Gwen Stacy
First of all, yes! EJN is, in my opinion, the best Green Day song from the "new Green Day." The political implications that Billie put in to the lyrics are just absolutely fucking amazing. On top of the lyrics, the instrumentals are just good. Second, you wanna know why Green Day and Tim Yohannan never got along? Because Tim created 924 Gilman, a punk rock hangout/venue and Green Day, a band that was pop-rock, showed up. They have the attitude. I will give them that. Green Day have the punk attitude. But musically? No. It's never been there, really. Insomniac, Dookie, Kerplunk, etc. are only, in my opinion (don't tear me apart) called punk by a lot of GD fans because they haven't heard the other Gilman or California bands that were around in the 1980s with GD. And people I've met who do listen to those bands agree with me in saying that GD's never been true punk. Green Day's about as punk as Avril Lavigne at this point. Not to be rude but...yeah. I'm sick of the eyeliner too. When did that even start? and why did they keep doing it... Maybe not compared to the hardest-core of punk that was around in the 80's and the 90's, but Insomniac is pretty far punk on the pop/punk spectrum. Songs like Armatage Shanks, Stuck With Me, 86, and Tightwad Hill are heavily punk. And the eyeliner started back in 924 as a way to pick up girls and it serves the same function that the black stuff under football players eyes to help shield against bright lights. Many people see it as Green Day changing their image during the AI era, but it's a shitty point if you know about the band's history.

As a whole though, I don't believe their career leading up to that point was as punk as it's made out to be sometimes. They do have songs that are extremely punk or punk-influenced. I don't remember the eyeliner being around back in the Dookie/Insomniac/Nimrod days? Of course, I don't watch a lot of videos so maybe I just missed it. Did they stop it for a while and then start up again or what?

Cob
Green Day fits in perfectly with their Gilman peers. Every band in that scene was unique, the main difference was that GD was never concerned with playing a hardcore beat (and they weren't the only one's, I might add). They wanted to play Ramones and Sex Pistols punk, not Black Flag punk. Tim Yohannan didn't like them because they were melodic, but apparently nobody ever told him that the earliest punk bands were melodic too. And all the bands around GD (when they started and as they matured) were melodic too, whether it be NOFX, Operation Ivy, Rancid, Screeching Weasel, Bad Religion, The Descendents, Fifteen, Crimpshrine, Lagwagon, Isocracy, MTX, No Use For A Name, etc. Tim also didn't like the fact that GD put musicianship before bullshit punk politics, but the best bands always did this and that's why they've lasted longer than a year. Well in the wider media, they are treated as punk because most people don't know what pure punk is so they're a popular shorthand for punk. Now, just because something isn't punk, doesn't mean it's necessarily not as good, it just is what it is, whether that's good or not. During those years, it was mostly stage-eyeliner that wasn't black so it blended in a bit more. I think they didn't do it for a lot of the Warning years for some reason, couldn't tell you why though. I never said Green Day aren't good. I'm on a Green Day website. I don't mean to come off as a dick if that's what's happening. I just disagree with their label as a punk band in any shape or form. They can make punk songs, of course but I wouldn't classify the band as punk. And I love Green Day. I love punk rock. I'm not one of the asshole punk elitists that refuses to listen to a band if they don't smoke weed and write about burning down the White House. As for eyeliner, that's what I thought. It seemed to disappear for a while. I didn't know they wore it in the Gilman days though.

Unholy Sister of Grace
I was never really sure of what opinions were unpopular regarding Green Day, thanks to this thread I realize a few. But for now I'm just going to put my opinions that I can easily see people agreeing with. ~I love Lady Cobra (the song). I'm bummed that it's so short, but it would get annoying if it was any longer, if that makes sense. It's so rock-and-roll and I have interesting feelings toward the backing vocals (by interesting I mean possibly potentially sexual ones). ~American Idiot will always be their best album. Yes, Dookie is what made them famous, but AI is music in its purest form - audible art. ~Billie has a good voice, but it's not great by my definition. The times I've heard any of their more ballad songs live, his voice doesn't reach it, and it leads me to believe his voice is editted on the albums (I know they are somewhat, but disappointment abounds when your hear shitty vocals live after hearing angels on the album). ~I used to think Billie was the most attractive, and indeed I still think he is attractive, but as I have been maturing in my mind and in my tastes Mike has become the most attractive one. He's got one hell of a body (how would you even say that in a way that doesn't sound rude? I can't figure it out), his facial features are so masculine, and his eyes are such bliss. Blonde Mikey is my favorite and I enjoyed his long hair. His voice is spectacular and I think I would like to hear him sing the lead on some Green Day songs. I'd really be curious to hear him sing songs that are fronted by a woman (e.g. Florence +the Machine...no idea why). ~I don't really pay attention to John's drumming, I rarely listen to the early-early stuff, but Tre is a badass drummer and that's not even an unpopular opinion, it's just mine. ~Eyeliner is <333 so whatevs man. It's just hot. On Billie mostly, though. Tre as well, Mike never oh Gawd please. ~As far as them wearing the black hair, makeup, tight clothes, etc., I like that look and it suits their personalities. They're all fairy-tale princesses and I must rescue them from their despair... (No idea how I came up with that, but I'm keeping it) There you have it. Heather.
I don't know if this is unpopular or secret common knowledge, but it's pretty clear to me that Tre is the smartest member of the band and Billie is the dumbest, and I love them both for it

Ham Pascale
1. Dos is the best album in trilogy, and trilogy a way better than AI and 21CB. 2. Basket Case is overrated 3. I Want To Be On TV and Eye Of The Tiger is the best cover song 4. I don't get why Billie hates Lynyrd Skynyrd 5. Oh Love is great song 6. Billie Joe isn't good-looking man. Especially with guyliner 7. I can't stand 1000 Hours off 1039SOSH 8. GD should keep Warning era look during AI era 9. Billie's newer voice doesn't suits at all with old songs like 2000 Light Years Away, Geek Stink Breath
Gwakington
21st Century Breakdown is Overproduced and the trilogy isn't. Examples:Horseshoes and Handgrenades: OH shit, we already have 4 guitar tracks before the verse.. lets double it during the chorus to make it sound bigger! Oh Love: No more than three guitar tracks during whole song. I don't like either song too much, but I like that they didn't layer the fuck out of the guitar tracks on the trilogy. Green Day should have released the Foxboro Hottubs album "Stop, Drop & Roll" under the Green Day band name, but were too chickenshit to do so. Didn't Tim have a problem with even NOFX? Is that what the song It's My Job To Keep Punk Rock Elite is about? If it is, i am going to love that song all the more. ~I used to think Billie was the most attractive, and indeed I still think he is attractive, but as I have been maturing in my mind and in my tastes Mike has become the most attractive one. And yes, he needs to sing lead on a few songs. This has to happen.
