Unpopular Green Day Opinions

I prefer 21st Century Breakdown to American Idiot

This is probably the most unpopular opinion I've read so far in this thread. Can't say I agree, but kudos for being brave enough to say that.

I don't think it's that brave haha, I prefer 21st CB too. Not everyone sees American Idiot as an "untouchable" album (just like not everyone sees Dookie that way). Maybe that's an unpopular opinion in itself, that all their albums have their merits so picking any of them as a favourite doesn't seem unusual.

I think Green Day reached perfection between Insomniac and Shenanigans. Those albums probably lead my top 10 along with ¡Dos!.

You must be crazy to think Dos is anywhere near American Idiot..

I'm just here to say that Roshambo by The Network is a fucking great song. I wish they performed it as Green Day...

If it was under the Green Day label, it would be a top ten song.

Fantastic song. Everything about it. Probably the most haunting Billie has ever been.

I like Nightlife. Panic Song is amazing. I don't really like the first two albums.

Dookie isn't the best they've done. I'd say Shenanigans is my favourite album even though it really isn't.

Shenanigans > trilogy tbh

This. Exactly this a thousand times. Also I think the moaning in the background is really effective and eerie.

I'm not sure whatsername is a good closing song. I suppose it's alright, but when Billie sings 'remember, whatever' over and over again, I cringe. Some of the lyrics on American Idiot were absolutely class, but that particular line is so inane it almost ruins everything.

I would argue that it is significant to the song. In just two words, it sums up everything that is going on in his head. Half of Jesus wants to recall the past and figure out how that period of time fits into his life - "Remember". His other opinion is to just forget it ever happened and move on with his life - "Whatever / It seems like forever ago" All of this leads up to his final decision - "I'll never turn back time / Forgetting you but not the time" Those two words, remember and whatever, are the entire premise of the song.

I love Whatsername, the "And in the darkest night..." bit is the perfect way to end the album.

I don't like Hitchin' A Ride and I can't wait for it to be over when they play it live.

I guess the contrast IS clever when you look into it, but on the surface of it, it seems as if Billie didn't know how else to put across the right sentiment, and ended up settling for something as nondescript as 'whatever'.

The production on American Idiot (the song) is perfect. Really. The 'muting' (or whatever it's called) on the guitars and Billie's voice is really effective. The whole sound is aggressive and powerful, yet simultaneously easy on the ears.

The same goes for the entire album, actually. Almost anything they'd recorded before or have written after doesn't pack the same punch (although it's still very good) because the production is either non existent or too clean.

I think "whatever" and other examples like "I Don't Care" are simple and non-poetic for a reason. They are the raw feelings at that point in time - no fluff, no embellishment for lyrics sake. One of the strong suits of AI was that it spoke to many people by showing those sentiments explicitly, not implicitly, or something that requires a few seconds' translation.

Whatsername is easily a top 5 Green Day song ever, and hands down my favorite closer on any album.

I agree about American Idiot's production, I think it's perfect. But I don't think every one of their albums should sound just like it.

And yeah, I think Whatsername is the perfect closing track, and one of my favorite GD songs.

Exactly this.

I don't think the cast album for the musical needed to happen. Sure, there were some different arrangements and key changes. And the singing is phenomenal, but it's essentially a re-recording. If they were going to do that, I wish they would it do with Kerplunk!.

I think both instrumental songs: Last Ride In and Espionage are pretty awesome. I love them and I never get tired of listening them.

I don't think the Pre- AI albums should have sounded like it necessarily, because the basic production still sounded quite fresh and suited the style of music they were playing at the time even if it wasn't perfect. I would turned down the production on the later albums a notch though, especially the trilogy. 21CB would stay as it is because the big production actually suits how 'flamboyant' the songs are. Plus, I have a soft spot for it anyway.

The AI vs 21st cant call it I will say I didnt like the full album of AI til last year dunno why

Where as 21st i loved on first listen (save for Horseshoes & Gernades and Christin's Inferno)

And trilogy production isnt over produced music wise vocal wise thats how Billie wanted (least at the time) i hope the next record has the same or something close to it i loved the trilogy production personally
