X-Kid-X
So you attack Nirvana but not Green Day? Are you overlooking that the song Warning is just The Kinks Picture Book verbatim? Come on dont be a hypocrite That's the only thing I can without a doubt call a rip off. Haven't heard The Kinks' Picture Book verbatim.

Cob
Fuck Time is every Rock N' Roll song in the history of recorded music. The lines between what's ripped off and what isn't is so blurry nowadays, but there are a few songs out there that I can definitely call complete rip-offs. If they share the exact same melody and arrangement, then I'm comfortable calling a song a rip-off.

Rick Onishi
haha is this a joke? the trilogy is good, the songs are great, but the guitar sound is a bit boring, it would have been perfect if they chose to make the guitars sound like dookie or nimrod.. I'm talking about guitar sound, distortion, amps and stuff like that.

JackInABox86
The guitar sound on the trilogy is better IMO, it means that the bass has a lot more presence than it did in say AI or 21stCB.

I'm talking about guitar sound, distortion, amps and stuff like that. Honesty, I wish they would have gone the Nimrod route for the Trilogy and really worked hard to develop the sound and production of each song and album so that we could safely say that it's three distinct albums, 37 distinct songs. That's why I think the records are underproduced, if anything.
Clockwise
Honesty, I wish they would have gone the Nimrod route. Exactly, I don't think it should have been one set guitar sound, because a lot of the songs would have benefit from having a sound geared towards them specifically. But songwriting wise, I really do think the trilogy is A + and one of my favorite things the band has done.

Cob
Am I the only one who likes each album has their own sound? Absolutely not. A homogeneous sound for each album would be horrendous. The sound of each album characterize the songs soo well. Insomniac's darkness and negativity is only fueled by that urgent, loud, unabashed sound. Warning's reflective and thoughtful guitar pop wouldn't make sense with the dry Dookie tone. Experimenting with amplification and sound production may not sound like much but it's actually a super important part of musical progression. Having a unique sound every album just makes each one even more special.

Mar
I honestly wouldn't mind if the band just went ahead and did 1 massive 2 hour show where they played American Idiot for it's 10th Anniversary and then follow it with Dookie for it's 20th. Yeah, if they're gonna play the overplayed songs from those albums like they are now, fuck it, go whole hog and make it worth it!
St. onrep
Me too. I'm really on the fence with this whole trilogy. Nightlife has got great rap-lyrics, and sick bass, but I would never play it in front of my friends. Billie's lyrics in it suck however. And I wasn't really disappointed with the trilogy, just ... well...maybe. I'm not sure. I hate Nighlife but I also wasn't disappointed with the trilogy. But just because I had no expectations after I heard Oh Love for the first time.
Hermione
Lol have you heard how much Billie swears just when he's talking?! There's nothing forced about the swearing on the Trilogy. ChrisC1997
An unpopular opinion about Green Day...not the band but I fucking hate the GD fan base in so many aspects...he comes a list (Swearing shall follow) 1) Not many people realize that the guys are now in their 40's, they're aren't going to be singing songs about getting stoned or trying to relate some teenager who think they get nothing when they get everything at the click of a finger, learn to acknowledge age difference 2) In the Albums "American Idiot" and "21st Century Breakdown", Green Day became one of those bands that have one hit single on an album that everybody knows ie; "Boulevard of Broken Dreams" and '21 Guns" and they get shit loads of radio play (Not that I listen to the radio, they can go get fucked) and then the show sells out. Not to say the show selling out is bad thing...it's the bitchy fucks that come along with it, waiting to hear one song and then they fuck off. Hope it was worth the money, cunt. 3) Most fans that first heard Green Day from American Idiot or something in the future, don't bother to look back on the work they've done in the past. Some of the Bands Greatest songs are on Insomniac (IMO) and it shits me. I saw a comment on youtube on the video of the secret show Green Day played in Italy a couple days ago, and this little fuck didn't recognize "Burnout" and called it a new song. If you're going to call yourself a fan, listen to the discography first. 4) Every single little bitchy shit that thinks Billie Joe is the only one in Green Day worth paying attention to...pretty self explanatory this one, we all hate them. 5) No one, and I mean NO ONE in the GDC can take the opinion of someone against the band or think another is better than Green Day, No one respects opinions here, the fuck is the deal? I personally think Sum 41 is a better band, for my own personal reasons. I think Deryck is a better writer than Billie. If I was to say that on youtube, I would be getting my shit pushed in for it, and it may happen here on this forum as well 6) When an over rated song is brought up eg; "21 Guns" in a negative tone talking about how it's over rated, you get a load of whinge about it. I don't get it. 7) People keep bringing up the rage fest that happen at the iHeartRadio fest. Stop, move on. Fuck sake Now complaints about Green Day themselves 1) Mike is talking on stage anymore like he did before the "American Idiot era". He generally said funny things, he said like 2 in some videos I saw of the Irving Plaza show in 2012 2) The "99 Revolutions tour" is meant to be a tour for the Trilogy, granted not many people like it and I understand the 20th Anniversary of the release of "Dookie" and the 10th for "American Idiot" but come one, they're cutting off good songs from the trilogy and playing more songs from "American Idiot" in one set alone alone than new songs from the three albums! Bring back "Nuclear Family", "Let Yourself Go" and "Kill the DJ" and throw in stuff that people wouldn't expect like "Wow! That's Loud", "Loss of Control", "Angel Blue", "Ashley", "Lazy Bones", "Sex, Drugs and Violence" "Missing You", "Dirty Rotten Bastards" and "The Forgotten" (<---It's possible). Play some rarities like "Stuck With Me" and bring back "The Grouch" sick of hearing too many A.I songs, I love that album but, that tour happened nearly 10 years ago guys, move on. 3) They've gone back in to the studio to "Remix" songs off the new album, that being said; they put out 3 records that they mustn't of been happy with at the end, so they gone back to change them...Why not make it to your liking then put it out? 4) I live in Australia, so we have a longer wait for Green Day to come over here, but when they do, they set list is very, very, very ordinary. I could guess the full Australian set list for where i am and I'd like to say I'd be at least 80% right with my prediction. I saw videos in Europe, America, Russia that got super rare songs like "The Judges Daughter", "Armatage Shanks", "One of my Lies", "Stuck With Me"...the song that caught me by surprise when they played it in 2009 was "Coming Clean" but that's pretty much staple to the set now sooooooooo... I would KILL to see "Stuck With Me" and "Scattered" live. They need to branch out their set list, and for fuck sake BRING BACK SONGS ON "WARNING"!!!!!!!! Anyway, that's my rant about the GD fanbase and the band themselves, fell free to tell me how much of a piece of shit I am and how I'm not a real fan...because you'd only be proving my points about the GDC

GD complains 2) everybody agree about this it's not unpopular. but from the band point of view, they probably prefer when people in the crowd are going crazy and knows the lyrics than when few people are singing because it's a new song than anybody knows. actually when you're at the show you don't really give a fuck if it's new or not you're just going crazy. and i swear they'll keep that kind of setlist with the biggest hits until they die. not gonna change any soon. 3) maybe they were just having fun in the studio. Hermione
Anyway, that's my rant about the GD fanbase and the band themselves, fell free to tell me how much of a piece of shit I am and how I'm not a real fan...because you'd only be proving my points about the GDC Dude it's not like that here. The fact that we have a thread for "Unpopular Green Day Opinions" should tell you we don't mind negative/disagreeing opinions on the band on GDC. I do have some comments on some of your points though 2) Have you heard of Basket Case? During Dookie times there were loads of fans who only knew them from hearing their singles and seeing their videos played on MTV and from thinking they looked cool with their wacky blue hair and punky clothes. They were a "fad" for many people just as much then as now. That's just what happens when a band is successful and popular, they get lots of casual fans along with fans who get into them more and stick with them. 3) That simply isn't true, most people who heard the newer albums and really liked them and became fans of the band have gone back and heard the rest of their discography (I'm one of them ). Anyway, there's always going to be some people who just like a couple of a band's albums and aren't interested in hearing the rest. And that's fine, not everyone has to be a die hard fan of everything. But if you stick around GDC you'll see there's plenty of people who got into them with AI or 21st CB who love the old stuff just as much. And part 2 3) We don't know why they're remixing the songs. They might just've thought it'd be fun to try different things with them! It doesn't mean they're not happy with the originals. 4) That's the same everywhere they tour. They've never been a band who drastically changed up their setlists between shows or tours. Seems they prefer to mostly stick to playing the classics and keeping the same little fun on stage traditions that they have attached to certain songs. Might not be to everyone's taste but that's just how they like to do their shows. Not saying you're not entitled to post your opinions btw haha, just posting some of mine in response

Flyingdonutz
oh well again and again. now can you explain how the lyrics are so weak and it's not punk at all? It's not only the lyrical side of it. They aren't a whole lot worse than an album like Nimrod. The sound itself, while being somewhat original, IMO didn't go through the "Green Day" filter. The songs for the most part, all sound the same. Billie has gone on about how it's all got a story to it, and maybe it's a hidden story, but when you make an album like American Idiot then call this trilogy a story, its confusing. Because I don't see a story. I see 37 songs built for airtime. I see maybe 7 of 37 songs that I will listen to on a daily basis, as opposed to 6 of 14 for Dookie, 4 of 14 for Insomniac, 5 of 18 on Nimrod, 4 of 12 on Warning, and 13 of 13 for American Idiot. I could go on, but I think my points been made, and it's very simple really. Billie went on a talk show after releasing American Idiot, he said that rock bands today are pussies, and that they make a few solid songs and try to build an album around them. He went on to say that Green Day are a band that focuses on putting out good albums, not singles. They've, in MY opinion, anyways, completely contradicted those statements with Uno, Dos, and Tre. While all of their albums have outstanding songs, the supporting songs are all very, very listenable too. I find that in the trilogy, we have songs like Nuclear Family and Let Yourself go, surrounded by fairly weak songs like Troublemaker. We've got Stop Where the Red Lights Flash and Stray Heart surrounded by Lady Cobra and (oh god... why?) Nightlife. Tre, I will admit, is a very strong album. Brutal Love, X-Kid, Sex Drugs and Violence, Dirty Rotten Bastards, and 99 Revolutions, all great songs. And the sounds around them are nowhere as weak as they are on it's prequels. In summary, the albums have a very weak ratio of good to great songs, they have a few outstanding songs surrounded by weak songs that act as fillers. I'll continue to sit down and listen to the trilogy, I'm sure I will many times, but they can absolutely never match up to even an album like Insomniac or even Nimrod, nevermind do they come close to their best work in Dookie, or American Idiot, as Billie said before the albums were released. But it is just my opinion. /rantend An unpopular opinion about Green Day...not the band but I fucking hate the GD fan base in so many aspects...he comes a list (Swearing shall follow) 1) Not many people realize that the guys are now in their 40's, they're aren't going to be singing songs about getting stoned or trying to relate some teenager who think they get nothing when they get everything at the click of a finger, learn to acknowledge age difference 2) In the Albums "American Idiot" and "21st Century Breakdown", Green Day became one of those bands that have one hit single on an album that everybody knows ie; "Boulevard of Broken Dreams" and '21 Guns" and they get shit loads of radio play (Not that I listen to the radio, they can go get fucked) and then the show sells out. HolyHandGrenade
My hope is that Green Day are not playing their new songs because they want to forget about them and move on. Kind of like Warning. The only song I can recall them playing since the BiaB tour from that is Minority. That I've seen anyways. The problem isn't that Green Day wants to forget the trilogy - it comes down to the fans. I can assure you, they love every one of their albums, but for concerts, Billie knows that the majority of "fans" will not want to hear stuff they don't know the words to, or perhaps haven't even heard Basically, a large number of concert attendees have already moved on, even though the rest of us, including the band would like nothing more than to rock out to 10+ trilogy songs a night.
