fall of 2017. I hope he's asked about it in interviews so we don't have to guess.

When i first heard it was going to be made into a movie i was worried because i thought it would ruin the album. But now that i know billie is gonna be jimmy, I'm excited.

It isn't a theatrical release at all, it is an HBO movie, so TV only.  However, that is not a bad thing, HBO does some amazing movie work

Well, as far as I'm aware, there isn't an American Idiot movie. And this thread was made in 2013, while now it's 2018, so.....I highly doubt this movie is happening.

This is pure speculation, but Odinary World was a financial disaster, and only made about $65,000 from Blue Ray and DVD sales.

The delay could be because they are worried that Billie as an actor doesn’t generate the interest that he does as a musician. 

Again, just a pure guess.
