I really hate to be the one to tell you this, but I'm pretty sure that he sings "How low is this brutal love."

There. I did it. I shattered your favorite lyric.

*checks iTRE! lyrics sleeve*

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

But, 'low' still kind of highlights how messed up the relationship is...fuck it, this has ruined everything

I know the Trilogy was supposed to be simple like their old stuff, but lyrically it's a huge disappointment. Tons of catchy songs, most with bland lyrics. Green Day, even before AI, has been known for clever lyrics. Nothing deep, but some kind of clever metaphor or goofy comparison. Anyone reading this knows what I mean, so I won't give examples. The Trilogy lacks anything clever or personal. Just sort of bland, meaningless lyrics. Now a few songs escape this of course. It seems Green Day is too serious a band to go back to the apathetic and goofy lyrical style they used to have. In saying basically "I'm an idiot," Insomniac screamed "I perfect the science of the idiot." Those clever lines made Green Day very fun to listen to.

That being said, my favorite lyrics come from "Lazy Bones" as it is a deep song of personal anguish, and "Brutal Love" which is extremely easy to relate to.

I love Walk Away, a lot.

'I dont wanna be an imbecile, but Jesus made me that way'

I like this line a lot!

That's Sex Drugs and Violence...

I love the line from Missing You:

"Feels so far like this lone star. It gets so hard when I'm missing you."

But all of these lyrics that are chosen are amazing and a few are my personal favourites as well :)

Feel like the trilogy had some of Green Day's weakest lyrics to date, but there were some gems in there too.

"Drop out, drop dead hideous." - Brutal Love

"The scar remains reminding me that I'm still living" - Walk Away

To name some that haven't been mentioned yet :)

"like a lifelong daisy chain of my imagination, a rat inside a maze, i got no destination" - Little Boy Named Train

As well as the Rusty James lyric. I must say that I think the trilogy albums have the strongest songwriting of all Green Days albums.

UNO

  1. “Gonna ride the world like a merry-go-round” (Nuclear Family).

DOS

2. “And this silence is so defeaning / it’s like picking at a sore”. (Lazy Bones)

Silence can be so defeaning… it makes you hear all the voices in your head… and that’s not good.

Hopefully we have Green Day and their music to fill those moments of silence!

3. “I can’t sleep tonight / ‘cause I’m so tired”. (Lazy Bones)

4. “You are where you are, a wish on a shooting star”. (Ashley)

5. “May I have this last dance/ by chance if we should meet ?/ Can you write me a lullaby / so we can sing you to sleep?”. (Amy)

TRE

6. “You’re not around /And I’m a complete disaster / I’m missing you”. (Missing You)

7. “Hey, little kid / did you wake up late one day? / You’re not so young, but you’re still dumb /and you’re numb to your old glory, / but now it’s gone”.

8. “It’ll pass / The swelling never really lasts / But the scar remains / Remind me that I’m still living” (Walk Away).

9. “Fuck the world, this is my revolution” (Dirty Rotten Bastards)

10. “Where in the world did the time go? / It’s where your spirit seems to roam.” (The Forgotten)

I started writing comments on each line but it takes me too much time :(

Ashley in general is lyrical (and musical) gold. The lyrics feel so dirty, yet somewhat in an epic sense, personally I love "You're looking like hell, but you're no fucking saint".

It's so weird to me that a lot of people think the trilogy has weak lyrics. There are a few not so good ones, but overall I find the lyrics to be clever and meaningful. All of the songs seem so relatable and real, and it's clear that Billie cared about what the lyrics communicated. I find many to be some of the best of their career, though Green Day has always had really good lyrics overall. So I made a list of some of my favorite lines.

UNO

"Like a nuclear bomb and it won't be long 'til I detonate" - Nuclear Family

"Making a living making a killing" - Carpe Diem

"It's your lie, tell it how you like" - Let Yourself Go

"And the beginners don't even know what song they're singing" - Rusty James

"And your heart can't even break when it doesn't even pound" - Rusty James again

"Old story, same old story, won't you see the light of day" - Oh Love

DOS

"I'm a beggar but I don't want a dime" - Fuck Time

"I don't want your sympathy, I don't want your honesty, I just wanna get some peace of mind" - Lazy Bones

"She gave up on Jesus for living on Venus" - Wild One

"Everything that I want, I want from you, but I just can't have you" - Stray Heart

"Did you tattoo a lucky charm to keep you out of harm's way?" - Amy

"Can you write me a lullaby so we can sing you to sleep?" - Amy again

TRÉ

"And you were searching your soul, and you got lost and out of control. You went over the edge of choking, died of a broken heart" - X-Kid

"I've been getting lost searching my soul all around this town" - Sex, Drugs, & Violence (I like how it relates back to X-Kid too!)

"Is this some kind of love that only hate would understand?" - Amanda

"But the scar remains, remind me that I'm still living" - Walk Away

"We're too old to be misbehaved, we sold our souls and so ashamed of ourselves" - Dirty Rotten Bastards

"We share the scars of our abandon, and what we remember becomes folklore" - The Forgotten

It's interesting that some of my very favorite songs (like Wow! That's Loud and Brutal Love) weren't in my list, but I think they're stronger as overall songs for some reason.

My favorite:

"This broken scene/ is turning green/ like brass knuckles left in the rain/ Death wish kids among the living."

I wouldn't choose any of those songs really. I'd do Brutal Love, Amanda, or Sweet 16. Those have the most meaning in them imo

I feel like their best stanza is-
"It will pass, the swelling never really lasts, but the scar remains remind me, that I'm still living..."- Walk Away

What about

"I took a wrong turn at growing up and now it's freaking me out"

I love the honesty and straightforwardness of the Trilogy lyrics. It's a huge breath of fresh-air after 21st Century Breakdown's beautifully-poetic-yet-occasionally-convoluted lyrics. The only song to me that has really boneheaded rhymes would be Fell For You, but even then there's a massive amount of yearning behind those really simple words.

Lyrically, one of my favorite songs has to be Wow! That's Loud. It's a song about energy and lust, and yet there's a sort of longing to it. Billie's not just saying "Wow that dirty dress is so loud" he's saying it with some sort of restrained longing that's itching to be released.

Plus I love the verses, they have some excellent lines: "Wearing a psychotic red alert/Your bouquet of flowers in the dirt/Radioactive and primal, Nuclear and so delightful/Wearing day-glo where you know it hurts"

Also "Dressed to the nines like a black cat's eyes" is fantastic imagery. Wow! That's Loud is an excellent song through and through.

I could go on and on about most songs but I'll leave it there.

#1 My fav line from the whole trilogy has to be from X-Kid - "I fell in love, but it didn't catch your fall."

#2 Dirty Rotten Bastards - "Gunna take it further, get away with murder and no-one here is getting out alive."

#3 Carpe Diem - "Carpe Diem a battle cry! Are we all too young to die?"

#4 Stay The Night - "I gotta know if you're the one that got away. Even though it was never meant to be."

#5 Fuck Time - "Drop your laundry and slam the door! I want your love so give me more!"

After living with the trilogy for a while, I honestly think it contains some of the most honest and heartfelt lyrics the band have ever written. That said, I agree with pretty much every example here. They are all brilliant.

"-cause you will always be my, well you will always be my

you will always be my sweet sixteen." - Sweet 16

This was a song that always reminded me about a girl who was really special to me and then I decided to let her go after realizing that she wasn't the one for me.

My personal faves are: (in no particular order)

1. So won't you stay and count the circles round my eyes? And we can watch the stars until the sun begins to rise - Stay the Night.

This reminds me of what I call the night. Where you have a girl who you are in love with and it doesn't have to be a sexual encounter. You just lie there talking all night until the sun comes up.

2. When there's no-one left around, and you're the last gang in town, coz you're heart cant even break when it doesn't even pound - Rusty James.

This reminds me of being like the last man standing from a group of friends. Everyone grows up/changes/moves on, but you're still in the same place you always were.

3. You used to dangle my heart with your puppet strings - Ashley

Manipulation and being used in a relationship.....been there.

4. Is your heart singing out of tune or are your eyes just singing the blues - Amy

This reminds me of the empty feeling you get when you lose someone close to you. Kinda like an eternal sadness.

5. Waking up, feeling naked, in my clothes inside a room that's vacant - Missing You

Again been there lol. Just makes me think of the stage after a relationship where you're out at bars and come home drunk, and fall asleep,, only to wake up and miss the person who used to lie beside you.

6. And you were searching your soul, And you got lost and out of control, And you went over the edge of joking, died of a broken heart - X-Kid

This makes me feel like it is all over. You've lost everything, and its either the end of you or a new beginning....not a physical death to me.

7. I'm always lost and nothing will change, Give me directions and I'll get lost again - Little Boy Named Train

Just reminds me of always trying to find yourself and find a place in life.

8. I'm fucked up beyond intervention, fuck the world this is my revolution, long lost souls and living in cages, I'm on a bender that's one for the ages - Dirty Rotten Bastards

This reminds me of how I feel right before I'm really gonna lose my shit. That feeling that you're gonna fly off the handle.

9. Chop me a line of my best friends ashes, dust to dust when the red light flashes, what the fuck does ok stand for, when the afterlife is nothing worth dying for? - Dirty Rotten Bastards

Again this is the while losing your shit and questioning everything. Really powerful verse.

10. Well don't look away from the arms of a bad dream, don't look away sometimes its better lost than to be seen - The forgotten

To me this is like when you're vulnerable it can be better to disappear for a while rather than have your vulnerability exposed for all to see and potentially be taken advantage of.
