Spike Posted February 23, 2014 Share Posted February 23, 2014 You're supposed to 'stop when the red lights (traffic lights) flash' (not that traffic lights flash) coz it's the law, but by saying DON'T stop when the red lights flash, he's telling you to go all crazy and be reckless, in line with the theme of dos. And yes, I did just pull that out of my arse! I just had a mental image of Billie as a driving instructor, and the student slows down to stop for a red light but Billie goes "LET'S... GO... This from GSB sums it up pretty well: "Watching Disney movies will change you. A tune like Misery sounds like it could have come straight out of Aladdin." - Billie Joe Armstrong. In Misery the author is proving his point by using examples - he describes several situations with different people whose actions and decisions led them to the state of misery. This is an ode to consequences that shows what can happen when you do something that you know is wrong. And when it's too late to change anything, all you can do is "get high when you're low", but this obviously won't make you happier. So, instead of regretting your mistakes and drowning your sorrow in intoxication, why not think of what you're doing before you make your mistakes? "It's not what you make, it's what you leave". I could be way off here, but I've always believed Julianna to be the personification of a concept. Not a concrete character, if you will. Kind of like Christian and Gloria. And obviously homicide is murder, so the phrase Julianna homicide could refer to the intentional destruction of a concept. I went in the ditch once—came within inches of hitting a sign, and hurt my foot trying to brake. Drove right back out and picked up my dad, and no one ever knew. Juliana Homicide is a personification of blazing self-destruction, and characterizing it as a girl he wants shows the seduction of that sort of self-sabotage and the flirtation with it (whether to fall into it or not). "California’s burning to the ground And Julianna walks on holy ground" - To me these lines represent how a crazy destructive bender and allowing the loss of control can appear so glamorous and draw us in at the time. And when you act crazy like that, at the time you feel indestructible. You don't look around at all the damage caused, the fire, you are immortal. Until you wake up the next day, I guess. And yes, I did just pull that out of my arse! Totally! And there's times where he says to stop as well as times he says to not stop. I think it's the whole struggling with temptation thing, do you stop at the red light or go ahead and give in to the temptation of sex, drink, drugs, partying etc. What happens when you struggle to resist it and when you give in. But I do think almost all the lyrics in trilogy are well written, clever, and very revealing. I love them. Actually, that's what I love about Billie's lyrics in general - they have so much meaning, and it's fun to decipher them and try to figure out all the profound meanings they have. I'm totally a lyrics geek, with Green Day especially, but also just overall. Except I still don't know what this Julianna homicide thing is. "I searched the moon, i lost my head, i even looked under the bed" :/ come on. There's some others but i can only think of these: "She gave up on jesus for living on venus" "I like your BMW, I like you BM excellent tits" I was curious if in Drama Queen "she dangles from her necklace" is that a really lazy lyric, or something clever where the person in question is tied to fashion that controls her life rather than the other way round. "She gave up on jesus for living on venus" I would say that's someone giving up on Christianity to join some sort of cult. Many people consider cults weird, distant, unknown, dangerous things, which is like living on venus. Dunno about the other lyrics though.
