DookieLukie
GD has 10 years on Coldplay Let do by album by album GD last 10x album was 2005 Coldplay went 10x plus on 2005 2008 and almost 10x in 2011 I have to say a band thats has sold nearly the same amount WITH ALOT FEWER albums (Green Day 11 Coldplay 5) you can say Coldplay has higher popularity as GD sales have gone down Coldplay hasn't And since tours are being factored in GD has never made it into the highest grossing while Coldplay has twice So you can argue on both bands really it boils down to the fan's perception To me Green Day is a better band Your stats are wrong. Check your sources.
WhiteTim
Your stats are wrong. Check your sources. Im going by by RIAA which you can also look at their wiki Which album is wrong? X&Y is 13 million Vida is 10 million (which i know for a fact as my friend was an engineer and has the plaque) Mylo is 8 million So what album is wrong sales? Iain
U2 and Coldplay do sound very similar, especially if you listen to early Coldplay. That isn't my complaint. I'm just providing statistical evidence that Green Day is more successful/popular. Sheesh. My point is that you're only going by sales while some bands haven't been around as long as Green Day and made as many albums, and while you're at it, you're shitting on other bands people like and claiming them as inferior or less popular (yes you are), while claiming not to be a "crazy fan who thinks Green Day is better than any other band". This is clearly the case as you're not exercising your claim very well. For example: Yes FF has a good following, but Green Day has a bigger mainstream audience. Even in the past 10 years, Green Day has dominated the Foo Fighters. It's facts man. In your opinion. Maybe they have sold less albums than Green Day (citation needed), but at the same time, they have a following just as big, if not more. Before stating facts, at least cite/link sources to stated facts. Either way, album sales don't exactly define the bigger band, as bands like the Foos, Coldplay, and more have big audiences behind them as much as Green Day, end of. Your points thus far are mostly, if not nearly, entirely subjective. You're making claims as if they're facts and even telling others to check their sources; where are yours? You've pulled jack shit so far and haven't linked or referenced any statistics and any citations. Personally, I call your information bunk as well as your opinions. You're just a fanboy. End. HolyHandGrenade
Uno is my favorite of the Trilogy. Nuclear Family/Stay the Night/Carpe Diem/Let Yourself Go - those are songs we've been listening to shitty recordings and hearing about in reviews and interviews since 2011. They're already the classics of the Trilogy imo. That line up of those 4 is absolutely perfect, and I wouldn't have it any other way. And 3 of them are getting cheated out of a glorious place on their standard set list
WhiteTim
And 3 of them are getting cheated out of a glorious place on their standard set list Yeah they need to bring back Nuclear Family and LYG i lnow LYG is a bit redundant but its a great live track
HolyHandGrenade
Well I wasn't talking about talent outside of one or two songs I dont really care for em and I dont really hear the U2 comparison (but them I'm not a U2 fan so that could be why) It's mostly critics and fans that create this opinion out of hype... the same thing with U2 and Muse, U2 and The Killers, etc... It's essentially the same as Oasis, Keane and Coldplay being "The New Beatles", granted, Coldplay is more similar to U2 than that, although it matches up loosely across multiple albums Yeah they need to bring back Nuclear Family and LYG i lnow LYG is a bit redundant but its a great live track Better than Know Your Enemy at least
Todd
And 3 of them are getting cheated out of a glorious place on their standard set list Yep. Nuclear Family I didn't expect to be kicked out. Carpe Diem- Sounds great live, but goes too fast. I also liked the old lyrics better It would be an extremely pleasant surprise if Let Yourself Go was played at an upcoming concert. Completely unexpected.

WhiteTim
ps shitty ass coldplay aren't on there either They are 10 or so million away from being on the list They are however on the list for highest selling tour TWICE while GD has never been listed once And Metallica had a hit in 2003/2004 with St Anger so that goes your no other band argument
HolyHandGrenade
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_best-selling_music_artists green day are on the list of best selling music artists of all time. they're not at the top of the list or anything, but there's not a single band on there who's had a radio hit in the past ten years, let alone multiple radio hits. the trilogy might have flopped but there's not really any argument that they're the biggest band in their genre. and no, foo fighters aren't on that list. i love them and wasting light sold almost twice what uno did in it's first week but overall green day has them beat, not that it's a competition especially since they're nothing alike. just saying ps shitty ass coldplay aren't on there either If it's a competition, Dave Grohl still wins FF, Nirvana, QOTSA, and Them Crooked Vultures probably > Green Day, FBHT, and The Network

WhiteTim
ok well they still aren't on there so come back whenever they sell ten million more records and then you can tell me that coldplay have sold more records than green day which as of right now that haven't. it's not an argument, it's a fact. metallica are obviously huge and i'm not going to argue than green day are ~more popular~ than them because i honestly don't give two fucks but green day have still had multiple hits from american idiot onward, albeit not recently. all i was trying to say was the trilogy not doing well doesn't really mean shit in the grand scheme of things. they're arguably one of the biggest bands of all time and certainly one of the biggest bands in a post-nirvana world and that's proven by the number of albums they've sold. well i shouldn't even have to say that dave grohl obviously wins everything Answer me this who selling more albums on a album to album basis... in the last 10 years i'll wait... Flyingdonutz
Are people actually arguing that Coldplay is better than Green Day? I sure hope not. To elaborate, Green Day have sold 75 million albums worldwide, making them one of the biggest bands of all time. They are still merely halfway through their career, they still have potential to sell another 30, 40 million NEW albums. Leading them into the 120-130 million range once all is said and done. That's as many as a band like Metallica, or Aerosmith. More than Guns N' Roses. More than Van Halen. And a shitload more than Coldplay. Green Day are one of the best American bands of all time, the most talented punk band of all time, and hands down the best mainstream band that has blown up since 1990. Better than Nirvana, better than Nickelback, better than the Foo Fighters, better than Blink, and better than Coldplay. I think I can safely rest my case on those points. And while Dave Grohl is an amazing drummer and an amazing musician, he isn't quite Billie Joe when it comes to songwriting ability. But between NIrvana and the Foo Fighters he proves to be one of the best of our time along with Billie. They are 10 or so million away from being on the list They are however on the list for highest selling tour TWICE while GD has never been listed once And Metallica had a hit in 2003/2004 with St Anger so that goes your no other band argument Every Metallica fan I know hates St Anger. No GOOD solos with Kirk Hammett? There goes logic, right down the piss hole. I have too many strong opinions to stop editing this post. I'd also like to say that when historians look back at these past two decades, they'll see how Green Day, unlike Nirvana, Coldplay, the Foo Fighters, etc, came up with a sound that you can't compare to ANYTHING. Green Day did what the Beatles did, did what Van Halen did, did what GnR did, did what Metallica did, just did it in the 90's. Dookie is a sound like NO OTHER, while bands like Nirvana are as simple as Ramones + Metal. Coldplay, I don't listen to, but they certainly are no where near Green Day's creativity and originality from what i have heard. the Foo Fighters are a good band, when you've got a guy like Dave Grohl you're going to be great, and while they are up there with Green Day for popularity, they are not as popular as Green Day. Green Day don't need mainstream media following them around for the same reason someone like ACDC doesn't, because they have a dedicated fanbase following them around because of CONSISTENT, AMAZING material being released on a 1-3 year basis. Because of ORIGINALITY. Because of creativity. They are bigger than the media. That is the face of a legendary band.

Green Day has sold looots of albums because they've got a lot and they started the band really young if you compare to other bands but their talent shouldn't be estimate only with the numbers of sold albums. because being realistic if you ask majority of people on this planet most of them will say they prefer Nirvana to GD. Iain
nearly every single point i made was fact, not an opinion at all. and as for what flyingdonutz said, the main point was still "green day have sold 75 million records, making them one of the biggest bands of all time". that's not subjective. that's fact. green day vs nirvana is all opinion and i'll leave that to the rest of y'all to argue about I'm not arguing every point everyone is stating, but it seems a lot of this thread is trying to state facts when in reality a lot of them are just subjective fandom. Flyingdonutz
The only talent that Nirvana has above Green Day is drumming. And that being said, Tre Cool is still a fantastic drummer. Billie is a better lyricist, and while this is my opinion, Kurt Cobain is the most overrated musician of all time. Nirvana are the most overrated band of all time IMO, but Cobain is just not at all as good as everyone thinks he is. He's still great, but legendary? No. I'd still rather see bands like Nirvana come around today, though. Nothing wrong with what they did. Just wish they weren't viewed as gods among the people.
