Maybe I'm a sentimental romantic, but if a guy wrote a song that heartfelt for me I would melt. It shows how much he loves Adie and that's a beautiful thing. Especially since he wrote When It's time when he was 19 to his then girlfriend Adrienne. That's pretty sweet. yeah its really kinda cute

I personally think that the greatest love song ever written is Church on Sunday. It talks about a real relationship and how to make that work. That is what love really is, wanting to be with someone so much you are willing to compromise to maintain that relationship. And both parties need to compromise. Church on Sunday is just a freakin' perfect beautiful, honest song about a relationship. When It's Time is a hallmark card and I'm sure it meant alot to Adrienne. My personal opinion it should have stayed their secret. FYI, I don't like 2000 Light Years Away either. I'm not a huge fan of early GD. I do like the early stuff because it shows the talent and the potential to be great. They lyrics he wrote as a young man were amazing. But overall, I get tired of the 3 chord power chord songs. There are some gems on Kerplunk, but to me, 2000 Light Years Away is not one of them. I think the sappier ones are real as well in their own way. Sometimes with love songs like that it's all very trite but with Billie they seem to really be from the heart. I think being unashamedly sappy and romantic because that's how he felt, rather than trying to hide the sappiness and make it cooler/edgier, is impressive, especially at a young age and when he was trying to make his way in a punk scene. I like that he isn't afraid to show that side of his feelings sometimes, as well as to write in a more complex way about the realities of a relationship at other times. I agree that the sappier ones are real to the person they are written for, thus why I said it meant alot to Adrienne. My personal opinion I don't like sappy love songs, of any kind, because it is not something I can relate too unless it was written by hubby. Also, they tend to be not great musically. When you are truly talking about how you feel about someone it is very personal and I have a hard time relating to someone elses feelings about someone. It is just the way I am. Where when he writes about the more complex nature of a relationship, I feel it is something that I can relate to more easily because he is talking about the troubles most couples feel at one time or another, not necessarily how they personally feel about each other. I really don't see it as impressive that he wrote a sappy love song, at any age, one that easily could have been sung by Michael Buble.

Yes, and you know, his hyric writing has a certain lilt to it that is distnctively Billie, like his use of language in uexpected ways, and his placing of unaccented syllables onto accented beats, that kind of thing. So when he's writing a sappy love song, it comes out kind of awkward, and it's sweet. Like he's trying to say how he feels and he can't quite put it into a perfect package of words. That's the feeling I get with "When it's Time". It's not perfectly written, it's kind of awkward, but it's Billie being himself. We all know how he gets when he's trying to talk. He's not nearly as articulate as he is with music. I don't know, it's just my impression of that song. But I don't like the recorded version, I just like the HLAHG version, it's more pure. You've explained my feelings about it! He writes sappy love songs in an endearing way. And I still think it was quite impressive to write songs about his real sappy romantic feelings without fear and then go and sing them in a punk club, takes some guts. I understand not relating to it though, and agree they're far from the best songs musically.

It does not sound like it came out of the Michael Buble play book. I have a feeling none of the punks were actually listening to the words. 1 minute ago, GenXIdiot said: Yeah there's some on 1039 and Kerplunk, isn't there? They apparently had trouble being allowed to play Gilman in the early days because they were so poppy compared to a lot of the other bands and you see them jokingly referenced as being like a boyband in that My Adventure With Green Day story etc, I think they were known to have some quite un-punk, lovey dovey songs. I wasn't interested in this movie because, like you, I don't really like the sound of the Green Day AI in the Musical Theatre style, in recordings I've heard. Music Theater is not my favorite. But it sounds like the movie offers insight into the craft of the thing and Billie's role as well. I've seen clips of him in this movie and he's beautiful; stunning, really. Maybe I'll get a hold of this and watch it after all based on your recommendation I watched some of HLAHG on Youtube and it made absolutely no sense, terrible editing. But he looked beautiful in that, too. We've just been to see American Idiot for the second time. It's the whole package...the set, the energy, the music itself...the lyrics...the story...it's the whole thing together that makes it what it is. For me, it is especially relevant as it close to my son's own story. Anyway...you must have an open mind. Listening to the Cd is a far cry from being swept up in the presentation of it all. And HLAG was shite. Pure and simple. On 25/03/2016 at 9:39 PM, JJ1964 said: HLAHG is absolute utter dribble. It was one of the worst documentaries I have ever seen. Broadway Idiot is actually a very well made insight into the creative process and how Billie got involved in the usical. As far as American Idiot is concerned, it was one of the most exciting and exhilarating theatrical experiences of my life. You are on a roller coaster for the entire show. I would highly recommend it. Both my husband and myself wept openly at certain moments at AI. Emotional rollercoaster is a very good description! My all time favorite is still Whatsername. If I'm in a mood it still gets me choked up. Billie is so beautiful in videos of live performances of this, he puts his soul out there. GenXIdiot
Oh my God I can't believe I'm going to see Billie Joe in person next month at Tribeca Film Festival. I hope I don't die. I've never even seen Green Day before!!! The big question for now, will he still be blonde? Will he be rocking the dark roots? Or will he go back to black? And will it be an actual hairstyle or will he wear a hat??? I hope he wears his glasses!!!

He might want to look less scruffy than now, he usually gets a haircut or dyes his hair before events but there's still a chance he'll go with the movie style and flaunt the old man aesthetic. I agree Whatsername is just beautiful. They shoud play it live, he puts so much emotion into it and I just love the song and how relatable it is. The fabulous blonde hair might make that a little difficult...that's one thing I realized about it; you can't see his greys I like the little bit of grey hair that was showing when he had the black hair. This. :/ You're right, he really is getting better and better looking as he ages, and his imperfections are so endearing. I never really gave him a second thought until I first saw that 21 Guns video, and I was hit by the Billie Thunderbolt, he was suddenly so beautiful and dark and mysterious in that, and what was he, 37 or 38 for that album? He is aging so gracefully. I like the hairstyles he does with his hair spiked up because you can see more of his face and you can see his wrinkles I like those too, along with the grey and the glasses.
