Unpopular Green Day Opinions

If Nightlife was ever played live I would die of embarrassment

Those poor casual fans who haven't heard the trilogy yet  They'd just walk out of the arena during that one

Good Lord, NO. It is in my opinion, the shittiest song in the trilogy, joint with Walk Away and The Forgotten. It's so bland and generic and...soulless. I always thought Green Day were the antithesis of soulless.

It's a song about yearning, and emotionally it nails that emotion. It took a while, but eventually I got it and the song is amazing to me now.

I think it's fine in the context of Uno, but as a lead single it was a horrible decision. So many better candidates to represent the trilogy

You see, I disagree about it conveying yearning effectively; the lyrics are just a bit vague for my liking.

The point is that the lyrics are vague? Maybe you've listened to it enough times to decipher a solid, convincing interpretation, but it will always remain a song that really means nothing to me.

Let me break it down:

The lyrics speak of universal emotions (maybe more common to men than women, but still). Yearning in both love and life. It's also a great sentiment to Billie's emotions. "I can't be satisfied" and other lyrics are basically spoon-feeding this idea of yearning. Yes it is a slow, mundane song, but that's the point. The feel you get from the song never "satisfies" so to speak. Most verses build up to a release in the chorus. "Oh Love" gets close to that release, but still lacks full emotional relaxation. It's perfect, but it's a major grower.

That's such a complicated way of looking at it, though. Good music should make you think, but I believe you should also be able to feel it, without developing all these convoluted explanations.

Green Day have written songs about yearning before that feel much more immediate and accessible. What about The One I Want or Blood, Sex and Booze. I'm not suggesting that Billie Joe continues writing about teenage crushes or bondage, just that he's a better a lyricist when he's more direct in his approach. Some songwriters excel amongst a midst of metaphors, he thrives while keeping things relatively simple, but still poignant. Oh Love is an example of him getting lost in his words.

I think Oh Love has lyrics that do their job. I don't see him getting lost at all. It's ok though. You fail to see the intelligence and power behind the song, and I recognize that it is good. Agree to disagree.

I honestly really love Dry Ice.

I don't really understand what so many people have against it. I mean, yeah, it's a pretty sappy love song and all, but you can tell it's really heartfelt and the emotion in Billie's voice is stunning.

The guitar solo is also totally badass.

This might not apply if you hate it :P, but it's surprisingly good live. It's just an average song on the Trilogy for me and I was expecting it to be one of the duller and not so memorable songs on the setlist when I went to see them, but it's really good for a swaying singalong . Something about the rhythm of it makes it really enjoyable when you're in the crowd.

Seconded. In terms of non-singles popularity of AI, Whatsername is #1.

Letterbomb is #2, st.jimmy #3 and then comes she's a rebel

Actually I would say in terms of non-singles popularity from American Idiot it goes:

1. Homecoming

2. Letterbomb

3. St. Jimmy

4. Whatsername

5. Novacaine

6. She's a Rebel

Not the order I'd put them in, by the way.

I've been listening to a lot of early Green Day recently, and I've come to the conclusion that Dookie and Insomniac, while solid records, come across as a little...forced. There is material on Kerplunk that is far more genuinely aggressive than anything on Insomniac.

really? I feel like insomniac has a " right I don't give a shit anymore kinda attitude

agh something went really wrong with that quote sorry

Except for X Kid live. That reeeeeeeally doesn't work.

I agree and I couldn't figure out why. The studio version was a tad too slow for me. So I expected it to be killer live just like Stay the Night. Nope, even when I was there. Just didn't work

I'd rather have Missing You stay a regular for a (relatively) slower trilogy song.

And Nuclear Family for KYE as well... add Murder City or 21CB somewhere else please!

That sounds so condescending

It's like Adam Savage from the Mythbusters:

"I reject your reality and substitute my own!"

I like some of the lyrics in Oh Love, Nuclear Family should've been the lead single though. Walk Away is decent. The Forgotten puts me to freaking sleep. But A little boy named train, Nightlife, Baby Eyes, Sex Drugs and Violence, IMO are far better candidates for worst song of trilogy

Oh Love is a strange one. I don't really like it that much on record, but it really works as a live song. It's the perfect sing a long kind of track when you're actually there. The part where the crowd sing 'Won't you rain on me tonight' is really cool to hear live.

As for other set suggestions, I personally wouldn't open with 99 Revs (even though it's a great song, and the tour is named after it). I see it more as a closer to send the audience home buzzing. Nuclear Family would be a good way to kick things off, or perhaps Let Yourself Go. Brutal Love is a fantastic song live, but I don't know if it should be closing the show. Maybe the first song of the encore, followed by American Idiot and then 99 Revs.

My only other pet peeve set list wise, is that there isn't enough Insomniac for my liking. They've done away with Brain Stew/Jaded so why not throw in Stuck With Me or Westbound Sign or something. I guess the casual fans wouldn't really know the songs though. It must be really difficult to come up with a set list, you have to get the balance right considering there will be people in the audience who aren't familiar with the non singles, or anything that pre-dates Dookie.

The Forgotten is awful. It reminds me too much of Coldplay. I admire their balls to try something like that though. I don't mind ALBNT so much, but I wouldn't want to hear it live. Nightlife is horrific, Baby Eyes is alright, Sex Drugs and Violence is quite fun to listen to, but the lyrics are a little weak.

Trilogy songs I'd love to see live would be Amanda, Ashley and Wow That's Loud. Very upbeat, and guaranteed to lift the crowd after a couple of the slower songs.

I love The Forgotten, it's such a beautiful song

I will say that it can be a bit plodding sometimes (I'll listen to it one day and find it beautiful, but I'll listen to it another and it'll seem really dragging) and I kind of hate the way the piano sounds at the beginning (like a little kid banging on the keys) but overall, I do like it a lot.

Sure The Forgotten is supposed to be this beautiful ballad. But what the heck is it really about?? "Where in the world's the forgotten?" <-----??? That's one of the reasons it isn't good, to me. The lyrics are cheesy
