Gregorovich
Going to be honest, Billie isn't a great lyricist. Sure, there are a few stand-out moments (JoS, Letterbomb, 21CB), but the standard of lyrics pre-and-post-AI/21CB is pretty average. I'd say Don McLean was the greatest lyricist I've ever listened to, possibly followed by Tim McIlrath.

There's some real poetry in there.
Sarcasm
Personally I'm rooting for some Warning action. The lyrics on there are really personal, and let's not forget it was the first time they produced something together as an experiment. I love all the songs on Warning, and my guess is that they're gonna do the lyrics for Waiting or Macy's Day Parade, simply because of the line about coffins being on sale. That's so raw. I hope they feature some Warning lyrics too and not go with the 'popular' albums only.Personally I'm rooting for some Warning action. musso_kn
I will not say that Billie Joes is the world's greatest lyricist. His skills are still pretty solid though, and he has a knack for capturing the zeitgeist and conveying feelings and a sense of humanity very effectively, which is more than what I can say for the majority of modern songwriters. Gregorovich
Are you crazy? I think the lyrics on Warning are some of the best ever. There's some real poetry in there. There's nothing on Warning which compares to McLean, McIlrath or Townshend. They only seem average because the genre he inspired spent the next 10 years attempting to top Dookie. I'm not talking about pop-punk Dookie-wannabes. I'm talking about musicians who write exceptional music. American Pie is one of the most lyrically complex pieces ever written. I couldn't bring myself to even compare it to punk.
Sarcasm
If it's gonna be "new" stuff it's probably gonna be Jesus of Suburbia, but I'm still hoping for Warning or perhaps Whatsername.
J&TheNight
Billie is a fantastic lyricist. I've been saying that for years. But you know who might be better? Brandon Flowers, the man constantly pours out magic. I doubt he'll be included in this though.

But that's best left to another thread.

J&TheNight
I'd dispute this, on the basis of having heard most of their singles. But that's best left to another thread. Those lyrics are way more clever than people see them for, but they are almost always the simplest songs on the records. I own every album and have spent just as much time being a Killers fan as a Green Day fan and can honestly say that Brandon and Billie write about entirely different things almost always, which is why they're both fantastic lyricists in entirely different ways. I had to pop into this thread. This was my reaction to Gregorovich's post: Billie Joe is an astoundingly talented lyricyst. I find that one of the best things about his lyrics is that he uses an entire vocabulary that no other writers use. He doesn't go for the obvious rhymes and standard words that you always hear in songs. With so many rock/pop songs you can guess words before you hear them--with Billie, you're always surprised. One other great thing about his lyrics is that he can convey a complex thought with very few words. That's rare and wonderful. I could go on and on, but I don't have the time now. Elena
Warning had amazing lyrics, some of my favorites ever! American Idiot had also great lyrics and i especially love how it tells a story through the complete album, though the lyrics to 21st Century Breakdown were probably even better than those on AI....I've always prefered AI as an album, but if i just look at the lyrics i'd have to say that some songs on 21stCB have really stunning lyrics... i don't think the lyrics on the trilogy albums were that great but it also had some few good lyrics, especially on Tre (Dirty Rotten Bastards or 99 Revolutions e.g.) so i think it's more than deserved that they're in the list
IcyMoffatt
SilentlyDrawn: You can buy Kerrang in Montreal. Each friday, two weeks after each Kerrang issue goes on sale in Europe, Relay (inside Berri-uqam subway station) receives the magazine. If you want to buy the Kerrang that will go on sale tomorow in Europe, you will be able to do it in two weeks. It's the only place where you can buy it, but Relay only receives like five or six copies each friday. In my case, I'm not sure yet if I will buy this new issue. Vic_Rattlehead
I don't even want to read this, it's just going to be "Oh my god Kurt Cobain is so good, he changed my life, even though I wasn't around when Nevermind came out". So sick of it -_- Billie deserves a spot though, as does Alex Turner from Arctic Monkeys, Marilyn Manson and John Lennon, but since it's Kerrang we're not likely to see them. I'm the first to criticize Green Day a lot of the time by lyrically Billie Joe is a stunning writer. His ability to portray really quit complex and confusing emotions and ideas not only simply, but beautifully is incredible. He's a true poet. Slave To The Network
Yay!! They certainly should be! Billie is an absolutely brilliant songwriter! His lyrics are so true and full of emotion. He puts his whole heart and soul into them. Definitely THE best lyricist I've ever come across in my opinion!

DookieLukie
Green Day has had great lyrics from Dookie to 21CB. The thing that made Green Day so unique was their upfront honesty in their lyrics, and their sarcastic sense of humor. Lines like "magic man, egocentrentic plastic man" equipped with Billie's snarl make for some very interesting lyrics. Songs like Basket Case and Nice Guys Finish Last are stuffed full of metaphors and imagery. There's something about Green Day's lyrics that set them apart. For these reasons, one can see why the Trilogy sucked. Instead of drawing out metaphors ("I'm feeling like a dog in heat") the Trilogy said things far too straighforward ("I want to choke you til your blue in the face"), which makes it lose the dry, sarcastic sense of humor. I think that's the Trilogy's main problem: taking the lyrics too seriously for the subject matter.
