Cob
The Static Age is one of the best songs on 21stCB in my opinion. I just love that huge arena sound that it has.
Mar
I used to like Static Age, but I strangely dislike it now..... Idk why I don't hate it but I never was the biggest fan of it. I always wished they would have played another song from 21CB on that tour (like Viva La Gloria). I actually think See the Light is underrated. I know it's not the most complicated song, but I fucking love the chorus, especially the chorus going into the bridge (FIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIGHT). It often gives me chills. Asa.
Before the Lobotomy should've been 2 different songs. The intro and outro are beautiful, and the main middle part is good, too, but it ruins the vibe of the song completely for me

See The Light is musically and lyrically one of the most powerful songs on that album. I was incredibly surprised to learn that it is one of GDC's most (apparently) disliked songs. Every Green Day fan I know personally ("in the real world") believes it to be an incredible song and one of Green Day's best. The first time I listened to that album, the two songs that stuck out the most in my mind were 21st Century Breakdown and See The Light. I think it's gained an even more powerful layer of meaning since all the more recent events that Billie has gone through. It's absolutely one of my favorites and I find it to be incredibly underrated, at least on GDC.

Is it a big contrast to the rest of the album; maybe almost too big of a negative to positive switch (compared, say, to Whatsername, which is still a little grim, like a lot of AI), but I still like it. GenesisJames
Alright, sticking with the "See The Light" love... ... It's my favorite song on the album, and one of my favorite Green Day songs.
GenesisJames
viva la gloria has always been my favorite off 21st i remember whenever the album first came out i would just sit in my room and listen to that song on repeat. plus the title track, and horseshoes and handgrenades, and american eulogy, and little girl...i could go on restless heart syndrome was one of my favorites for a long time, i don't like it now nearly as much as i used to but the "you are your own worst enemy, know your enemy" line is so fucking perfect and great, i can't praise it enough. I LOVE Little Girl. Second favorite on the album. And the way he says "know your enemy" in RHS is just pure magic.

I also love how it contrasts to Whatshername. Whatshername ends American Idiot with passion, silence, and regret. See The Light ends 21stCB with passion, noise, and hope. I love it when Green Day get's into more positive subject matter, which is probably why I love Macy's Day Parade so much.
Cob
I agree with you 110%. "See the Light" was the only song that really stuck out to me and that I cottoned onto immediately on that album on the initial run-through. I think the ending line before the last chorus is perfect to end the album - "When the ever-after is in the hands of fate." The whole album is about our protagonists struggling and fighting the powers that be but in the end, such things are largely left to fate. On a personal level, the song as a whole gives me chills and relates to a lot of problems I've had in my life in a way that most of the songs on the album didn't. Hard to relate to them rebellious liberal youth aye?
HolyHandGrenade
Maybe I'll go toss some Molotov cocktails round the city and check back with the album and see how I feel No need. Simply wear scarfs, listen to Arcade Fire, and drink Pabst Blue Ribbon. THAT is rebellious counter-culture
Ana.
Listening to 21CBD all the way through now because reasons I was about to just do that. I have so much love for this record, so many great melodies and lyrics
Cob
HA. I always seem to listen to 21stCB all the way through whenever I discuss it on this forum.
Mar
It's amazing. I just wish they hadn't followed up AI with it, I feel like it's really underappreciated because it had the bad luck of being the album to come after AI. And I think 21CB is an album that takes at least a second listen to get. It doesn't sound like AI, but it's easy to mistake it for AI and think of it as a sound-alike if you don't pay attention to it. Unfortunately, I feel like a lot of people judged it prematurely or without even listening to it.
Z J
Now that I've thought about it, I think I started disliking the song once I started to notice how unnaturally high Billie's voice is in it. Idk, maybe it's just me I thought Billie did a surprisingly good job of matching some of those notes live

Agreed I think GD would be screwed no matter what they released if they had released just a regular cd that had no story there would be people who wouldnt like it i love 21st great album
The Forgotten
21st Century Breakdown IMO: pros: Great lyrics Good distribution of pumpass songs and ballads Great guitar Good music videos Great melodies Awesome artwork cons: Bad choices for singles The existence of See the light Weak bass Obvious attempt to recreate an American Idiot Occasionally over-high voice The "story" is really hazy 8.5/10 , fantastic album

Z J
Alright so IDK if this is going to make sense for an unpopular opinion but I'll try to phrase well. I think songs like 21 guns, Boulevard of Broken Dreams, Wake Me Up When September ends, and Good Riddance are underrated because they are overrated To expand: These songs are incredible lyrically and are just beautiful pieces, but they became the anthems of 12 year old girls everywhere and became over played on the radio, thus drawing the ire of many other fans. 21 guns especially doesn't get enough credit for being spectacular I believe (from non-12 year olds)
Mar
I always loved LOTAG. I know it's not their most poignant songs, but I really do enjoy it. It's catchy and just a joy for me to listen to.
musso_kn
21st Century Breakdown IMO: pros: Great lyrics Good distribution of pumpass songs and ballads Great guitar Good music videos Great melodies Awesome artwork cons: Bad choices for singles The existence of See the light Weak bass Obvious attempt to recreate an American Idiot Occasionally over-high voice The "story" is really hazy 8.5/10 , fantastic album I tend to agree, although there is a live version of Americab Eulogy and See the Light that I might put later when I'm not on my iPod that is guaranteed to make you change your mind about the latter. It worked for me, and I hated it once, too. Plus, I don't understand why people claim 21st Century Breakdown is an obvious attempt to recreate American Idiot. It's not. They were trying to TOP American Idiot. The only way to do that was to stick to the rock opera/concept album theme, but produce an album with big productions and a variety of sounds. 21st century Breakdown, in that sense, was not a shameless and lazy (but good) attempt to cash in on their previous success; it was the next logical step forward from American Idiot. I had left behind my obsession with Shakira, Avril Lavigne and the rest of modern, manufactured pop music very quickly. I liked 21 Guns, but I didn't find it the most exciting track on the record. I wanted something faster and heavier. My point is, not all preteen or young teenage girls are obsessed with radio friendly drivel. It's a stupid stereotype. Not that I think 21 Guns is drivel, but I suppose that's what you were suggesting. I quite like; it's a good piece of song writing in its own right, even if it was overplayed.
