joeysturkeyhead
I don't get why people on here seem to hate rap so much, I really like the rap in Nightlife. What is so wrong with rap? I listen quiet a bit to Beastie Boys, Walk This Way by Run DMC feat. Aerosmith and Rapper's Delight are really awesome songs. Also Eminem is a really good rapper and he writes good lyrics, though I don't like his music very much, of the songs I've heard atleast. What really pisses me of is when people call rap artists sellouts and all that stuff and say that rap isn't real music and that there's no talent in it. Alot of rap artists nowadays are auto-tuned sellouts (I really hate that expresion), not all of them, though.
Heather.
According to Aaron Cometbus, Mike isn't anywhere near as serious in private as he is in public. He describes Mike as funny and loud, Billie is the quiet one and Tré crashes cars and does alot of weird stuff... Yep, still consistent with how I see them. The one thing that is abundantly clear is that Mike is the most high-strung and probably talks the most behind the scenes. That was coming out a lot in Cuatro. The Snark
I love the Last of the American Girls video. I can only listen to the Broadway version of Know Your Enemy. The chorus of Christian's Inferno is way too upbeat for the rest of the song. It just doesn't fit well. As a general age, I really don't think 40 is old, but can you really imagine them being near 50 and making music like they are now, seriously? I don't want to live in a bubble where people say "Green Day will never die and will always make music", they have to stop somewhere, they're not frickin' robots. I don't think that 50 will be their stopping point. 60-70 perhaps. Although I can totally picture Billie scooting around onstage with a walker. Hermione
Public Enemy are considered hip-hop, just so y'know I quite like hip-hop, usually for it's political undertones, rather than the consumerist bullshit that makes up a lot of rap songs. Rap isn't a bad word , Public Enemy are a rap group. Hip hop is the culture that consists of DJing, breakdancing, graffiti and rapping. You can call the music part rap music or hip hop music. Calling completely shite rap music hip hop would be a bit wrong because it implies that it's part of the wider culture and original ideals of hip hop when it isn't, but you can call the music of a proper hip hop artist hip hop or rap and both are correct. I love rap music and it makes me extremely happy that Green Day have experimented with it so successfully (unpopular opinion!). I think they got it just right with Nightlife, the sultry sounding verses are just the right amount of "rappiness" without going too far and sounding silly, Billie's drawled chorus compliments them nicely, and I love that they put that old school sounding beat in at the end. I was excited enough to hear all the quoted/stolen lines from old gangsta rap songs in Like A Rat Does Cheese, so for them to go all the way and make a full blown rap song is a wish come true for me. I was just being technical, Public Enemy are classed as hip hop group because rap didn't really exist back then And I didn't mean to imply that all rap is shit. There's just a fair chunk of it that fits that description
ChelseaDagger
Does anyone DISLIKE Jesus Of Suburbia? THAT would be a very unpopular opinion....... I love JOS, I'm just curious if there's anyone out there who actually dislikes it for whatever reason.

I love JOS, I'm just curious if there's anyone out there who actually dislikes it for whatever reason. I don't dislike it, but I think I've heard it too many times that I find it a little bit boring now... it's even one of my least favourite songs off AI with American Idiot and St. Jimmy... but I don't really dislike it. Well, it's just my opinion...

Hermione
There must be a fair number of people who are massive fans of older Green Day music and don't like anything on American Idiot including JOS. But I guess they'd be unlikely to be hanging around on GD fansite. I was just being technical, Public Enemy are classed as hip hop group because rap didn't really exist back then And I didn't mean to imply that all rap is shit. There's just a fair chunk of it that fits that description Yeah I suppose it is the more accurate description, I don't think it'd bother them to be called rap though. And don't worry I didn't think you were saying all rap is shit I was just defending the word, I agree about that chunk of it

Kerplunk!!!
If the Sweet Children ep songs had been recorded for 21CB alot of it's haters here would probably be calling it a brilliant piece of musical art. I really don't get the hate, Best thing in town is such a good song with one of the coolest solos Billie has ever done!

I really don't get the hate, Best thing in town is such a good song with one of the coolest solos Billie has ever done! I doubt it , the style is completely different so they would've sounded ridiculous on 21st CB. I haven't really seen "hate" for them here, just a lot of people that don't consider them their best work. It's their simplicity and rough and ready-ness that gives them their charm, but those things don't appeal that much to everyone so I can see why they're not on many people's lists of favourites. I don't think it's that surprising that out of all Green Day's work, some old songs they wrote when they were about 14 that they only recorded because they happened to find themselves with some extra studio time so they thought they might as well quickly record them since they never had before, that have the worst sound quality of any of their studio recordings, aren't the most popular. What's in a name
I'll be honest, once in a while, I hope that the next album that gets dropped is along the lines of shenanigans. Just a bunch of unheard B-sides that they want to get out there. Shenanigans has this charm to it, or atleast it feels like that for me anyway. Eva
if you talk about the music green day was as much punk as it gets. punk is a wide spectrum. you told people to listen to other punk bands from gilman street. well then i tell you to listen to the to the clash, to the adicts, to the boys... green day had much of that early uk punk style. punk doesn't mean to scream and play as fast as you can, you know... a 15 yo tries to explain what punk is... You are telling me to listen to old punk bands? I really don't think you know who you're talking to. That is the punk I listen to. I'm comparing Green Day with the punk of their time, in their scene. Not the punk before them, after them, or in another part of the country or world. I'm comparing them to the 1980s, California, Berkeley, 924 Gilman punk rock scene. Not the CBGBs scene. Not the London scene of the 1970s. California. 1980s. Gilman Street. I'm really not sure what the hell my age has to do how valid my opinions on punk rock are. I listen to it. I read books on it. I'm involved in my local scene. I know what I'm talking about for the most part. Not everything, of course, I'm not the punk God. But I know punk rock better than some others out there. Green Day is not as punk as it gets. They are pop-punk. They have the attitude of punks. But only a few of their songs (minus Insomniac. The whole album was punk) were actually punk music, according to their scene, in their decade. I'm done with this conversation. Green Day's state of punk only makes people mad and this gets us nowhere. However, I am extremely disappointed that the fact I am 15 determines my reliability according to my favorite genre of music. Good day to you all.
Billie Joe's Pants
The beginning of Extrordinary Girl. It's like jungle/tropical/safari shit. WHY DID YOU DO THIS, GREEN DAY? Also, I like Kerplunk's Welcome to Paradise better than Dookie's.
Akshat
Actually I think the most underrated album is Insomniac, in general people really like Nimrod... Insomniac is also a really good album.I find it better than Dookie. But overall, I would prefer Nimrod, looking at the variety that album has. It's such a diverse album. From fast punk songs like Take Back to an accoustic ballad like Time of Your Life.Even though it debuted at #10 on Billboard, it stayed on charts for more than 70 weeks, way more than 21cb, warning or insomniac. Green Day in 90s-Underrated Green Day in 2000s-Overrated. I am sorry this is just my opinion Does anyone DISLIKE Jesus Of Suburbia? THAT would be a very unpopular opinion....... I love JOS, I'm just curious if there's anyone out there who actually dislikes it for whatever reason. It's the only 9 minute song I have heard that is not boring.
