Unpopular Green Day Opinions

I think the problem with the set list is the repetition of it all. I feel like seeing them twice on the 21CB tour was like watching a show, then a rerun. I'm pretty sure if they just mixed it up people would be satisfied.

* So glad the guys dropped Wake me up when September ends from the setlists.

* I like Jesus of Suburbia, but please drop it!!! I wanna listen to Dirty Rotten Bastards plus one more song (could some from the trilogy or a rare old song)

I do wonder about Tre sometimes. He's obviously extremely talented, smart, and funny. He seems like a nice guy, and in a lot of ways he's the hardest to get to know as an individual because he uses humor to deflate all serious situations, so it's really hard to tell what kind of person he is, ya know? It's also just that I've just heard a lot of not-so-nice things about him over the years, from various places (ranging from Billie to fans). I love Tre for who we know him to be, I just wonder if I would really like him as a person. Not that we "know" Mike or Billie, but it sure feels like we understand a lot of who Billie is, and I feel like I have a general distant gauge of Mike's principles and personality. I just don't know a damned thing about who Tre *really* is, because it's hard for me to believe that the personality we see in interviews/on stage is 100% of what makes Tre Tre. It definitely sounds like he's a goofball in those private moments with friends too, it's obviously not just a show for the public, but there has to be more to him, and I feel like we never see it.

As a person, there's one thing we can say for sure. He fucking loves his friends, and he knows them. You watch any live video around the time of iHeart, Irving Plaza, etc. He spends most of the show watching Billie, looking worried, and not goofing around as he usually does. He knew what happened at iHeart was coming.

Personally though, I've always thought that out of all of them, Tré is the one I'd get on best with. I've never really been friends with or connected with someone who wasn't at least a bit fucking weird. Tré is unapologetically nuts, and I appreciate that. I do realise that a lot of people wouldn't like that, but hey, I'm definitely not like most people :P

Billie can be pretentious, and Mike can be dull. But Tré is fucking nuts. And that's always interesting.

I love how popular it is to have an unpopular opinion.

I also love that this is a thread where you can take a shit at anything without much fear of reprisal. This might as well be the "Take a shit at Green Day, its fans, and its members" thread and people would be like, "Well, your post in which you tear apart everything that Green Day stands for is highly appropriate." :P

I didn't even have an unpopular opinion to post, but now I'm just trying to think of one after having established that

I feel it's not our place to say things such as that about the band members, personally.

Tre's allowed to only show his goofy side to the public, if that's how he wants to deal with the band's publicity and fame. I'm sure he does have a serious side. As Ceadog already said, when watching the iHeart video, you can tell Tre is worried and wondering what the fuck is up with Billie, so obviously he does have concern and real emotions. But, to me, if he doesn't want to display them to the world as Billie and Mike might do (at least more than Tre) that's absolutely fine.

I'm not sure if I've mentioned it on this thread before, but:

Jesus of Suburbia ---> Dirty Rotten Bastards ---> Homecoming would make my day

Ceadog, if anyone is the "Tre" of GDC, it's you

Yeah, JOS is considered better than DRB for many fans (Including me), but it's time for more changes. Actually, I consider that just Holiday and BOBD could be the representatives songs from AI. I think the guys must make a new setlist, it would be cool to listen to other songs even if we couldn't get the chance to listen to JOS, AI, Basket Case, Longview, Hitchin' a ride or Brain stew/Jaded. We listened to those classics so many times, we need some "new blood", I wanna listen to more stuff from the trilogy or other older songs as I said previously.

I didn't mean to suggest Tre OWES us more of himself. I think it's smart on his part to just be that side of him with the public and reserve the rest of himself for his private life (perhaps because he's the smartest of them all?) I'm just saying because he does that, it leaves him the odd-dog-out in terms of emotional availability and doesn't allow the fans to connect on that particular level. I love Tre for what we know him to be.

I don't think we should assume that the guys in Green Day are in a certain way. Aaron Cometbus said that they're a lot different outside the public eye, Billie is quiet, Mike is loud and funny amd Tré is crazy (okay, you're right about that) but he can be serious, according to Aaron.

I've had the incredible luck of meeting Tre with no one else around at a hotel during the 21CB tour. Granted, this was a fan-meets-band member moment, so it's not like he was acting the same as if he were talking to an old friend or family member, but he didn't have his guard up the same way he does in interviews or in group settings. I can say that he was certainly every bit of the space shot that you'd expect- relatively friendly, swearing like a sailor in casual conversation, and both clueless and very ADD in a friendly way. He was very willing to chat but didn't stay on any given subject for more than 10 seconds without shifting gears. I guess he could probably best be described as eccentric, as his personality was far different than that of most people you'd meet.

I've also chatted with Jason, who was completely down to Earth, articulate, thoughtful, and normal (normal in the fact that he had no pretense about himself whatsoever), and Mike, who was guarded, quiet/ introspective, and far less gregarious than I had assumed. Granted, these are all quick snapshots of people- it's impossible to make a full judgement on someone based on a quick meeting- but these are the impressions that I took from meeting them.

I know these aren't unpopular opinions or anything, but I just wanted to add my experience to the conversation about Tre's persona.

I'm not in this boat, but does anyone prefer Kerplunk's Welcome to Paradise over Dookie's version?

Thanks for your perspective :) It's certainly interesting. Tre is obviously an eccentric guy, not limited to his public persona. Even Billie has talked about it, he's not like most people. That's why I crave learning more about him... he's so... intriguing.

And I NEVER would have assumed Mike to be "gregarious" as you put it  He seems kinda on the defensive. It's not a bad thing. I feel like the personality we see in Cuatro is more what I imagine Mike to be like... kinda in a bad mood because he just genuinely cares about everything all the time. He seems pretty sensitive.

To reiterate, I'm not trying to assume I know these guys or make grand sweeping judgments about them as people.

Absolutely! The original version captures the feeling of the lyrics about leaving home to live in a warehouse full of punks SO much better - no surprise as it was recorded when they were still experiencing what the lyrics described. The emotion comes across so much more genuinely. I prefer the charmingly rough and ready original version any day, no interest in listening to the cleaned up Dookie one unless I'm listening to Dookie all the way through. Plus the Kerplunk version has awesome spooky noises in it!

Good points. I feel that GD has pretty obviously gone for the Dookie version due to its success. I bet a third to a half of all the "fans" at the average Green Day concert don't even know it was on Kerplunk.

Then again, maybe I'm not giving them enough credit...

I prefer the Dookie one. The original version on Kerplunk always struck me as more...rushed? I'm not sure if that's the right phrase. To me it stands out as being sloppier than the rest of the songs on that album, whilst on Dookie it's really tight and punchy; you can tell that the song had been rehearsed a lot more. Not to mention that the opening Eb on the Dookie version is pretty much guitar tone heaven.

Might just be that Green Day prefer the Dookie version, I'm assuming they wouldn't have put it on there if they didn't think it was an improvement. I think I've read an interview where Mike was saying they made it sound stronger or tighter or something, seemed like he thought it was better. Makes sense that the band and a lot of people would prefer the more technically accomplished version. I prefer the Kerplunk one with it's little imperfections though, just fits the song better.

I've always thought of Kerplunk as having the quirkiest songs lyrically and instrumentally of any GD album, so it definitely fits in with that vibe. Dookie may be thought if as extremely "punk" and rough aesthetically by some people, but the crisp sounds of the guitar and bass guitar and the peppy thuds from the drums are a shock to the system when I've just been listening to Kerplunk.

Green Day, or Billie in particular, seem to play their best songs acoustic in radio sessions.. -__-

Especially the extras from 1039/Smoothed Out Slappy Hours (live from WMMR). Paper Lanterns sounds amazing!

Uf I can't decide what version of WTP is better, I like them both!

Judging by the setlists from all the U.S. shows so far, yes, they have dropped it from the encore. I know, man, it's tragic. But not many people on here seem to care :ermm:

I think is the better song to close the show... :S

Yeah, of course it's all Mike during his parts; Modern World, Nobody Likes You, "I don't wanna be an imbecile...", and so on and so on. And knowing how his voice sounds from that futher convinces me that he does not do the harmonies on the records. I've really been digging into this for a while now, trying to listen to the tracks in different ways, and trying to bring out or isolate the harmonies, and I'm convinced it's all Billie Joe, from At The Library to The Forgotten 99 Revolutions (there is no harmonies in The Forgotten, haha).

I'm convinced too. Billie Joe do all the armonies in the albums.

Uno, Dos and Tre were terrible albums and GD's worst work to date. There were about 4 good songs and no excellent songs in the whole trilogy.

Tre is a super boring drummer. I actually don't know how he has gone this long and is still interested in playing his instrument.

I can't believe what I'm reading...Tré a boring drummer. I think it's awesome, he reminds me to Keith Moon.

Well, and I just love the trilogy...

I find Mike more boring as a bassist...

I have a question: What do you think about the popular opinion that Green Day is NOT a punk rock band?? I'm bored about this point that I don't discuss it anymore with anybody. "Power pop, or rock, not punk rock!!" Maybe in some songs, buit in general they are! Everybody thinks what they want. But it fucks me a lot.
