Akshat
Not even Sex, Drugs & Violence? Hermione
I think the Trilogy is quantity AND quality. But even if you don't surely you can just listen to the normal length album worth of songs you consider to be quality and ignore the rest? As long as there's an album or two worth that you like I can't really see how it matters if the ones you don't like exist for other people to enjoy as well. Is Nimrod an unpopoular album? No, but I don't think it's a very popular/common favourite. Usually a few places down from number one on most people's lists.
localinsomniac
I grew up in North Attleboro and now live just west of Boston...you? I also went to college in state as well (both undergrad and grad)...proudly a lifelong MA resident! Well, there's also the fact that the album and lead song were both titled "American Idiot" as direct commentary on Bush and his policies. The whole album, while maintaining something of a linear storyline as you point out, absolutely has an overriding political theme. I know this is a discussion for another thread, but I thought it was generally accepted that it was a political album. Interesting- I grew up in Walpole, but went to high school with a lot of kids from NA. Good chance we know some of the same people!
Bastard of 1969
21st Century Breakdown and Dos are the 2 worst things green day have done. Well, i'm not agreeing with you, that were actually the best things that Green Day made. But OK, everybody has an opinion for itself.
beejeezee
That's why i can't stand him he needs to be more out there and have more fun out stage not just stand and play guitar he should have fun and the rest of the band. You're not watching the show right.
Hermione
You're not watching the show right.I know right? I love his charmingly subtle style. Three of my favourite ever highlights of seeing Green Day live are getting a nod of acknowledgement from Jason when my sister and I waved at him, noticing him sneak in some entertaining hip thrusting during St Jimmy, and seeing him put his arms in the air and slowly rotate doing some kind of sexy belly dance at a Foxboro show . He might not be as obvious and in-your-face as the others but he has just as much fun and puts just as much into the show. Watching him while most people's attention is on the rest of the band pays off.

I love most of the Trilogy, so I made a playlist of all my favourites so I don't skip or think 'oh god this is awful' at any point. I think a lot of people seem to forget they just don't have to listen to songs they dislike.. With Nimrod, I don't know where I'd place it. I like a lot of the songs but whenever I think of the album, the only song I think of is Nice Guys Finish Last which makes me instantly bump it down a few notches. iRun
I think that the whole "AI is a calling out of Bush" may have been true, but overall, I think the political message of that album/song got WAY overstated in 2004-05. It came out at such a time when there was a large movement in popular culture to get rid of Bush, and Bush-bashing was still seen as rebellious, since the Natalie Maines controversy was only about 16 months prior. It was a good move, publicity-wise to wear those Bush masks and to take a photo with John Kerry and whatnot. But in hindsight, the album really isn't stuck in a political moment. I think it's more sociopolitical than political. I agree. Pretty much the only political songs on that album is American Idiot and Holiday. 21st Century Breakdown is much much more political. I couldn't agree more with all of this, especially about Nimrod! Nice Guys Finish Last is the only song on Nimrod I think is average and Take Back is the only song I don't really like. Other than that I absolutely love everything - Nimrod is one of my favorite albums of all time, let alone Green Day's! Infact, The Grouch and Worry Rock are two of my top 3 Green Day songs along with Jesus of Suburbia. And probably one of my most unpopular opinions; She is my least favorite song off Dookie, and to be honest Dookie is one of my least favorite Green Day albums. It's not that I don't like it, I think it's great! It's just as I've seen other people say before whilst there are some awesome songs on Dookie there are also almost as many fairly average songs. munns6691
Not unpopular but something to ponder. The album Warning becomes much better during the spring, the songs are made for warm weather in my opinion.

Hermione
Just my opinion According to people who know the band (such as Aaron Cometbus), Mike's really chatty, interesting and funny. Telling stories and making jokes and observations, the life and soul of the party. I can see how he might come across as boring in comparison to the others in some interviews simply because as the songwriter/frontman Billie has more questions to answer, and Tre's personality is so loud and in your face, so he can be overshadowed. But by all accounts he definitely isn't, he's an interesting and funny guy. Have you watched many interviews with the band? There's some where Mike's a bit quiet but there's also lots where he's very entertaining, especially older ones. He's super entertaining and engaged with the crowd on stage too. DannyDirnt
I also think Mike Dirnt must be a kinda boring person, i also can't stand Jason White. You might have wrong impressions of them, then. I don't know much about Jason, but people claim that outside of Green Day he's much more talkative and funny. And, damn, where to begin with Mike? Most people get the impression of him being serious and quiet at first, but he's not at all. He's very funny, loves music, is an amazing cook, he's nice, he's a truly epic friend... What's not to like?I love you. 's not enough

Eva
That's why i can't stand him he needs to be more out there and have more fun out stage not just stand and play guitar he should have fun and the rest of the band. I really don't think it matters. First off, he may seem boring because we don't seem him as much; he's not in interviews with Billie, Mike, or Tre because he's not an "official" member. So, we don't have 20 years of interviews to get to know the guy. Second, if he wants to just stand there and play guitar, let him. As long as he's playing and helping the guys out, does it matter if he takes his pants off and humps the stage like Billie? Not really. He's doing his job. It's good enough for me. No, but I don't think it's a very popular/common favourite. Usually a few places down from number one on most people's lists. Huh. Nimrod's always been one of my favorites. There are a few songs that I don't particularly like, but overall, the album is genius.

On that note, there's an interview with Fat Mike of NOFX who makes this same point about Mike, to the extent that Mike doesn't know WHEN to shut up! So there's obviously this whole other side to him that we don't see much, but I can definitely picture based on older interviews, like you said. El Hefe - But that bassist is weird... Fat Mike - He can turn a 5 minute story to a 30 minute story...
