Punkfreak1414
What was it recorded with? Both guitars and amps. And how could I achieve or close to getting the sound of the guitars in "stay the night" , "loss of control", "oh love" and "x kid" with a 100 watt Line 6 Spider 2? (Combo amp)
strmxhonda
It wouldnt be possible with that set up. The amp ive seen most often on the trilogy videos, (Cuatro, and the live club gigs) is the vintage Silvertone 1484 head with a 2x12 Marshall Cabinet. Probably loaded with Celestion v30's. Another amp that really sounds like the intro of x-kid, is the vox AC30's. Those amps, and guitars along the lines of the big Gretsch he plays, or maybe an ES335 will give ya that "jangly" sound they have in this album. Its just loud as hell tube amps, and old guitars. Theres nothin better. Hope this helps!
Clean Cut Asshole
They recorded the guitars with guitars.
Punkfreak1414
I was also wondering is there even really distortion on the amps for the trilogy? It sounds clean but it isn't if that makes any sense. And side tracking but what song do you think from the trilogy has the most distortion on the guitars? JackInABox86
It sounds clean because they used tube amps so as they crank the clean channel you get a slight over-drive or distortion effect which sounds sweet as fuck, and is one of the reasons many people say tube amps are better than solid state
strmxhonda
There is distortion. When you turn a tube amp up very high, even on a "clean" channel. it will start to distort. Alot of amps back then only had ONE channel, compared to the 4 you have on yours. They kept the amp up very high, and used the guitars volume knob to roll off gain for when they wanted clean. Its a "Natural" distortion. The guitars in the intro of 99 revolutions, and some of the lead is about the most gain ive heard on the album. lol They didnt use NEAR as much distortion on the guitars like they usually do. JackInABox86
In reply to your actual question, the best you could get with your set up is to turn your distortion to about 1 or 2 on the distortion channel, or you could buy an overdrive pedal and stick that on the clean channel. OR If you're hardcore just strum fucking hard lol
LPbilliejr
He uses two old modded Marshall Plexi heads (one with Dookie mod the other with the SE Lead Mod) and basically any EL34 powered Marshall will do the job to get close to that sound. The guitars were vintage Les Paul Juniors, some using Seymour Duncan Antiquity pups, and a Gibson ES-137 with P90s...YEA
Jimmy Strummer
After doing a little reading, I learned that most, if not all, of the rhythm guitar tracks were done with a '56 Gibson Les Paul Junior (played by Billie) and a '59 Gibson Les Paul Special (played by Jason), each played through identical custom 50-watt amp heads that were plugged into (I assume) Marshall cabs. Other guitars used on the Trilogy were a Gretsch Brian Setzer Hot Rod, a '59 Les Paul, a '65 Gretsch Double Anniversary, some Danelectros, another Les Paul, and a 60's Harmony Rocket. Other amps used were a hand-wired Vox AC30 half-stack, a Divided By 13 amp, and a 70's Marshall. It's highly improbable that you'll be able to use your Line 6 Spider II to emulate some of these tones. Sanity Loan
They recorded the guitars with guitars. Don't forget the microphones
Jimmy Strummer
Don't forget the microphones That's right!! If my research is correct, they miked the amps up with AKG 414s and sent each of them to separate Neve 1073 preamps, which were then plugged into a modified Neve 8068 console and recorded to Pro Tools 10. green day is
We have a Q&A thread and also a million others on their set up. Put your Line 6 to b8 m5 t10 distortion6 for some of their lighter distorted stuff (AI, JoS, Some of Dookie), crank the distortion to 10 for heavier stuff (Geek Stink Breath, Christian's Inferno) and play around with the distortion and the mids and bass to get your trilogy sound. That's all I can tell you with your setup and in the future please remember our search function.
JOE THE X-KID
I have a 30 watt line 6 and it's really hard to achieve a trilogy tone. You can get pretty decent clean tones from it but nothing like the trilogy obviously because they're extremely expensive tube amps used.
Misterglasshalfempty
Like everyone have said already, you need a tube amp to get that tone. Personally, I think you should use an overdrive pedal instead of driving the amp itself. Some amps sound good like this, but others will sound quite thin and fuzzy when driven. Also, an overdrive pedal allows you to play at a lower volume. If you can't afford a tube amp, you should still consider trying a good overdrive pedal (not distortion) and use it with your current amp. It's not the same, but maybe you can get close. JOE THE X-KID
Possibly try a blues driver pedal, really awesome pedals and I believe Billie used them on the solos for more kick

JackInABox86
Or buy a Blackstar HT1R and have all the tube prettyness you like
SEAtacticsFTW
You can get the clean tone with that amp, but not the exact sound. AC15's and AC30's with any guitar can give you that sound really. If you have a Gibson SG or a Les Paul you can do it.
