musso_kn
Jesus Christ I want to respond but I don't what to type on my iPod. I will say this though: consider that X-Kid is Billie written from the perspective of the fallen friend, not writing from 3rd person (he clearly uses both throughout the song). "Here's goes nothing" is the mentality of the suicide victim, not of the mourner. The bridge of the song is though, and God is it powerful. I strongly disagree that it is as powerful as much of Billie's previous lyrical work. It's all a matter of opinion, of course, but even from the point of view of the deceased X Kid lacks, for me, that powerful punch. "Don't want to be an American Idiot" "I want to be the minority" "Do you know your enemy?" "Am I just paranoid? Am I just stoned?" "It's something unpredictable, but in the end it's right. I hope you had the time of your life." Look here. In a few lines, he manages to summarise a lot of ideas very cleverly. He does that throughout many of these songs and many of the band's lesser known tracks, too. One of his strengths as a song writer, and I've said this before, is that he captures the zeitgeist, hits the nail hard on the head, whatever the nail may be, very well. I don't feel like he does that in X Kid, or any trilogy song for that matter. Lyrically, they just kind of ramble on a bit, and then finish. Like I said though: just a personal opinion. deletethisaccount
I listened to X-Kid while watching the intro to Full House on mute and I thought it was melodically appropriate.

KyleTheManwhore
1) The majority of 1039/Smoothed Out Slappy Hour is terrible and poorly written, especially Rest and I Was There, the only two songs I really listen to on there are Green Day and At the Library. 2) One of My Lies is boring. 3) Chump is one of the worst Green Day songs of all time, it's so boring and repetitive, it's really just an album-filler. 4) Insomniac isn't great, most of the songs sound the same and have the same structure as one another. Oh, and I despise Geek Stink Breath. 5) Nimrod is there beat album, but Last Ride In is pointless. 6) Warning should never have been released, there are some good songs but altogether it's pretty poor. 7) Minority bores me. 8) Shenanigans is dreadful! 9) Extraordinary Girl makes me cringe and WMUWSE bores the living daylight out of me! 10) Most of 21st Century Breakdown is below average and I seems like they were just trying to make another American Idiot. 3) The trilogy is awesome, except Baby Eyes and Little Boy Named Train, I can't listen to those two songs! Peace.

musso_kn
Someone told me they didn't like Green Day because they were too preachy... does anyone hear feel the same way. Personally I love his rants. I feel the opposite actually. He speaks about about important issues passionately, but he does it without coming across as preachy, hypocritical, or taking the moral high ground. It's clear, as all the band members have said in the past, that the music comes before politics. It makes me wonder whether Green Day lost a significant number of older fans on the basis of being un-American and not just the whole sellout argument put forward by some punks. Eva
I have this relationship with so many songs on the trilogy (looking at you Troublemaker). I love Troublemaker! It's so catchy. "I wouldn't say I'm straight 'cause I'm bent out of shape." edit: i am so gay, god dammit. Woaaaahhhhhhh what about American Idiot? I, personally, don't believe American Idiot is necessarily more "deep" than their previous albums. I believe it had a darker tone and subject matter, which really stood out compared to their previous sound. I mean, some of their earlier stuff has been dark (i.e., Insomniac) but not quite the same as American Idiot was. I'd quickly like to point out that just 'cause a song is about politics or society, does not mean it's deep. If talking about how much you hate the government, society, and expectations means something's deep, then I'm deeper than Marianas Trench. 9) Extraordinary Girl makes me cringe and WMUWSE bores the living daylight out of me! I respect your opinions, but WMUWSE is a beautiful song.

Mar
One of My Lies is boring. OK, that I'll agree with. I always had this irrational indifference to the song. I think it used to be much more popular among fans when I started posting here and I never got the hype. Dirty Rotten Bastards is an attempt at old glories and one of the most overrated Green Day songs ever. I like the song well enough, but you aren't lying. It's "epic" for the sake of being epic. If we hear it live, great, OK, I'll be content/happy with it. But it's not something that I'm clamoring for, at the same time.

Cob
What does that mean exactly? The 'I'm bent out of shape' part Well it's a phrase that usually means you're agitated or upset, maybe even a little pissed about something. Here it's used as a tongue in check reference to parting, maybe even sexuality.
Z J
I'm pretty sick of this "lack of depth" thing. Green Day has never been this "deep" band, at least not until 21stCB, and even then it was only mildly successful ( since there are many points on that record where you can't tell what the fuck is going on). Is the Trilogy straightforward? Definitely, but not anymore straightforward than any previous release. Now that's an unpopular opinion. It's like, what's Geek Stink Breath about or Redundant? Such deep meanings, right? Or what about a song like Stray Heart, infidelity disguised in 60's pop. Or Nuclear Family, excitement and energy in a song about fucking over your family. That's not real or deep or human? That's empty? Or what about something like SWTRLF; lust is empty? Comparing lust to violence is empty? Time to start wearing black berets with a turtle neck and doing slam poetry then. I firmly disagree with this. The lyrics on Dookie and in general the pre-American Idiot label were underrated and some were most definitely deep. For example: J.A.R, Basket Case wasn't "straight forward", She, Coming Clean, Castaway, Armatage Shanks, Good Riddance, and almost all of American Idiot. How were they not "deep" on American Idiot?
