Billie is the reason I love guys in eyeliner

It has been a strongly held opinion of mine since 2004 that more guys need to wear eyeliner.  I still have a clear memory of looking at a picture of them in some interview then and thinking "You did not look like that in the 90s".

And I love that he's wearing more eyeliner lately.  Keep it up man. (uh oh, that comment might trigger a joke from @herewegoagain)

Ok so I kid a lot about Billie sexiness but I'd like to discuss his onstage behavior because it's really interesting. I've been to a lot of concerts in my life and the only other performer I've seen who was as sexual as Billie onstage is Prince. But honestly, I think Billie even has him beat with just pure boldness when you consider the onstage masturbation and some of his banter. I mean that older video of him talking about phalic symbols next to his mouth, that is edgy man. And even now with the return of the stage humping and the extended crotch-grabbing, he just can't help himself. And it is so different than how he is off-stage. I'm very interested in psychology and I have to wonder, what drives this? It's like he's making sexual overtures to the fans. I guess the simplest explanation is that he truly finds performing to be a turn-on, or it is a sexual experience for him. I really don't think it's all an act. I just think it's worth mentioning because I really think it's one of the things that makes him stand out as a performer.

*claps* Yes, more guys need eyeliner. This is a platform I can get behind.

I get what you mean. I always think about this when I watch Michael Jackson on stage. His dancing and his songs can be very sexual, but off stage, he wasn't really like that. So I always wondered what prompted this and how he could just turn it off and on like a switch.

This has always interested me too. I've always been curious as to why he seems so shy off-stage, when, as you say, he's so bold with the sexual banter onstage. I've recently decided to study psychology at A-level, with the hope that it'll give me some understanding of Billie's behaviour. It just puzzles me because I've never come across anyone like Billie. I've always thought that it seems like he is very trusting of the audience, so maybe that makes him feel more comfortable onstage than he is in public, therefore he feels he can get away with those antics. Just a theory though...

Short of asking him we really don't know, but I'm sure the rush of performing for him has a lot to do with it. It's a release similar to how actors get to be a different person onstage or in front of a camera where they normally might be shy. In the past I would have said the sexy talk and uninhibited behavior had to do with alcohol, etc. which I'm sure helped but that's no excuse any more. Nice to see performing is intoxicating enough all by itself that he can still let loose any way he feels. I'm sure it's also just his sense of humor he finds it funny because it gets a reaction.

It's funny you mention this because I just finished watching the full concert from London O2 Arena 2009 for the second time. The first time I saw it was after I saw them in Pittsburgh in March. I was less familiar with the RevRad set and their tours as a whole, but I love 21CB and I remember thinking that was some incredible show and I'm sorry to have not seen them then in what I considered to be their prime.

Flashforward to now, and I saw them more recently in Cleveland and then went back and watched O2 again. This time I realised something -- that show and the shows they are doing now are virtually identical in terms of shtick, songs and energy. With the exception of just a song or two, and obviously switching out the 21CB songs for RevRad you have the same show. They are performing now just like they were then, and now I know that I didn't miss a thing. Now I know as that tour went on it changed a lot but we also know there was a lot of drama and problem drinking behind the scenes. Take that away and the set may not have changed much like it's holding steady now. What we call spontaneity may have just been chaos. But in Oct 2009 it was a polished professional set just like you're seeing now.

Good point. And I would go further to say that the show I saw recently in Cincy was much more fun, uninhibited, and relaxed than the one I saw during the AI tour. Now that might have just been a point in AI when he felt done with the tour, but the Rev Rad tour has been going on for a long time and Billie seems like he's becoming more uninhibited, not less. And yes I'm sure that's with no substances. So Billie's sexiness and playfulness I think is coming from a place of fulfillment. It's who he is. He's a sex-focused dude. And Billie if you're reading this, there's nothing wrong with that. Please don't stop.

I agree..(well i haven't chance to see him performance live) but what I saw and re-watch some of live video from you tube, I thought he is one of natural sexy performancer from 21-22 century. That is why he really truly happy doing what he does best is on stage.

You both should read about Sigmund Freud and his work. Then you should get your answers about Billie's behaviour on and off stage. It's not the perfect explanation and it's kind of an old theory, but it does make a lot of sens.

Wow! I didn't know Billie would live over 200 years! We are in the 21st century right now and you predict he will still be doing sexy performances during concerts between the years 2100 and 2199 (22nd century). Too bad we will be all dead by the time it gets to the 22nd century. What a strong man he is!

Spoiler

Joke aside, I know you wanted to say 20 and 21 centuries.

Oh! I forgot to tell you the small conversation I had today with one of my coworkers/friend/cosplay buddy... call her whatever you want! So, I told her I bought myself a ticket this week to see Swmrs in december. She replied «Well, that's not Green Day for once!» Me: «No, but Billie Joe's son is in Swmrs!» Her:  «Now I know what you might do after the concert.» XD Hell no! I'm not going to run after Joey! I don't fangirl about him, lol. My coworker belives I'm a stalker because I ended in front of GD' s hotel in Toronto. That wasn't my fault their hotel was on my way to my hotel!

I know! But I wasn't referencing to Oedipus complex. LoL Freud's work isn't just about this complex. Whatever, nevermind! I'm just good at «me mettre les pieds dans les plats».:ga:

Don't worry, I knew you were joking. :P

And yes, Michael Moore and Billie Joe on the same stage, it sounds interesting! I guess Billie will stay in NYC for awhile around the time of the concert, mostly to visit Jakob.

I am finally home from my trip to Austin and I am exhausted and sore all over but, before I go to bed here are my thoughts which I know you all were anxiously awaiting.

First - fuck the Austin 360 Amphitheater. From our seats we had a great view of the stage and pretty damn close. Until everyone stood up. There isn't enough of a slope to the seating area and I could barely see over the heads of the people in front of me. And not the just the row directly in front; two and three rows in front were still blocking my view. I had to look between people, which is hard when everyone is "jump, jump, jump" ing. Luckily there large screens on each side of the stage and that's how I watched most of the show.

Second -  As everyone has already noticed there is also more of BIllie's sexual teasing too. I don't remember anything as tame as his St Jimmy hip thrusts in Houston but I may have forgotten.  Also the whole band seemed to be enjoying themselves even more than they were earlier in the tour.  They spent so much time smiling and laughing and mugging for the audience and camera that I fell in love all over again. And Billie used his deep growling voice so much I was weak kneed most of the night.

Third - too many damn people in the audience seemed to be phoning it in.  There were many in the sections on each side of me that weren't singing or jumping or waving hands.  It looked like a lot of them had loosened up by the end but it still annoyed the hell out of me.

Fourth - I'm getting too old for this shit. When I got out of bed this morning my body felt like I had been worked over by a bat. A wiffle ball bat but still...

Thanks. I did have a really good time. And Austin isn't as humid as other parts of Texas so the weather was really nice, cool and with a breeze. And I'm sure BJ enjoyed it too.  He wasn't totally drenched at the end of the night like he has been lately.

One of the best parts was the guy  next to me. He and his girlfriend seemed to be in their later teens, maybe HS seniors.  Anyway the guy was so very excited about each and every song. It was extremely cute - even to my jaded, cynical mind. When they started Jesus of Suburbia I thought this kid was going to lose his damn mind. He was screaming and jumping and punching the air . "OH MY GOD! YEAH! *incoherent yelling*!!!"  My black heart lightened by just a little.

But that's a lot to read--what specific part of Freud's theories are you referring to? I'm intrigued.

Thanks. They weren't necessarily tall it was the way the seating is arranged. The incline wasn't steep enough. The view was close to the way it would be if we were all standing level.

But I'm still very glad I went. I had a very good view of one of the screens and there is nothing like being there in person.  Even though my feet, back and throat are all sore today.

My friend took a stealth video of me singing along with everyone else. I explained to her, in detail, the very bad things that would happen to her if she posts that thing anywhere. I sure hope she paid attention because I would really hate to have to murder her.

I agree that Billie's sexual antics are one of the things that make him stand out as a performer. I think a lot of it is to do with being a showman, he loves to have the crowd in the palm of his hand and tease them, and also simply to be the centre of attention/show off on stage. And he likes to push boundaries, and has a sense of humour, so doing it in a saucy/tongue in cheek way is just right. It's different to how he is off stage for sure but I think it's all just part of his natural personality as a performer.

I think the main difference from the old days is it used to come out more as just trying to be shocking or gross. Now he's sexy and he knows it , so he plays it in a more teasing/sexy way.

Yes- the concert I went to was this as well.  Incline not steep enough and I'm only 4'11" so it was really difficult to see unless I was able to hit it just right between people :(   BUT it was still one of the best nights of my life and definitely THE BEST concert I've EVER been to!
