Hermione
why? mikes not a singer.Okay, let's make a list. Governator.J.A.R.Sex Drugs & ViolenceHomecomingAmerican EulogyBasically ever backing vocal since the 1000 Hours EP He can sing.Mike also does backing singing on nearly all Green Day's songs live and in the studio! He certainly is a singer. But better as a backing one I think, not because he can't sing but because singing lead just doesn't suit him the way it does Billie (Billie being one of the best lead singers and frontmen of all time). Watch The Networks' "Disease Is Punishment" concert. Mike (or Van Gogh ) sings lead on half the songs, and although it's cool to see and he doesn't do a bad job by any means, he's nowhere near Billie in terms of having that natural frontman stage presence. I think Mike should trade mics with Billie and sing lead!!! Billie should play lead guitar but then I would miss his talkative banter... # badwishfulthinking Enjoy http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MSbVyggoDpE
TimmyChunks
Same! I love the lines in Ashley. I also love the lines that follow those you mentioned "Back when I loved you, but you're scaring me to death." Just the way he sings the lines is really interesting and dark. I didn't like Dos very much when I first heard it. And while as a whole it may not be my favorite album of the three, it contains the highest number of "favorite songs" from any of the three trilogy albums. Lazy Bones, Ashley, Stray Heart, Amy, Wow That's Loud, Nightlife (don't shoot me, I like it!) - all phenomenal songs. I think my problem with Dos is that some of the other songs seem like filler. Makeout Party is meh. Wild One is meh. Lady Cobra I actually like sound-wise, but it has the creepiest fucking lyrics. Possibly an unpopular opinion: Fuck Time should've never been put on a Green Day album. Ever. Its fine as a FHT song, but I absolutely hate that it's on a Green Day album. Ugh. I love this post! Ashley is an absolute gem. The lyrics are awesome, as you point out, and Mike's bass fill at the end of the last verse just makes me shudder- I think I have a hard time processing how incredibly awesome it is. I also love Baby Eyes- the verse melody is fantastic, the lyrics are also top-notch (I am the cherub in the Arab Spring, I am the bullet in your magazine"), and I love the Misfits-type riff after the chorus. Schlappy
Okay, let's make a list. Governator. J.A.R. Sex Drugs & Violence Homecoming American Eulogy Basically ever backing vocal since the 1000 Hours EP He can sing. i never said he couldnt sing, hes just not a singer. he sings well enough for those parts but shes talking about taking over for billie Mike also does backing singing on nearly all Green Day's songs live and in the studio! Mike can sing, but billie can sing much better so wanting him to take over for billie doesnt make sense to me. All this not even considering stage presence. Billie's the lead singer, mikes the bass player, thats their jobs and they do them damn well... why mess with the formula?

Compare his harmonies on She with his singing on Governator. He has a better natural range than Billie. And what's the harm with messing with the formula? It can't be any worse than Nightlife. At this stage in their careers, messing with the formula is exactly what Green Day should be doing.

Hermione
He does have a better range than Billie, he can sing much higher. I don't think that has any bearing on how good a lead singer he'd be though, just means he can hit the high harmony notes well when he's singing backing. JOE THE X-KID
Green Day is no longer for punks, but rather is targeted at stupid scene kids who do not understand what "punk " really is, at an attempt to stay relevant. They are only APPRECIATED, at least, by the people who are actually open and tasteful when it comes to music selection. JUST THROWING THAT OUT THERE!!!! i remember i was at an airport last year or something and there was two scene kid girls, they were like laughing at me because i had a Kurt Cobain shirt on. it just pissed me off because you could tell the only songs they knew were from 21st Century Breakdown. little did they know that i was a huge Green Day fan... Guest
Yet people hate on Nightlife lol Nightlife, Kill the DJ, The Forgotten, and Brutal Love all have serious flaws, but I put that down more to the rushed nature of the Trilogy. Given time I think a lot of those weaknesses would have been worked out of those tracks. Green Day have proved they can do different stuff, they just need to work a bit harder at it. There's a big difference between slapping down a bunch of angry lyrics and a 4 chord riff, and working on a song completely outside your comfort zone. Jon Benjamin
I'd like to hear green day play a metalcore song. From Take Back, Letterbomb, and Hitchin A Ride, we know Billie can scream. Green Day breakdowns.
Cob
I would call Oh Love a "power ballad" ....maybe Maybe, but a power ballad would have greater dynamics and more instrumentation, like 21 Guns, which continuously switches from huge, distorted choruses to extremely clean and melodic verses with strings and piano behind it. Ew ew ew, god no. Metalcore is up there with the worst genres of music for me. And screaming "SHITE" in a harsh tone of voice doesn't suddenly make you a screamer. It can take a lot of practice, and a lot of people simply can't do it. Besides, it'd likely be the most cringey thing Green Day have ever done. i agree with nightlife and the forgotten, but what's wrong with brutal love and kill the dj? Brutal Love is very good, but I would have been impressed if the hadn't stolen the melody line. It takes away from it a lot for me. Kill The DJ is excellent musically, but the chorus is just damn stupid. Needlessly vulgar, and not in the least bit witty or clever. It ruins what would otherwise be a favourite from the trilogy for me.
Guest
Please tell this to all the screamo bands out there. Thank you. Knew there was a reason I liked you 99% of metalcore is guys trying to scream over a load of guitar wankery and double-pedal. Somehow they got the impression that this was good music. I'm probably one of the biggest, if not THE biggest, "punk elitists" on this forum, but I don't think Green Day has called any of their music punk in a very long time so this doesn't seem....relevant? And I don't believe their intended audience is scene kids. Do they sound like Blood on the Dance Floor to you?I'd easily argue that every stereotypical "punk" out there owns at least 1 Green Day record. I'm going to make a general statement and say that every new age punk was probably introduced to the idea of punk because of Green Day or a band that was heavily inspired by Green Day/the 1990s punk revolution (i.e., Blink-182, Sum 41, The Offspring, etc.)
