Unpopular Green Day Opinions

Despite the fact that Loss of Control's lyrics are kind of everywhere, I really love the alliteration and rhythmic qualities of the pre-chorus. Billie is singing about 1000 words a minute there but it has a slick rhythm to it, kind of like the verses to Babs Uvula Who. The chorus blows chunks though; everyone on this site bitches about fucking one line choruses but that's not the problem. The issue is that Loss of Control's chorus plateaus; it does all this intense build up and then it flatly lands in "we're all crazy" which ends up feeling like another bridge. Contrast that to Walk Away and 99 Revolutions, which have one line choruses with a lot of released passion and energy behind each word. Otherwise, to me Loss of Control is a terrific live song and its really fun to play on guitar. But to me it's probably the weakest song on the wholly excellent Trilogy.

I feel the very same way about Troublemaker. I love the melody in 'Wanna be a troublemaker' but after all the build-up the first times I listened to it I was expecting an awesome and energetic chorus, but NO. Anyway it would get better if the chorus has some more to it.

I actually like them a lot more when they're just screwing around, not as serious on stage.

And by not as serious you mean balls out drunk?

I agree and I disagree. The first time I heard Troublemaker I thought the chorus was boring, but then I heard the solo and the post solo bridge. That plus the verse riff makes it good to me. I also like the way the chorus suspends after those verses. Like this crazy dance and then it kind of slows down for a bit for intimacy, only to start the party once again.

I used to love Dookie - "classic" Green Day, easier on the ears than their other work, loads of replayability, etc... but I much prefer Insomniac, Nimrod, and Warning now.

Agree totally, these 3 albums have depth and sound that are lacking in the earlier albums as well as the post A.I. releases.

I will contest this, on the basis that I think 21st Century Breakdown dove deeper into many of the socio political ideas touched on in American Idiot lyrically and delivered a variety of sophisticated sounds musically. I would agree that everything up until 1994 is very simple and immature both musically and lyrically, although it is carried well by sheer passion and sincerity. I totally agree about the lack of depth in every way with regards to the trilogy.

Agreed as well. I honestly could listen to Nimrod, Insomniac, Dookie, and Warning on repeat all day. They have that certain quality. And I know what you're saying with the post American Idiot releases and how they don't have that same quality the previous albums had. I think that's what they tried to accomplish with the trilogy IMO. Making those catchy, somewhat shorter songs like what they did with Dookie, Insomniac, etc.

I don't know how unpopular this is, but I think Troublemaker is one of the trilogy's most underrated songs tbh. It's probably my favourite of all three CDs.

Yeah I get your point, but playing songs people may not know would encourage them to look back on the past records and listen, at least I did anyway. I didn't know the first two records existed until I saw a video of them performing at a German festival in 2000, they played Knowledge and I thought it was rad so I did some research and I really love those albums. (Still waiting for my copy of 39 to come in the mail...fuckin post :/ )

I saw the show in Melbourne and it was good, but the setlist was to obvious most of the way through.

Do you know what song he tried playing? Because the played The judges Daughter some where in America on the 21stCB tour and You can barely hear anyone singing along, and it was good quality as well, so I don't think they'd be afraid of playing songs that aren't well known

I am embarrassed to say this but Liam said it was scattered. A well known song I would have thought - but apparently not. So imagine if they played a huge setlist from the trilogy - the majority would walk away very disappointed the hits they knew weren't played. Other hand they are awesome songs - like you said they could go out and then get the trilogy to add to their collection. Anyways enjoy the concert when they come.

I'm sick of hearing brain stew live

I'm sick of hearing Brain Stew without Jaded as well. Move St. Jimmy somewhere else on the set at least. In fact, I would love to see them to a mash-up of those two as well as Angel Blue. That would be non-stop energy for a good 6-8 minutes

I don't know if this is an unpopular opinion but i really think this is one of their worst live performances, i really don't like it, don't know if it's because the cast from the musical is there (weird, cause i love the musical), but i think it's kind of ridiculous, and the attitude from the girls from the musical it's so weird hahaha i don't know, i really hate it, probably i would love it if the performance were just Green Day

I don't like it either, probably because Last of the American Girls is soooo boring live  it should've never been a single or played at anything like this.

I've hear that song live like two or three times and i really like it, but this, this was just awkward :P

Don't know if these are unpopular but I'll just throw em out there.

  • J.A.R is my favorite song from Green Day. The lyrics, bass, and clean vocal from BJA really are just awesome.
  • Restless Heart Syndrome is a good song in studio, but if they ever performed it live, I doubt BJA could hit those notes
  • BJA should do a solo acoustic album, and sing in his normal voice, not his green day one. (See video)
  • J.A.R. should be re-released as a single with their next album. (since it never was attached to an actual album)
  • UNO, DOS, TRE has decent songs but they were over-produced, the live versions are superior
  • They are a way under-rated instrumental band.
  • BJA should ditch the eye-liner, the look worked very well as a sort of reincarnation for AI, but it's time to move on

This so much. The riff is fucking fantastic and the solo shreds so hard. I love that song. Lyrics are a bit weird, but yeah, it truly is a great song.

I'll have you know that you're not alone and many people on GDC, such as myself, would kill to make this happen.

They've actually played it live. Only audio, but it sounds like he didn't have trouble singing it to me.
