Cob
No, and good job too. Green Day don't do good political music, by and large. They peaked at Minority and Macy's Day Parade - which is more of a social commentary. Billie doesn't know how to write put over a political message without it being a bit muddled and not all that convincing. I don't doubt those guys were sincere in their political values, but they've known since Dookie made them millionaires that they can't convincingly play the part of speaking on behalf of punks. Fuck, they've called shit on the punk scene since 1993. They know it's balls. I think it is appropriate for this thread to say I think Green Day are a shit political band, but one of the best bands that write about love, emotional turmoil and personal struggles that there has ever been. Nah. "American Idiot" is a fantastic political song. As is "21st Century Breakdown", "Know Your Enemy", "East Jesus Nowhere", "Holiday", "American Eulogy", etc. The best political songs are the ones that humanize issues, not just "Fuck the government; peace for the kids." I really don't understand your response. I was agreeing with you. I'm not quite sure what you're talking about anymore. All I said was Green Day aren't brilliant at political music and other bands have written more political material than they have.

Cob
On the subject of political songs, I think "99 Revolutions" is one of the bands best political songs. Everyone is always bitching about the chorus, but because of that "don't bore us; get to the chorus" mentality they're missing out on some of Billie Joe's best verses ever. "Good people are out of work and struggling and something has to be done about it." What more needs to be said? It's also a damn good tour name. Lauren
21 Guns would have been a great song if it wasn't ten hours long. How many verses can you keep adding?!?! Homecoming/JOS/American Eulogy, etc. are different because they change parts, so they're really multiple songs just under one track. but 21 guns is long and annoying. I would've liked it a lot better if it was under 3 minutes.

Lauren
Isn't there a radio edit? I don't know... I don't listen to the radio. Mmm...not quite sure I agree with you there. Cob pointed some 'good' political songs they've recorded and he's right. Yes, there are bands out there who were more political than Green Day from the very beginning of their careers. Yes, Green Day have only dropped three albums containing some political songs. However, Billie Joe's lyrical strength lies not in the fact that he writes about political themes in great detail or in regards to a specific left wing/anarachist etc mentality, but in that he humanises big themes: something which you rightly said he's very good at doing with issues in general. Songs like American Idiot, 21st Century Breakdown, Minority, Macy's... are all very personal while still having an important message and that is what makes them unique. localinsomniac
Techno, as in 'pop' music, using computers, not techno as in lasers and stuff. but still, Kill The DJ would be better if it wasn't a 'pop' dance song, I know that's what they were trying to do with it, but I don't like it. lol, AI is just, too political, it's not how they were. the point I'm making is, they've changed from the little stoner kids who never had a date, to grown up guys who care about out government and other political views, I can't relate to it as much.. Most music is recorded in ProTools nowadays; it's all done through computers. Not as many artists are still recording analog, so I'm not sure the 'techno' label applies here. Sure, American Idiot had very political themes. But at that point in their careers, that's who they were. A lot of other people have said it already but it's worth repeating- in general, people mature with age. Green Day's music matured accordingly. I was 21 when the album came out, and found a TON of things I could relate to: struggles with identity; resentment towards the then-current government; disenfranchisement; lost love. For all the political tones, AI is a pretty accessible album, lyrically.I don't think Carpe Diem gets enough appreciation I fucking love it. I think its one of the best off Uno! Then I think See the Light is brilliant too and people don't seem to agree with that either.. Always thought See the Light was a great closer. Imgettingre-wired
I'm from near Nottingham too Andrew so which village is boring out of interest? These might not be necessary unpopular but here goes.. I think Suffocate should have been on insomniac or Nimrod maybe in place of Take Back. KILL THE DJ is a great song but too repetative at the end. I usually skip near the end.

HolyHandGrenade
True, but how can you say it's better than something like Stuck With Me or 86? Because it's subjective. If it was objective, I'd still have DRB in the top 5, but I'd probably put Stuart and the Ave. 1st

Unholy Sister of Grace
American Idiot and 21st Century Breakdown were both political obviously, but I understood the political aspect of 21CB much better than with AI. Of course, I was a bit older with 21CB and when I got AI I was quite ignorant of politics at the time, but to me 21CB is much more political than AI. The lyrics were more obviously political whereas in AI the lyrics were about politics, but in a more cryptic way. In all honesty, I didn't understand AI that much until very recently when the clip from Heart Like a Hand Grenade was posted for a Throwback Thursday. When Mike used the word "disenfranchised" it's like AI made complete sense to me all of a sudden...weird, huh? Uno has grown on me, and Dos has fallen away a little bit. Lyrically Uno is different from their other albums, but still very Green Day. On Dos the music rocks, but the lyrics have troubled me as of late. Probably with the insight from the RS interview. "American Idiot" and "Holiday" are both much more incisive and political in their lyrics.
