Charlie Boston
I was just wondering because according to wikipedia Green Day has sold 75 million albums and I can't think of another punk band that has sold as many albums as them. Who has sold more? Does it matter? What does best selling mean? Albums? Or tour tickets?

Elena
Has Green Day really allready sold 75 m copies? I allways thought it were 65 yeah...the 65 million were after 21st Century Breakdown, but now they're released 3 new albums, so it's really about 75 million
Heather.
Has Green Day really allready sold 75 m copies? I allways thought it were 65 This being the official WIkipedia number... it was recently updated based on a dubious source. I find it a little maddening that we can't find any absolute, official sales numbers... I have seen a wide range of estimations from 45 million to 125 million Interesting to note that when Wikipedia had them at 65 million in sales they were on the best-selling artists of all time list (in the bottom category), but now that they are up to 75 million, they are no longer on the list... it seems more and more pop artists (and I suppose artists of the past) are also catching up and selling in the very high numbers. For example, Rihanna and Lady Gaga have already outsold Green Day, which isn't all that interesting or surprising, but they are much newer artists. It will be interesting to see how Green Day's back catalogue, in particular AI and Dookie, continue to sell in the long-run. Obviously these things do continue to gain appreciation as new generations become lucky enough to discover Green Day, but that is also pretty dependent on their continued relevance. I bought Dookie after I heard American Idiot and I'm so glad I did, as I'm sure many people here did.yeah...the 65 million were after 21st Century Breakdown, but now they're released 3 new albums, so it's really about 75 million To be fair, I don't think either the total sales of 21CB + the trilogy actually adds up to another 10 million albums sold... maybe half of that can be attributed to the last 4 albums... most of those sales are probably continued revenue from their more popular albums. The same problem can also be applied to movie sales. It seems like a new movie breaks a sales record each year, but that's just because of a larger population and inflation. If Green Day's numbers were translated into today's conditions (more retail options, wider audience, etc...) they'd be more impressive.

I see what you're saying... at least with music sales though it's done by # of products sold and not $ made... whereas films you have to really adjust for inflation because they don't count ticket stubs. It's not entirely worth assessing because of the changing face of the music industry, but at the same time, the really popular pop artists, like Adele, are still selling diamond amounts, so I'm not yet ready to completely disregard album sales as significant... but still not sure what Green Day's future looks like in that regard. I remember them all doing poorly their first week, but it's been a while, so... no idea ..though in my opinion they did okay in their first week, okay they weren't number one, but they were pretty high...just wondered why Tre wasn't higher.. though here it seems like everyone has already forgotten about the trilogy, so i doubt they did anything good now... DoubleTen95
Would anyone consider RHCP punk, at least just a little?
HolyHandGrenade
I'd say GD, The Clash or The Offspring. I would add Fall Out Boy and Blink 182, if that represents the top 5 best selling bands. FOB especially is going to see a huge increase this year.
Guest
Would anyone consider RHCP punk, at least just a little? Maybe their first couple of albums, before Blood Sugar... Definitely not now though.I would add Fall Out Boy and Blink 182, if that represents the top 5 best selling bands. FOB especially is going to see a huge increase this year. Not a chance on FOB. MCR would outsell them anyday.
Guest
Would anyone consider RHCP punk, at least just a little? Nope. I'd love to know how Green Day is actually doing for sales. I'd rank them higher than most other pop/punk bands, simply because they've been around for so long & have such a huge following. But yeah, would love to know how the Trilogy has done in comparison to AI

Guest
Like I said, that will change in the future Also pretty sure that the Sex Pistols and the Ramones should both be on there, way ahead of The Offspring or any modern "punk" band.
