agreed

and nobody has stopped to think that maybe it's jason's option to not appear as much as the rest of the band

Exactly, Jason hates the limelight, he's always taken the backseat on this sort of thing.

I know I'm going to get rocks thrown for this, but thankfully my house isn't made of glass. Yeah try breaking 5mm of Perspex with a brick; I don't think so. ;-)

I'm sick of people labelling things punk, or what isn't punk. A dress sense doesn't make you a punk. Piercing a or tattoos do not make a punk. Anti-establishment behaviour doesn't make a punk. What makes a punk is their ideal, a rage, an feeling towards something that needs change. A need to change things or show they aren't happy with what they see, or need to change things for the better, and do something. They hate being trapped in the corner and they express themselves in the medium of their choice, whether it's music, art, or another form of expression.

Green Day is punk, AND WILL ALWAYS BE PUNK TO ME, because they're expressing their values and themselves in their own way. Sure, they sound different but that doesn't mean their message isn't a punk expression. If you don't think so, I don't mind, but I find it pretty sad when punk is labelled to a style rather than an idea. Punk is a philosophy, or philosophies, not just a form art.

It's like some people act that GD's music has been affected by him becoming a member

This exactly. And if it did, Jason's input would only help the band. His work with Pinhead Gunpowder and The Big Cats is incredible.

I don't think Green Day are punk...... i think they're pretty much the most Indonesian Speed metal band going right now though! Not sure if this is an Unpopular Opinion though!?

No. The worst thing ever would have been a collab with Bieber, 1D or Nicki Minaj. Lady Cobra sounds much better and I think it fits the song. If you wanna be entitled to 'rap sucks' then go on, but Nightlife is an amazing cross between rock and rap and I am very happy they've done it. Also adds a lot to the whole album, giving it more diversity and making it sounds much more different and experimental. In my opinion it was a genius idea to cross both genres. I don't really mind rap, but this song is catchy, dance-able and simply mindblowing.

I didn't say "rap sucks" Rap needs talent and such, but I just don't like it.. i'm my ears, rap isn't music.. And I don't like the effect over Billie's voice.. so...

From that analogy Lady Gaga is punk, though. We're talking about it in terms of what's generally accepted as a music genre. Looking at it like that could mean that lots of artists from loads of different genres are punks, but that doesn't necessarily mean that they make punk music which I don't believe Green Day completely do.

In my opinion, anyone can be punk. Granted what I said can lead to what you're saying here, that doesn't stop me from thinking that Lady GaGa is an overrated ******************************************************************, if I can be allowed to say that here.

I just threw that opinion in there as for many years I've been sick of Punk being put down to a particular label; punk should be a freedom, not a segment of society that gets frowned upon, nor just a fashion sense.

Call green day alternative, pop or whatever. In the end, they will always remain punk.Even Metallica has some accoustic songs. That does not make them a Blues gentre.

It's like some people act that GD's music has been affected by him becoming a member

It kind of is.But for the better. Now there is an additional guitar sound to the music, which was not there in the earler albums.

I disagree. Punk rock originated as a style of music and the culture and fashion sense was developed as a result of the music. Punk rock was first and foremost a music genre. Most punks do have that "Fuck you this is what I believe in" attitude but that doesn't make something punk, necessarily. I describe Green Day as being punks, individually. Mike is a punk. Billie is a punk. Tre is a punk. The music that they make now, however, in my eyes is not punk. Green Day right now is not punk because they don't make the punk music, which is what the culture/dress is, essentially, all about.

Of course, I'm not going to step over your views and call you an asshole. You can describe them as punk if you want, it's not really my place. But, in my mind, if you compare the trilogy to original punk artists such as The Ramones, The Dead Boys, The Sex Pistols, etc. you will see some influence, definitely, because that's who the members of Green Day idolized when they were growing up, but as a whole it doesn't resemble punk music.

It's like some people act that GD's music has been affected by him becoming a member

Which might be true. However, I don't believe that's a bad thing...

I never really cared for Longview or Brain Stew. The trilogy would have been successful with proper promotion. Stray Heart would have been a big hit if it had gotten radio play.

I want them to "get rid of" Jeff Matika and don't have any extra backing-vocals guy live at all. Because I don't think it's needed and it looks silly.

Even though if he's a great backing-vocalist it can't add that much, it's one voice out of five. It's the same thing when he plays guitar, I don't feel that's it's obliged to have three guitars on any song, two is enough and on those few songs where Billie doesn't play guitar one is enough.
And I suppose the big reason for me thinking this, it looks silly with him standing in the background not having anything to do in most parts of the songs and moving along to the music. This being the most obvious example:
Just look at him, it's so awkward! ;)

Seeing Billie Joe on the Voice was honestly the closest I ever came to burning all my Green Day CDs and merchandise.

I'm not being butthurt, or calling it a 'sellout' or 'unpunk' move. It's just I've always despised those kind of talent shows and the way individuals like Simon Cowell only look for people they can make money out of. To see my musical hero get involved in that...felt massively disappointing.

Yeah that goes for many songs. You can see that he plays something but it's impossible hear it. I do hear the organ at times though in this video, most noticeable at the end right after the last chorus. But he has more of a function than Matika in the band live so they should definitely keep him ;)

yeah, I quite agree for Jeff Matika, on every live video of Green Day i see he's always like dancing in the back doing nothing  don't know if he likes it or if he finds that boring but i don't know, even for him, he could do things more...usefull.

And I don't know if this is really unpopular but I really prefer the Network to the Foxboro Hottubs.

Interesting...how do you view them, then?

On a separate note, I've tried as hard as I can to enjoy Amy, but it is a really underwhelming and boring song. The lyrics during the verses are well written, but the chorus is just poor.

They have played punk rock in the first part of their career and then their sound evolved to alternative rock

It's that exact thing that worries me. I hate The Big Cats and Pinhead. I don't listen to them at all because I have Green Day, but if he comes in and starts pushing that in there too much I'll be very disappointed.

You disappoint me Sensei. Shoot The Moon is a fantastic EP, especially the songs that Jason sings like "Cabot Gal" and "Aching to Be." And The Ancient Art of Leaving (both parts) are amazing.

To each their own, I guess.

When I see Green Day live I don't notice that Jeff Matika exists (like, I literally haven't ever seen him as far as I'm aware, he must have been hidden behind something out of my view at all the shows I've been to). However, I love how Green Day sound when I see them live! Therefore whatever he's adding is good stuff, so keep him I say!
